The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa earns accolades for its cleanliness and idyllic location near the beach and local attractions, which many guests appreciate. While the hotel's amenities, including beach access and options for families, receive praise, some travelers criticize the maintenance of certain features. Despite the professionalism of the staff, issues with housekeeping service have been noted. Opinions on the rooms vary, with some finding them cozy and others suggesting they need updates. The value proposition is contentious, as high prices and extra fees have left several guests feeling dissatisfied.

This expertly run resort is absolutely worth a trip, or in our case, a triannual family visit. It is THE best kept secret. Everything about The Catamaran Resort is next to perfection. From their exceptional bay front views, the luxurious pool, remarkable staff, and delectable Oceana Coastal Kitchen Restaurant. I would suggest the seabass sandwich followed later by an espresso martini. Absolutely superb!

Did I mention, location, location, location!? There is nowhere else to experience the bay front views of well-known Mission Bay in such indulgent, yet charming Polynesian style. This resort offers accommodations for families, seniors, and even business people, yet is intimate enough for a romantic getaway. Soak up the sun while yacht watching, take out your paddle and surf boards, or grab a drink and get to know Cornell and Bianchi, The Catamarans local parrots.

Having great leadership is critical for a successful resort. You see, great leaders don't just inspire their teams to work harder and achieve more, they also create a positive work culture that fosters growth and happiness. The Catamaran Resort exemplifies this theory starting with HITOMI KATO, the Assistant Front Office Manager. Hitomi and her staff not only met, but exceeded our expectations. She made my family feel as if we were long time friends. Her friendly demeanor and thoughtful countenance set a next level example for quality customer service. We were treated to elite hospitality during our stay at the Catamaran Resort.

Everything you could ever need or want is found at this exceedingly impressive resort. I hope my review helps your decision.

We’ve stayed at the Catamaran a few times before and just returned from weeklong stay. The hotel does a great job with safety measures making us feel very comfortable. The Catamaran is our favorite hotel in the Mission/Pacific Beach area due to proximity to the bay and the ocean. We had two rooms overlooking the bay in the tower. As many reviews state, the resort is in need of some updating but our rooms were perfectly maintained and exactly as pictured on the website. The kitchen appliances are definitely vintage but were in working order allowing us to have a few meals on the balcony. Pictures of the kitchen are below. The handicap accessible room includes a very spacious fully ADA compliant bathroom as well as a roll-under sink in the kitchen. At check-in we were told there would be no daily housekeeping which we understood and when we needed fresh towels or supplies, we would simply call housekeeping. Whenever we called, our supplies were delivered within an hour or two. The kitchen is not stocked but if you need any dishes, utensils or pans, those items are brought to you. We rented water sport equipment right outside the hotel on the bay which is very convenient. We dined at Oceana a couple of times and found it pricey but very good. The smoothies at the coffee bar are excellent. One of the best things about the resort is the area with umbrellas and chairs on the bay. I have to give a shout out to Brenda who helped us arrange our umbrella and chairs every day. The resort does not charge for using these items which is a plus. The final thing to note is that I left a valuable piece of jewelry in the room and didn’t realize it until I was home and unpacking. Sara at the front desk contacted housekeeping and discovered that they had found my item. I was so relieved. I think it speaks volumes that the staff at the Catamaran is this trustworthy and was able to return my earrings. Thank you for a wonderful week!

There are no words that are adequate to describe our 6 night stay this month. We were in the 600 building, 2nd floor, absolutely fabulous room and view and furnished with beautiful ornate solid wood furniture.

From the minute we arrived until we left, my wife calls it "magical." And I agree. The food at Oceana is great, although quite pricey, but the experience of eating outside on the waterfront was worth it. Heaters take off any chill there might be in the morning or evening. The pool was immaculate and large enough to actually swim, not just get wet like so many outdoor hotel pools I've seen.

The sand is raked every morning, chairs and umbrellas are set up each morning. The grounds are unlike anything I've ever seen. Lush vegetation, ponds for koi and ducks and turtles, an exotic bird area and show.

Great walking/biking path around the bay and only a block away from the ocean.

We are eager to return. We will treasure the memories of this trip for years to come.

The Catamaran is in a beautiful location where you can walk to the bay or ocean side of Mission Bay in well under 5 minutes. The grounds are also very nice, with a lot of lush trees, ducks, and koi around. Unfortunately, it is really outdated and the actual room was an unpleasant experience.

The WiFi signal was so weak that we couldn't say connected reliably and it was horribly slow when we did get a connection. There is a $30 mandatory "resort fee" that includes the WiFi, which only made that more irritating. We could also hear the folks in the next room way too well. It didn't seem like they were being especially loud, but I could follow their conversation if I paid attention. Finally, the whole room, including the bathroom, was covered in dingy old wallpaper with stains, old patches, etc.

We loved this hotel (location is beautiful) until tonight when we were aggressively charged 3 times by an unleashed large dog that had crapped 3 times in front of our room. When we yelled at the dog after the third attempted attack, security (that we had called for) yelled at us to go back to our room and acted more protective of the dog owner than of we the guests who felt threatened. Absolutely handled it the worst way possible. What a shame, great location. Rooms are dated and not super clean, shower water pressure trickles, toilet paper is like sandpaper, food is overpriced and average, drinks are outrageously expensive ($15 for a Mai Tai), and $300/night off season to be attacked by the owner's dog. Due to the beauty of the property we could handle all of the other negatives, but will not tolerate being attacked and then treated like we did something wrong and have our safety disregarded by owner and staff.

We stayed in the tower w a Pacific view and loved the nights cool breezes and daytime views. The restroom is small but other than that, you’d not realize it is an older property. The room itself was a very nice size and very comfortable. Grounds keepers were out early every morning and nothing was out of place. The cockatoos and parrots “hello” and “goodbye” greetings were a special bit of fun too. We had breakfast each morning beach side and it was quite tasty. Traditional and creative options in a beautiful setting. Every staff person we encountered the week we were there was always pleasant, our stay was so pleasant! The main reason for selecting Catamarans was its location to the beach plus it’s central location between La Joya and the Balboa Park areas. Uber was easy and off we went each day and back in the evening to watch the sunset on Pacific Beach. Loved it!!!

The good....the service has been great and the staff very helpful. The king size room is adequate in size and it was nice to have a balcony which has an ocean view. It is a very walkable area to shopping, ocean, restaurants including a Ralphs grocery store. The Tower rooms seemed quiet. The ducks, birds and Koi fish around the property were nice. We enjoyed being able to walk out onto the Bay side and walk along the walking path there. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool and the Hawaiian music was enjoyable on the Sunday.

The bad..the pot smell was awful. We stayed on level 7 in the Tower and right off the elevator the smell of pot started and went almost the whole hallway to our room. It wasn’t too bad once you got into the room. I understand this isn’t necessarily the hotels fault but just something to be aware of.
I understand that we are in Covid times but there isn’t any housekeeping at all. We stayed for 5 days and had to request everything we needed from new coffee cups, creamer packets and towels. It would have been nice to have a microwave in the room along with the fridge and coffee maker.
Although the area is very walkable I’m not sure that I would have walked it after dark to the restaurants. It definitely feels older and I’m not sure that the price necessarily reflects the value. The room heater was very loud and unfortunately whilst we were here it was quite chilly and so we needed it to be on.
We don’t think we would recommend it to our friends which is unfortunate as we wanted to feel like we were in a luxury resort for a get away but it definitely didn’t have that luxury feel that we felt the price conveyed.

A beautiful property that is a jewel in San Diego needs a little polish so it can really shine. It is difficult to criticize hotels during this time given the extraordinary constraints they face. Still, it must be noted, that a higher-end establishment should make regular capital expenditures to upgrade its rooms and facilities. The mattresses were hard and made for a difficult sleep, the carpet seemed a bit dirty and worn, the A/C needed repair, and the decor seemed appropriate for the early nineties. However, the grounds and wildlife on property clearly enjoy a high degree of care. A walk around the grounds will evoke feelings that one is transported to a tropical oasis. We took plenty of pictures. The pool was clean, refreshing, and crystal clear. The poolside grill's offerings were flavorful and filling. Unfortunately, the spa and hot tub were closed in response to global health concerns. The food served at Oceania was tasty, although some items have a high price to value ratio. The seared scallops were a big hit. We loved it. I was disappointed that the restaurant did not offer clam chowder (a staple at most ocean side eateries of this type). Throughout the resort, I believe staff worked hard to make guests feel welcome and at ease. For example, complimentary beverages were offered to guest enjoying the beach side lounge chairs. That was an unexpected treat. It was overall an enjoyable stay.

The location of this hotel is fabulous. It's right on the bay and a block walk from the ocean front. We had a bayside room and it was worth the extra $$ on the room cost. The setting is lovely, with plants, greenery, flowers, ducks, water features, koi ponds, and birds on display. The room we had, however, very much needed renovation. The carpeting was worn, the bathroom tiles were cracked, the desk table in the room itself was heavily scratched. We stayed in the latter part of May, 2021, when the CDC had loosened Covid guidelines. It was incredibly annoying and disappointing that we were not able to have daily housekeeping services. I stay in a hotel, rather than a rental, for the services that the hotel provides. This hotel should have been offering housekeeping on request. We were charged a daily resort fee of $30 and I have no idea what that was all about; no idea what the "services" were supposed to be. The morning hostess in the hotel's one restaurant
was ever so friendly and remembered us after one morning. I wanted to get change at the front desk, for a $20 bill, one morning and the only person behind the front desk told me that she was too new to be able to provide that change. There was no valet parking; we didn't have a car, so we didn't care, but that is another piece of Covid updating that the hotel needs to undertake. I'm not sorry we stayed there, as the location is so good and the grounds were lovely, but I felt it was pretty expensive in light of what we didn't get.

My wife and I just stayed 5 nights for our anniversary. We booked the bay and ocean view room on the 10th floor of the tour. We selected this room due to it having a kitchen and views.

The check in was very easy. We arrived in the morning and were allowed to check in early. This was certainly appreciated. The grounds are really nice, as is the lobby, grassy area by the beach, the immediate beach area, and restaurant. The views from the room are fantastic. The room however was in need of serious update. The bathroom being the biggest eye sore for a pricy room. The tub, shower, and tile were very aged, heavily stained, and generally worn out. The kitchenette was convenient, however also very dated. Due to Covid, everything in the kitchenette has been removed. If you wanted plates, cups, silverware, etc, you had to request it from housekeeping. You also do not receive daily maid service. The views from the room helped us look past this, and it’s vacation after all.

The rub came at checkout. A resort fee was charged per night, which is not out of the norm, however most of what the fee lists as covered amenities were closed due to Covid issues. Upon inquiry at the front desk about reducing this fee, the agent read a statement to me from her computer. I explained that the spa, hot tub, and gym were primary draws to the resort, but that they are closed. In addition maid service was also not present. The agent apologized but said there was nothing she could do. In reviewing our final bill, there was over $300 of charges that were incorrect.

Over all, I would likely return to this resort. They were observing safety precautions, the staff was pleasant, and the location is perfect for waking to everything. The rooms need a serious update, and the resort fee policy should be looked at.
