This was my third stay at the Hotel St. James and also the longest (9 day stay).

We were given a room at the front of the hotel which we requested to change after two nights. The beds were far less comfortable and the noise appreciably louder than any stay prior, but the prior stays we had been assigned rooms at the back at check-in.

Moving rooms to an end unit at the back was so much better. Depending on how busy the hotel is and the room level you booked, they will do their best to accommodate you. I would not expect to book the smallest, cheapest room (which I have stayed in comfortably on another trip) and then complain it appears smaller than the photos and ask for a better one, which was the conversation overheard while we waited to request a room change.

Our room change did mean we had to wait a bit longer to get the hot water up and running in the shower, but this was a small trade off for sound sleep for the 7 nights we had remaining on our trip.

The hotel was built in 1901 and has been in service a year longer than the much more advertised historic hotel The Algonquin a block over. The hotel has shown up in Tom Hanks' Big, Al Pacino's Cruiser, and the slasher flick Maniac, if you're a film buff. (If you are interested in the history of the place, I've put a link in my bio that you can access.)

Old buildings are going to have slower hot water, odd room angles, and creaky elevators. If you want posh, this is not the place for you. Bring a travel kettle and your own tea bags if it's that important to you. Otherwise, grab a coffee at the deli next door on your way out to explore the city each morning and be grateful you aren't getting hit with these resort fees so many other Times Square hotels are now tacking on for their amenities.

If you want a clean room at a great rate, in the middle of everything, in a building with character and history, and can wait a few minutes for hot water, then the Hotel St. James is for you.

Since my last visit, both the rooms we were in had newer, darker wood blinds, which was an improvement from the white mini-blinds from prior trips. I still find having a sleep mask very useful. Mine has bluetooth and I ran a white noise app from my phone to drown out noise as well, although the first two nights at the front of the hotel meant even that did not drown out everything.

You are a minute away from Times Square, five minutes from Bryant Park, and about a seven minute walk from Rockefeller Center. The location is fabulous for tourists wanting to be close to Broadway and everything in Midtown.

I will stay here again and again because the staff has always been very helpful, the rooms clean, and the location unbeatable for the things we want to be near on our NYC adventures.

We chose this hotel due to is proximity to Times Square. It was reasonably priced compared to others in the same location and the idea is to spend as little time in the hotel! It's a little old fashioned and the view from the room was not the best. The room was compact but we have paid a lot more for a lot less space in NYC. In line with many hotels, housekeeping is not standard and you have to request it by hanging the sign on your door. There were times when the hot water was a little cool but overall we had hot water when we wanted to shower so no complaints there. Someone has mentioned lack of plugs. Our room had 3 accessible electric points but as we have a universal device that will charge 4 items at the same time we didn't have a problem. The highlight of the hotel is Joey Sasson on reception who we met on our arrival and who helped organise our transportation to JFK on our departure. The cafe next door to the hotel catered for all our breakfast needs. They also serve meals and sell a variety of beverages

The staff here is ying-yang. You either get the super cheery nice person, or the monotone kind of jerk one. Front desk is all men. At least is all that we got.
The area is centric, a block from Times Square and the theatres.
We were there for five days and things were good. Then on the third day, everything started going down. The cleaning ladies left our windows open (hello it was snowing) and turned off the heater. I had to call the front desk and a staff member came and closed them for me. Then on our last day, there was not hot water. Um, again, it was snowing and freezing. It was our last day there so I leaped and showered with cold water to not waste anymore time cause it took them 2 hours to get the hot water back. If you want to leave your luggage after checking out, there are lockers at the lobby and there are different rates. Our friend paid 5 dollars. It’s not like other hotels where it’s a curtesy.
Aside from a couch across the front desk where you can hang out, there’s a lobby in the back and a bar. We hung out there and ordered take out. It was cool.
I would suggest them having coffee 🤷🏻‍♀️
The ambiguity of the staff threw me off. I don’t want to say it’s an NYC thing...

I stayed here for one night in June, 2022. The front desk staff was very pleasant and the check-in went very smoothly. My room was on the interior, looking into a open area in the middle of the building. The weather was comfortable, so I did not use the ductless mini split air conditioner in the room. The bathroom was spotless and the room had a mini ironing board that I used to take the wrinkles out of my packed dress shirt. There are two smallish elevators and one was out of service for a portion of my stay, making the wait time a bit long at checkout. The hotel is so conveniently located, with lots of good breakfast and dining choices nearby, that the lack of any restaurant facilities was not even noticed.

We spent ten nights at this hotel in September 2021. I selected it over other properties for its reasonable rates and its proximity to Times Square and the many sightseeing options in Manhattan. This was our first trip ever to NYC and we knew that we would be spending time in our hotel only to sleep; we were going to be on the go from early morning until late at night. The Hotel St. James turned out to be the perfect choice! As others have stated, it is a no frills place; the room was spartan with no frills, as is common in an older hotel. Some have mentioned the lack of hot water. We found that to be the case until we learned to let the water run for several minutes. Quirky trick but it worked. Due to COVID-related concerns, they did not have daily housekeeping service. We didn't care, since we were in the room only to sleep and shower and staff brought clean towels when we requested them. I had read on another site that there were limited plug-ins to charge electrical devices. The three of us all had at least one electronic device that needed charging so prior to our trip, I ordered an extension cord that had both plug-in and USB ports at the end of the cord. The only electrical outlet was behind the bed but the cord I'd purchased was long enough to allow us to all get phones, etc. charged easily. A special thank you goes to Joey at the front desk. He was fantastic in helping me arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel and back so that we did not have to pay the steep cab fares from Newark to Midtown. He also frequently checked with us to make sure that our needs were being met. What a great ambassador for the hotel and for NYC! We're already planning a return trip to NYC and you can bet that we will stay at the Hotel St. James again!

Myself and my partner visited New York at the end of February this year and what an amazing time we had! We stayed at the “Hotel St. James” which was in the perfect location for what we wanted. It was a 2 minute walk from time square but we found it nice and quiet in the hotel which was lovely. The hotel was small (boutique like) and old fashioned in its decor but was still nice and clean.
I can’t remember the number of our room but it had a double bed, 2 bedside tables, a tall mirror, chest of draws, a TV, lamps and a table with 2 chairs.
We had a little cupboard with a rail where we hung our clothes, an iron and ironing board and it had a safe on top with extra storage which was handy. The bathroom had a step so you had to step up into the bathroom and the bathroom contained a toilet, bath with a shower head and a sink basin. All in all, a decent and clean room. Our window overlooked another hotel or an apartment of some sort which we didn’t particularly like but that was our opinion.
The hotel was cheap and cheerful and suited us as we only went there to sleep, wash and change as we were in New York itself for nearly all of the day, everyday we were there.
The receptionists were very helpful with us, especially regarding our transportation home as one receptionist rang our mini bus firm to make sure that we were picked up on time as we were unsure😊
Myself and my partner would definitely stay here again😊
Just to note, the hotel doesn’t have any restaurant or any food facilities but there is a bakery and cafe next door which serves fresh pastries and hot meals and also an Irish pub next door to the bakery / cafe in which we went to a few times which served great food!

The Hotel St James was absolutely perfect for all our needs.

Having stayed in various hotels in New York previously, from posh boutique hotels to mid range hotels, I have got to say that of them all, Hotel St James is the one that I will definitely return to.

The hotel is a bit dated and old fashioned, but what it lacks in décor etc it makes up for it in location.

It is warm, clean and friendly, and Joey on the reception is just absolutely fantastic. He is a typical New Yorker and is a mine of knowledge and so helpful. I could just sit and listen to him all day long, he is so lovely and helpful.

This hotel is right on Times Square. McDonalds is a 2 minute walk at the end o the street, Starbucks is across the road, and there's a deli next door that sells amazing bagels for breakfast and some delicious food for dinner or tea time etc.

The added bonus with this hotel is that they don't charge resort fees.

There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room or on the hotel...but as mentioned above, there is a deli next door or Starbucks across the road, but due to ill health I'm a poor sleeper and a proper coffee addict and didn't want to be running out for coffees during the night when I wake, so I just took a cheap plastic kettle and a 4 plug extension cable with me and my own coffee and made my own in my room every morning and night :)

I would definitely recommend visiting this hotel as you're central for everywhere.

Oh and a wee bit of useless information....but Tom Hanks filmed a scene from Big in this hotel :)

To be clear, this is a "basic" lodging, with no frills, but with all the theaters and restaurants of the Times Square location within a few hundred feet, you do not need a whole lot of extras. The rooms are spacious and clean. The shower has lots of hot water. They give you lots of towels and shampoos. And, as many reviewers note, the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful.

We booked 3 rooms to visit as a family during the holidays. We were on the 7th floor. Good-front desk staff was great, check in was smooth and they’ll store luggage for you. The location is probably the best part of this hotel. Map it and you’ll see why. Shower nice and hot. The not so good-it’s an old hotel. It’s beat in some areas, worn furniture, little frays on carpet, bathroom shows age. Our room had radiator heat-great but very hot. We turned on the window ac to cool it off and block out noise. The mattresses in all 3 of our rooms were way past their age, sagging in the middle, thin and stiff. That would be our biggest complaint. Otherwise, if you’re just looking for a simple place to shower and rest with a great location, it’s a good option. Also, look for Joey at the desk. He’s a neat guy to talk to.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. It is a basic hotel in an old building but it was clean we were able to walk to nearly everywhere we went and it was close to several subway stations. We had breakfast in the cafes next door or next door but one and the room suited our needs for somewhere to sleep and shower. Previous reviews mention no hot water, I thought we had no hot water but then discovered that hot water came out the cold tap on the bath and basin. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and a small problem with the plumbing in our room was quickly rectified. I would stay here again.
