A longstanding symbol of San Diego’s history located in the city’s North Park neighborhood, the LaFayette Hotel & Club is a two and half-acre Colonial-style hotel built in 1946 by young entrepreneur Larry Imig as a haven for young Hollywood hosting Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope. The LaFayette Hotel & Club’s has recently had its first proper restoration since it was built. The 2023 renovation includes (5) new food & beverage outlets along with all available rooms updated and the signature pool that remains the focal point of the property restored. Renowned music producer Swizz Beats has created the hotel’s soundtrack played on a custom-built speaker system designed by Devon Turnbull. The aesthetic embodies the hotel’s connection to its glamorous past while showcasing modern, yet meaningful craftsmanship within a collection of eclectic spaces. Beginners Diner has an authentic drawing that feels as if it has always been there with the hotel built around the concept. The interiors act as an installation of a traditional diner from the 1940s, and details down to the placemats, flatware, and fountain drinks transport guests into this historic era with a diner historian consulted on the details. The restaurant’s chrome storefront and bold neon signage stand out in sharp contrast to its environs, becoming a beacon that signals visitors to explore what is beyond. The concept is a tribute to the Americana hero dishes that helped democratize restaurants mid-century with a nod to traditional Greek and Jewish food influences. The Lobby Bar is circular in design under the soaring glass atrium flooding the space with light and is anchored by the Atlas statue and surrounded by a hand-painted ceiling by Brazilian- based artist Joāo Incerti. The menu will feature thoughtful, classic throwback cocktails served in an environment created to foster connectivity between visitors and locals. This bar is constructed with detailed wood surrounded by delicate banquettes with wrought iron lamps and is a convenient meeting space and starting point to the many dining and entertainment rooms held within the hotel. Quixote is an Oaxacan-inspired concept and Mezcalería designed with monastic qualities that envelop guests with an agnostic sense of worship. The entire space was created from a decommissioned Catholic church in Mexico and reconstructed to showcase dark wood paneling, rough cobblestones that dot the entryway, flickering Santa Maria candles, rich stained-glass windows and baroque pews and banquettes surrounding the pulpit-inspired bar. Heirloom grains and masa with artisanal moles anchor the dining experience alongside creative craft cocktail spotlighting mezcal and Mexican distillates. The Pool Bar on the property is both composed and excessive with a sun-drenched stone patio cascading down into the checkered pool and connecting garden-like deck surrounded by abundant, overgrown bougainvillea, citrus, and jasmine. Brightly colored and scalloped umbrellas shade striped chaise lounges and rattan clamshell chairs along the pool’s perimeter, all designed to evoke 1980’s luxury via the Amalfi Coast. Aperitivos, spritzes, and refreshing bites are featured on the menu. The game room featuring a two-lane bowling alley The Gutter is inspired by Henry Frick's personal bowling alley at the base of the Frick Museum and welcomes guests to a whimsical escape serving classic cocktails including a custom-made gravity-fed ball return system, elegant pool tables, and shuffleboard.

The LaFayette Hotel earns praise for its attentive service, with guests often feeling well cared for, although some have pointed out service inconsistencies. While the rooms' unique decor receives acclaim, critiques of noise and dated aspects surface occasionally. The hotel's amenities, including its historic allure and varied dining options, captivate guests despite some challenges with pool chair reservations. Overall, the hotel's cleanliness receives commendations, contributing to the comfort and luxury of the stay. The vibrant atmosphere is appreciated, though it comes with a caveat of potential noise.

Wow! I can't begin to tell you how amazing this hotel stay turned out to be. I read the reviews but was not convinced and a little leary since it was an intown hotel. Not downtown but kind of tucked away off of El Cahon Blvd. How much could there be to do inside the hotel I thought. Well lots!! There were so many thngs to enjoy. There were 4 restaurants inside the hotel! There was the live band club with dancing, note the place gets a long line so get there early. It opens at 6 and the band comes on at 8pm. There was the incredible game room. NOT TO BE MISSED. And then there was the pool. Just sitting on the balcony, watching the activities around the pool and listening to the music was enought for me. You really have to stay for several days or go back several times to really do everything. Our room was a 2nd floor balcony room overlooking the pool. From the time we checked in to the moment we left the service was impeccable. I told the hotel I was coming to celebrate my birthday and there was a bottle of Proseco in my room with a beautiful note and all of the notepads and letter writing paper and envelopes in the room had my name on it. All the little details made a difference. Von checked us in and was so nice and warm. Our room was so clean and I am a stickler about those things. I am always looking for dust and what might have been missed. The room was large and spacious, the beds were soft and comfortable and the bathroom had a window! There was a bar in the room fully stocked. Not like the little bars in a cabinet but a real live bar full of high end alcohol. It was packed when we checked in on Saturday but Sunday was nice and calm and the music reflects that. There is weekend brunch which was out of this world. Let me say I have traveled extensively worldwide and I was still very impressed with this hotel. We had Sunday brunch outside and the food tasted amazing. (Thank you Luna for great service and patience)! The dinner we had was supreme. We went to Quioxte. Great food and great service (Thanks Roxxane you were the best)! Roxanne had a full dessert and fruit platter sent out because it was my birthday! Upon checking out we were helped by Drew. Lot of love to you Drew for being so good at what you do! Even as we were greeted by both the Valets Benedict and Griffin when leaving the conversation was outstanding. This is an exceptional experience with outstanding staff!

Our stay at The Lafayette was exceptional! First the staff! Were greeted by a super friendly and accommodating Valet Gent(I didn’t catch his name but he had a close trimmed beard). He also helped us as we departed a few days later. Very kind and polite. Drew checked us in and was super welcoming and professional. We grabbed lunch on the patio while our room was being prepared. When our room was ready, Linnea finished our check-in. So wonderful! She had Valet Eric went out of their way to help us to our room since we had so much stuff. Inge was tops at kindness, coffees and info and Jesse was super helpful as well. Our server in Quixote was Daniel and he was amazing. Beginners Diner was delicious on 2 occasions. Front Desk coffee was outstanding on our 3 occasions. Quixote was exceptional. The Gutter is dark & divey yet pristinely clean and well operated. The Lobby Bar is amazing, and Lou Lou’s looked so cool. The Pool Bar made delicious drinks happen. The pool itself was heated perfectly and everything was so wonderfully maintained. Our room (King Patio Suite) was beyond our expectations. Our entire stay was amazingly perfect and enjoyable. The space is out of this world only to be eclipsed by the wonderful staff who were so accommodating and welcoming from start to finish. KUDOS!

The LaFayette really achieves that rare balance of being incredibly luxe and impossibly cool. The decor is phenomenal; every detail, fixture, texture and pattern is just exquisite. And it's such a dynamic property! You can have it high/low and anywhere in between; with the 24/7 diner for late night munchies or early morning breakfast, the Lobby Bar for exceptional cocktails (the gin martini on the menu is flawless, the orange bitters really make it!), and Quixote for a moody, vibey, upscale Mexican dinner. Oh and the coffee bar is awesome, I had the espresso tonic every morning :) I was traveling solo for work and didn't have any colleagues staying nearby, so I really had an adventure of my own and I loved it. Especially as a gay person traveling alone, I always felt safe, respected, taken care of and comfortable wherever I went on property. That was a really nice and special feeling! Regarding the room, I stayed in a Classic King in the back building (recommend this if you're noise-sensitive since music plays pretty late and my guess is the pool area gets even more rowdy in the warmer months). The bed was really comfortable, overstocked minibar is such a nice add-on, the tiled bathroom has so much character, and the walk-in closet was SUCH a bonus! I like to fully unpack and settle in if I'm traveling for more than a night and really appreciated this space. For food and drink recs, these were just a few of my highlights: again, the martini at Lobby Bar, the pork banh mi at Beginner's Diner, chili garlic shrimp tacos at Quixote. Can't wait to come back with my husband this summer and enjoy the pool!

Just stayed here for the second time and the place/experience was just as wonderful as the first time. The attention to detail is unlike anything I have ever seen. Every room is its own mini escape. The hotel staff are personable and informative. To end our stay, we decided to have brunch on the terrace and our waitress, Alicia, was so darling and helpful. The magic is still very much alive at The LaFayette. Can’t wait to go back!

Had lunch at the Beginner’s Diner restaurant within the hotel. First time there. The setting and decor is a replica of 50s and 60s diners. The food good, especially the onion rings and the prices reasonable. For those who enjoy adult beverages there is a full bar and some boozy milkshakes on the menu. Reservations are not accepted. First come first served. We arrive about 1 pm and it was full. The staff was friendly, fun and efficient. There is street parking however not often available. Parking is best with the valet service. The car attendants were courteous and efficient.

After my Airbnb flooded, I scrambled to find a place to stay. I was so happy with my experience at the LaFayette. The staff truly went above and beyond (especially CJ!!!!!) to make me feel welcome and cared for. In the middle of the night, I wandered downstairs for donut. They were sold out, but CJ offered to leave one at my door when they received their delivery. I woke up to a donut the next morning. Those little touches meant a lot after a long day and rough travel experience (flight cancelation, rental car issue, Airbnb flood, etc.). I am so thankful for my great experience here and can't wait to return!

What an experience! My wife and I have been to the hotel on multiple occasions. We have had dinner at Quixote which has such an authentic Oaxacan food and drinks at Gutters where they have pool tables and two bowling lanes. Their diner Beginners has great food. Had their chicken fried steak for breakfast. Tasted great and good size portions. Recently we stayed the night in their poolside queen room and the bed was extremely comfortable and had a sitting area and a full bar! We attended a jazz concert at Lou Lou’s what a beautiful setting and the sound was great. Will definitely return!
