Besides the location, this hotel could use a renovation of its rooms. The 1990's called and said they wanted their curtains back! The carpet was well worn. Furniture was worn and evidence of spilled liquids. The TV was small by today's standards. It was difficult to find a TV channel since there was no guide in the room. I appreciated that the AC unit was very quiet which made it possible to sleep without being woken up every time it switched on as happens in most hotels.

Stayed for a business trip.

The Good:

The location and North bound I-5 freeway access was great for getting to attractions like Seaworld and Legoland.

On site parking was $35.00 a night and while limited we did not have problems finding parking.

Cookies when you check in. Who doesn't like a chocolate chip cookie?

The not so good things:
The design of the bed frame and the dark color make it so you hit your shin on the corner as you are moving around the room (see attached photo). It looks modern and nice but both my wife and I have bruises on our legs.

The electrical outlets need to be replaced as they will not hold cord/rechargers.

Went to use the shower and the handle fell out in my hand. You could still use the shower/bath but you had to make sure you turned it just right or it would fall off on you.

Like many urban hotels you need to use your room key to access the elevator. The key card readers were slow and did not always work so you ended up going to other floors while you messed with the key card reader. Encountered a number of frustrated people in the elevator trying to get the key card reader to work.

In room wireless was "dial up" slow. This was stated by many of the others at my meeting so I think it was wide spread throughout the hotel and not just due to my floor or location on the floor.

More of a note than an issue or concern: The parking garage ramps are narrow and there isn't the room for a wide turn to access the ramp. If you have a larger car or truck getting into and out of the garage may be an issue.

I always considered the Double Tree brand to be an upscale property, but this one needs some polish and upgrading.

The room was not so clean when I arrived at the first day. There was a used coffee bag left in the coffee maker. The ventilation fan wasn’t working and entire room got smokey after we got shower so we had to open the window very often. The shower head was not fixed and there was a hall on the wall. We have 4 family members including two kids but we found only two bath towels. We also requested upgrade because my wife had her birthday during our stay but it was rejected due to the lack of vacancy according to the concierge. I understood the situation, but for us, this was the first time the upgrade request was refused in any of other hilton hotels we’d ever stayed even though we made a call beforehand. The second day, when we came back to the room, the room was not cleaned. So we had to ask concierge to make sure clean up our room every morning in the rest of our stay. After that, the room looked very clean and we’re satisfied with the clean up service especially for the last day. I’m not sure who did, but she or he did great. We also asked if the breakfast is complementary or not at the front desk, and the concierges said “of course it is”. But when I went to the breakfast hall on the 1st floor next day, the waiter said that we had to pay for the breakfast and for even the cup of coffee, we had to pay 5 dollars!! Additionally, the waiter looked a bit rude and we felt uncomfortable.

First and foremost, kudos to Matthew the Front Desk supervisor! They made the stay amazing!!! The room was clean and ready upon my checking in, Ivan was the one who checked me in and was cheerful and very polite. I told him I didn't need the amenity spiel and he still made sure I got my cookies and water. I was just there for one night but I can't wait to return. I want to make sure I get to stay the entire time there for the next Comic Con. What can Doubletree do better next time...Nothing! It was amazing if I could give 10 stars I would. To the GM of this property, you should be proud of the Team you currently have and I can't wait to see you all again next year!!

Woof. I’m a loyal Hilton customer but this experience had me wondering if it’s time to cash out and swap to Marriott. I want to be really upfront in this review because I spent my whole trip to San Diego frustrated with this hotel and how much it cost to have such a mediocre stay.

There are so many operational issues with this hotel. It’s 20+ floors, but only two working elevators for the whole building—and I don’t just mean for guests. The two usable elevators were constantly being used by staff as well (engineers, housekeeping, etc). We never waited less than 4 minutes for an elevator, and it was typically closer to 5 or more. If you have anywhere to be, stay on a floor low enough to walk from (or better yet, stay somewhere else). Our room was dirty in some very obvious and pretty gross ways (sticky nightstand, strangers’ hair on the bathroom floor, dirty mirrors). We had to call down twice for extra pillows because there were no extra blankets or pillows in the room. There’s also no luggage rack, something even the cheapest motels provide. Note that check in was also a mess: at 4 pm on a Thursday, during peak check in time, there was only one employee in the lobby, responsible for check in as well as answering the phone. This made for a very long line.

And the parking! I read reviews where people complained about the garage parking and I wrote it off as people just driving massive trucks and SUVs around and being upset that city parking garages aren’t built for that. Well, this garage doesn’t appear to be built for any type of four-wheeled vehicle. We were in a little Mazda and barely made it in and out of the garage each time. I can’t understand how this garage was ever approved to be built.

Hopefully not a concern in the long term, but we were also surprised by the zero enforcement of Hilton COVID protocols. Even staff were unmasked throughout the hotel, riding in the elevators with us. The room was clearly not well cleaned either.

And to top it all off, the cookies were cold. Come on, Doubletree.

Overall, the location is nice if you aren’t on the highway side of the building, but this place isn’t worth half what is being charged. Do yourself a favor and pick any of the many other hotels in the area.

Hello Kelly Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express my sincerest apologies. We had some issue with our elevators after we reopened and unfortunate we weren't able to get the assistance form the elevator company due to them being short staffed as well. and the back log from the state to get the permit. I'm happy to report that all of our elevators are working and have been approved by the state as well as the elevator company. the Parking here at the DTSD is very narrow like most hotels in the area. We do have it listed on our website that parking is narrow and i wish we can have it in big bold letters, to inform the guests. We do our best to asset with parking when it is addressed to us. All our employees are to endure to wearing masks for their protection as well as our guests and are consoled if we do see this this. I'm sorry you felt uncomfortable, but i assure you we did follow all state mandated requirements We would love to have you back so that we can share a better experience with you

Spent two nights with the family for the weekend in San Diego. And noticed the hotel needs to work harder to become better, not just hardware, but housekeeping etc still got a lot of improvements.
During our stay, noticed the tissue box wasn't checked and refilled, coffee machine was missing stirrers and sugar packets.
The AC was loud and became our background white noise. And one of the USB charging port doesn't work properly.
For a hotel located downtown, parking is $35 daily, with 6-7 EV charging location available as a first come first served basis. And not reserved for EV, and may be blocked by any vehicles who comes first. Given there seemed a limited parking available overall.

I don't know how this facility is considered a Hilton property. There was no manager on site to control the very rowdy, intoxicated crowd. One elevator was disabled, the other stopped on every floor. The first room we were given had not been cleaned yet (we checked in at 8pm - beds weren't made/towels on floor); the second room we moved to had a leaking toilet with water on the bathroom floor; the third room they transferred us to (by 11pm that night) the door lock didn't work. We stayed in that one anyway, as we were too exhausted by then to move again and take our chances on something else wrong. Another family member with us also had to move twice because of noise and filthy floors in her room. Never have we been to such a crazy unpleasant Hilton, or even hotel in general. (The poor maintenance man was very nice and friendly and helpful, though. He knew it was quite a bad scene and appologeticallly did what he could to help).

This hotel used to be one of my favorites because of its location but I don’t think I’ll ever stay here again. If you are looking for good customer service DO NOT stay here. We had a few problems:
1) extremely poor customer service (specify the manager Lilian)
2) freeway noise on one side of the hotel
3) no WiFi on one side of the hotel
3) none smoking room reeked of smoke smell. I have allergies to cigarette smell an as soon as I walked in my throat started closing…
4) room falling apart
5) they gave us a room with no balcony (probably the only one in the hotel that didn’t have one.)

We arrived at 12:00 noon and were checked into a room on the freeway side of the hotel. You can hear the freeway noise very loudly with the windows closed. We asked to be moved to the other side so we are not on the freeway side. The manager (Lilian) told us they can’t move us because of the time we checked in. They maybe able to move us later. I asked why? Is the hotel booked? Because the parking lot is empty and the hotel doesn’t seem to be full. They said no, because other guests may arrive later. So we are being punished because we got there early. Later that night we noticed our WiFi is not working, which the technician finally admitted, that the even # rooms, that side of the hotel the WiFi doesn’t work. We asked if we can be moved to a room that has WiFi, as we were checking the room with the technician, the front desk decided to change our room. We didn’t want to move there as it smelled like cigarette smoke and it didn’t have a balcony. Then the manager Lilian said if we don’t change the rooms they’ll charge us for 2 rooms because on the system they have already changed our room. The technician was trying to explain to the manager that we hadn’t asked to be moved, we wanted to check the room first but the manager Lilian didn’t care and forced us to move and if not she was going to charge us for two rooms.
Long story short DO NOT waste your money to stay here. There are plenty of better options around here.

Hello AmyA175 Thank you for your feedback. We understand guests at times would like to check in early. which we try to accommodate when we can. in this situation it looks like we were able to give you an early check in but not to the desired room you would have liked. when one came available we did move you to a room with a balcony...but at that time you wanted both rooms and Lillian expressed she will need to charge you for the second room. The technician was trying to get you logged in to the wifi, sometimes people need to clear their settings, cookies or even re-set their settings for the firewalls and I'm happy our team member was able to assist you with that. Our internet works on both sides of the hotel, and we were able to get you into a balcony room per your request. But we are not able to give you two rooms for the price of one. We also need to put your original room out of order due to someone that smoked in the room that should have not. WE ARE a non smoking hotel and take that seriously with your allergies I'm sure you apricated that Lillian did everything she could to get you a room with a balcony as soon as she did. If you have any other questions or feedback please contact me directly.

Overall impressions: needs work in areas of cleanliness, repairs, and technology function.

Staff is courteous and helpful.

CONS

First room, which we chose via online check-in, slider to balcony would not close.

After having to switch rooms, the keyless entry function could not be transferred to my husband for the new room. Spoke with front desk staff, who tried to fix it, but no luck.

Elevator would not accept keyless function. Had to use keycards which required several tries and could only choose one floor at a time (guests had to run a keycard each time to choose different floors).

Nobody knew what a luggage stand is.

Hairs throughout the bathroom walls and ceiling, even on the artwork on the wall in bathroom.

No cleaning after first night (due to new state law), but we were not informed of that.

We requested just a couple of fresh bath towels, took forever (waiting to shower after full day out), they finally came around 9:30 p.m.).

Zero information in the room. No brochures with info. on hotel or surrounding amenities, not even a phone guide with numbers to call for different services. Nothing.

We came back to our room after a long day out and found our room door open, not just unlatched, but open a full inch plus. Nothing was taken, but this is unacceptable.

Website says shuttle service from airport was not running, had to arrange our own, expensive transportation to hotel.

During our stay, we saw hotel shuttles out front so asked about them. Turns out they were running after all, which would’ve been good to know upon arrival at the airport.

PROS
Desk staff was very polite and helpful.

Biggest saving grace was Anthony, our server in the hotel restaurant for breakfasts. Anthony was very friendly, attentive, and cheered up the morning.

Shuttle driver to airport was very friendly.

Great locale close to Little Italy. Had a small view of harbor and Little Italy from Balcony. Decor is tasteful Little Napoli with lots of marble. But....I was unable to use their parking garage due to not having a teeny car. Only found this out upon check in. Caused a huge inconvenience/hassle for me and I would not have booked if this had been disclosed ( they didn't even have the daily charge correct on site) There was no luggage fold out rack in room either, I have actually never stayed anywhere that did not have this basic item, suitcase went on floor as I never got the promised rack delivered after several 20 min. hold to front desk then waiting in room. Never had ice in machine my entire stay. More calls to desk and never remedied, Did not get housekeeping and was told after the fact I had to request ( though this was never mentioned or printed/posted on anything) then told staff gone already. The free internet didnt happen. I had to call front desk again and info given was not correct. Tub filled and drained super slow when using shower. Was told the Manager was on her days off and to call days later when she returned.

It is a shame. Attractive, strategically located, very clean, great pool with views on 5th floor. But woefully understaffed and services were shameful. Also had the misfortune of yahoos traipsing loudly between rooms on my 2nd night for hours on end. And I COULD NOT PARK MY CAR THERE!
