The DoubleTree by Hilton New York Times Square South is a hit with guests for its prime location close to key NYC attractions and transportation, though the vicinity's homelessness issue hasn't gone unnoticed. While the staff earns accolades for their exceptional service, opinions on value diverge due to added fees.
Visitors enjoy the hotel's atmosphere, complete with live music and a rooftop bar, but some are perturbed by the urban noise. Rooms are praised for their cleanliness but criticized for being compact and dimly lit.

Hotel's Favourite
The staff are friendly and welcoming (along with the warm cookie!) and very helpful (even warning us to put on our coats before we left on one particularly cold morning!)
The Midtown location is great for Times Square, Empire State, Madison Square Gardens, Hudson's Yard and 34 Penn St Subway. As it's on 8th Avenue - taxis also pass by regularly.
The team were great from the warm welcome to arranging our taxi back to JFK.
We had breakfast one day and it was a good standard and tasty, though as you expect in hotels, dearer than local delis/diners.
The room was clean and housekeeping were very efficient. When we explained there weren't enough towels, it only took a few minutes for that to be sorted.
Yes - the rooms are on the small side, but what do you expect in a city! The beds were very comfortable and the shower was great.
Worth a visit is Angelina's (bakery) and the Skylight Diner (old style diner) for alternative breakfasts.

Enjoyed our stay at the DT over the New Year’s holiday. Convenient location to Times Square, and many New York locations. Rooms were small but feel this is typical of the location. Rooms were clean and comfortable. No housekeeping during our stay, but clean towels were immediately brought when we requested. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Jessica helped ensure that our room was ready when we arrived, Emilio from maintenance quickly came and reset plugs for us when we noticed an issue, and Deshaun brought us up a complimentary toothbrush when we realized my son forgot his. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and felt extremely safe at this hotel. No restaurant at this hotel, but plenty of food options located around the hotel. We are diamond Hilton members but no real upgrade available as we were in a two bed room. We’re told that all two bed rooms lacked a view which was fine for our needs. If we’d been in a single bed room, diamond members are often upgraded to Empire State Bldg view.
Only request we would have is that the famous DT cookies have a tree nut free option. The walnuts made them a non-option for my kiddos due to my daughter’s allergy.
Thanks DT for a great memorable stay!

Great hotel in NYC with a midtown location right between Penn Station and the Port Authority. Any NY hotel room is going to be small, but this Doubletree has made very efficient use of space. The room has excellent lighting, 100% room darkening shades and outlets with multiple USB ports by both sides of the bed, the desk and the dresser. Similar to the bedroom, the bathroom is small - but a decent size for NY - and again the space is used very efficiently. Already booked next stay.

I stayed at this property earlier this week. Everything was fine, with a late-to-bed evening, until I woke up and pulled back the white bedspread. And there is was, a noticeable s**t-stain on the bedspread (pictures attached). When I left, there was a line at the front desk, so I sent a note to Hilton Guest Services when I hopped on the train. They got back later in the day with a canned apology, and then some "manager" at the property sent another note saying they would credit my Hilton Honor account with 40,000 points. While I appreciate the gesture, 40,000 points don't go as far as they used to. Next time I stay at any Hilton property, the first thing I will do is strip the bed and check the sheets and blankets (as well as the towels). I guess with the lack of reliable employees, hotel management has just thrown up their hands and said "if the guest complains about the filth in the room, we'll give them HH points; it's cheaper than hiring more qualified people."

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at DoubleTree Times Sqaure South. I am disappointed we failed to give you the fine accommodations and consideration we strive for with all our guests– the type of service we pride ourselves on. Please know that your comments have been reviewed in detail, and steps are being taken to ensure these types of issues are handled on a preventive basis. We will alert our housekeeping department of this as well so that they are more aware of checking stains on sheets before making the beds. I’ll start with the pros. We paid a reasonable price for the time of year, it’s very close to Penn Station and Madison Square Gardens and a short walk to Times Square. The rooms were nicely decorated and modern and bed was comfortable. No issues checking in or out. To address some other reviews, yes the traffic is noisy and there are a lot of homeless people about, but that’s to be expected in the area so doesn’t impact my review.
My issue is with the housekeeping, or lack thereof. We had no housekeeping for the first couple of days. I read other reviews saying it had to be requested (we had not been made aware of this and I’ve never had to do this before). We requested housekeeping and they came for the next 2 days, then stopped coming again. So during a 7 night stay, we only had the room cleaned and towels changed twice and this was on consecutive days. Absolutely not the standard I would expect in a 3 star hotel, never mind a 4 star. Also, we were not given a phone number for reception so had to queue up to speak to someone each time. Not sure how this hotel has a 4 star rating, but I wouldn’t book it unless you get it for a 3 star price. And request housekeeping on check in!

I had a great time in New York. The hotel is in a great location where you can choose to either take the train, bus or Uber around the different boroughs and even to another state like New Jersey. The staff was nice but my personal favorite was Daja. Her energy is unmatched and she have the brightest smile I’ve ever seen. I asked her where I should go shopping to get a lot of clothes for a decent price. She did recommend an outlet in New Jersey and when I went I was so happy. She didn’t lie about how great that outlet was. She gave Greta food recommendations and great places to hang out all over the city. I did some great walking with my family thanks to her. That girl deserves a raise on how positive she was overnight plus making sure my entire family felt loved. I definitely recommend this place and my family will be back to stay at this hotel. The rooms were smaller but I know that’s just because of the location itself. The housekeepers were so sweet especially if I had to call down for extra things they came so quick and always asked if I needed something else. The bar drinks were so good and the appetizers. I was also able to watch a live band play while eating which we all thought was so cool. I wish I could keep going but this place is amazing and I can’t wait until I come back.

Location was handy for Penn station, but didn't feel safe when walking around outside . Lots of very undesirable characters hanging around especially outside the hotel entrance. Rooms are small but clean, staff on the front desk are not very welcoming and upon arriving we asked about the extra $500 that had been taken from our credit card on top of the $2,200 that we had paid for two rooms, the manager explained in quite an irritated manner that this was a holding deposit and would be released from our credit card at the end of our stay ,but despite this two weeks later we are still waiting on the money been returned to our account .

Thank you for your feedback of our hotel. My apologies that the security deposit hold was not explained properly during the check in process. The deposit is release upon your departure and can take 5-7 business days to be released but in some cases if your bank is internationally the process can take a bit longer. I have been told that it can take up to a month to be released. I thank you for for your review and will address your comment with my team. Thank you for staying with us.

Fantastic stay at this really nice hotel, staff were extremely kind and very helpful. They made our first trip to USA and New York the best trip ever. Rooms were clean and well presented, they adhered to COVID guidance and offered housekeeping when requested otherwise, you could request fresh towels, toiletries etc. if you did not want this. We had zero disruption from our room, bed was comfortable and all room amenities were good and up to date.
High recommended to all our family and friends bac home in Scotland. We will definitely be back to this establishment. I didn't catch names but the staff on shift from 18/02-22/02 were fantastic! Management should recognize their professional and friendly hard work given to us!

Stayed for 1 week in Feb 2022. This hotel is perfect for those looking for a comfortable base in a good location.
Room: King Empire Room - comfortable bed with a view of the Empire State Building, yes the rooms are smaller than what most other hotels are but your in the centre of New York so I expected a smaller room but still space to walk around the bed and i had a desk and stool in my room to store my suitcase on top of. All modern design and bathroom was spotless. Very comfortable bed.
Location: For us was perfect, 10 minutes walk to Times Square, about 25 minutes to Central Park, and like 3 minutes to Madison Square Gardens. There is a 7/11 shop 2 shops down from the hotel which was perfect for grabbing drinks and snacks. Also some nice restaurants in the area especially NY Pizza Suprema, Trattoria Bianca (Italian), Tick Tock Diner, Liberty Bagels and Andrews Diner all great places nearby to eat at.
Price: Very reasonable I thought for the location, this isn't a 5* hotel with 100s of facilities but it is clean, comfortable, in a good location, has free WIFI and you could not fault the service given. From check in with a welcome cookie to departure day where we were able to store our luggage (no charge) the staff were always helpful and accommodated any requests.

Myself, my 7 year old and parents recently stayed here for 5 nights. Myself and my husband have stayed here in 2020 when it was around the corner and I hadn’t realised it had moved! But actually I preferred this location. It’s a great location as it’s 10 minutes from Times Square one way, 10 minutes to the Empire State Building another and 10 minutes from Hudson Yards another. It’s also right next to Penn station which is a main subway route and there are plenty of convenience shops right next door. There is a public bench area right outside the entrance which granted could have a few odd bods hanging around at times however no one ever bothered us and you walked straight into the main reception which did have security from around 18:00pm each evening and was only accessed by keycard after 22:00pm each evening. Check in was smooth, easy and staff always super friendly. We were on the 27th floor and the lift was again always quick and fast! The view was wonderful, looked over onto Hudson Yards and a great view of the Edge. I had a room with two double beds and I felt the space was great tbh! There is also a massive TV, a fridge and safe. There is no bath (no problem for me) but the shower was really powerful. It was spotlessly clean and housekeeping cleaned everyday without fail. Wifi was also free and quick. There are some mixed reviews about this hotel but honestly from someone who works in hotels this was really great for the location, price and service.

Like a minute at most.
I did not personally arrive or leave during that timeframe, but the hotel had a security official/manager at the entrance door late at night, so if the uber drops you off right in front of the hotel, that should be okay (though I am not in a position to guarantee anything).
