The Balboa Park Hotel garners praise for its spotless and snug atmosphere, with many guests appreciating the in-room amenities like large TVs and mini kitchens. Its prime location is a hit, being just a stone's throw from Balboa Park and downtown attractions. While some travelers note the rooms are on the compact side with occasional noise, the overall cleanliness and friendly service tend to compensate for these drawbacks. Moreover, the hotel's value is recognized through its affordable pricing and convenient features, despite the extra cost for parking.

It was our first time in San Diego, I had been traveling overland with my 4 year old daughter in a rental RV through Arizona for a while, and then we took the bus after returning the RV near San Jose. Vincent, Brian, & Leti greeted us with a warm and friendly attitude. Even though the days were rainy, they were proud of their hotel's location, amenities, and maintained a sunny atmosphere inside ;-) They recommended places to visit (Balboa Park is super close, Sunset Cliffs, Old Town with easy access by train, bus and Uber), restaurants to eat, and lent us an umbrella when we needed it. They gave us bottles of water and, one rainy night, even a bag of microwave popcorn and apple juice for us to enjoy a movie in the room: excellent service! The room was also clean with a colorful wall of surfboards, included silverware, cups, bowls and plates. A large flat screen TV with Netflix for us and a renovated, albeit small, bathroom with enough space to put our toiletries and wash our faces. You can tell they have renovated things for the better. We once clogged the toilet with paper and they helped us immediately! 🫣The room size and bed were just what we needed. Enjoyed hot, relaxing showers as it was a bit chilly outside. Leti saved us by finding an important item that I lost because my daughter was playing with it at the front desk and since I didn't notice it, it was thrown away. Two days later when I noticed I didn't have it - and I required it to continue my trip! - I asked her and she made an extra effort to get it out just in time, so she got it back for me! Whew. Wow, I felt like I had an angel watching over me.

I checked into the hotel Occidental on November 25th the weekend after thanksgiving . I came here because I had gotten a job in SD and needed to be in SD on short notice . I didn’t yet have an apartment and needed a place to stay during the in between stage of me finding my own place . The room was clean and the aesthetic of the hotel was very nice, I believe it had just been renovated prior to me coming . It’s located in a very central area you will be near to most attractions such as balboa park, gaslamp, north park and many others . I highly recommend this hotel it’s very affordable and Stephanie who works for hotel Occidental at the front desk was very very accommodating and such a pleasure to get to know during my time at the hotel Occidental .

Balboa Park Hotel (Occidental) has been one of the best stays I have had in a while. This is a boutique hotel experience, built in a former Sequoia Club residence north of San Diego.

They have cheerful front desk folks, who allowed me access to my room a tad early to refreshen up before heading out. Balboa Park and a really nice coffee shop (Mostra) are just two blocks away, so you have a wide choice of venues to check out and eating establishments to try.

This place is for the self sufficient folks who don't need a morning breakfast buffet, and can key in at night from being out and about. Lot's of European folks stay here, which just tells you its a great deal.

For the convenience to nightlife etc., the location and price are good. It has been superficially renovated and looks nice except for some details that I’ll get to. I do like the kitchen area that includes a small refrigerator with a freezer compartment and coffee maker,

There is convenient parking, but it’s expensive, and if you want to walk to any touristy area, be prepared to walk past homeless encampments.

I had to call one of the numbers posted on the door to be let in, and the guy who opened the door looked like he lived in one of the homeless encampments I mentioned. He then had to go find the front desk guy. Luckily I made it to my room to freshen up and I was able to get to both dinner and dessert by 10 pm, but it shouldn’t be so stressful when you arrive at 7:45. There is a restaurant I really like in San Diego that closes at 9, so I didn’t want to go there at the last minute before closing time.

When I sat on the end of the bed the mattress fell through the thin metal frame. Then I noticed the bed makes a crinkly sound when you move on it. The source of this sound is a plastic wrapping that surrounds the mattress like you’d get for a kid who wets the bed. Also, I noticed a small roach. Maybe this would be less of a problem if the corners of the room were better cleaned and sealed.

Otherwise, the only problem I had was the vent in the bathroom. You can’t turn the light on without feeling a strong fan. This might be great for bathroom odor, but it’s not great for being wet from the shower. You might think it’s always warm in San Diego, but being wet with that fan on you when it’s in the 50s outside (this is not a unusually low temperature at night during autumn) isn’t ideal.

This hotel is terrible, room are very tiny, pretty much a bed and a restroom, wouldn't recommend for cluasterphobic people. The TV doesnt even work, poor imternet connections. Made multiple complaints and all the reception was able to do was give us an email address, alex.sanchezoccidental440@gmail.com. No results what so ever, poor receptionist. The AirComditioner is centrally controlled, rooms were uncomfortably warm, cieling fan is available but doesnt really help much. Parking is terrible, no ground parking, its all self serve on the street, across the street, two block down the street and what not. Terrible experience.

It is an incredible hotel with wonderful people willing to provide excellent service! I would definitely choose it again! The rooms are very comfortable, they offer you a very delicious coffee for breakfast in each room! All the receptionists are very nice and willing to help at any time, and the location of the hotel is undoubtedly one of the best in the city!

Very clean and recently refurbished hotel, it is nice to step inside. Very helpful and kind staff. Solo room was clean and well-equipped. Feedback: one more lamp would be useful, as one corner of the room cannot be lit well enough.

Stephanie and the friendly staff at Hotel Occidental made my stay wonderful! The room was exceptionally clean and so cozy, complete with a TV, microwave, mini fridge and dishes. There are some lovely coffee shops within walking distance and Balboa Park is accessible by ride share in just a few minutes. As a female traveling alone, I felt very safe knowing that the building remains locked at all hours, with each guest receiving a door code upon arrival. I would absolutely recommend Hotel Occidental for your next stay!

Edgar at the front desk was very accommodating and helpful.

Would definitely stay here again!

Early in I found.out the fridge wasn’t working and they swiftly moved me to another room without any hassle.

It is a great location close to balboa park and nearby Sandiago Zoo, one of the best zoos in the world!
