The JW Marriott Essex House New York garners applause for its cleanliness and stylish atmosphere that embodies New York elegance. While many guests praise the hotel's prime Midtown location and comfortable rooms, some express concerns over value, citing high rates and unexpected costs that do not align with the perceived 5-star experience. Service quality receives mixed reviews, with reports of both highly attentive staff and less responsive service. Amenities like the breakfast are popular, but issues with Wi-Fi and in-room conveniences have been noted.

I am currently staying in the JW Marriott. We are in a junior suite. The room is nice and spacious. Hotel and location are perfect for getting around the city but for anyone booking or coming to stay be aware that on top of the nightly rate you also have to pay an additional $45 tax per night per room. This can be used off food and drink in the hotel & if you don’t use it, you loose it.
We booked though booking.com with breakfast included. At check in it was never explained to us that the included breakfast is only continental & 2 eggs. We found this out on day 3 of our stay. Average breakfast cost is $100 for 2 in the hotel.
There is no free WIFI unless you sign up to Marriott Bonvoy programme or use the $45 to pay for hi speed internet. There are also no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Overall not what I would expect for a 5* hotel when spending over $1000 a night on a room.

Just had a terrific two nights at the JW Marriott Essex House. Way more pros than cons and we are excited to add this hotel to our regular places to stay in NYC. The front desk check in was easy and kind and there were 4 available attendants ready to help. We had an Executive Suite on the 30th floor and although a bit of the room could use some updates (sheets a little scratchy and some dings/bangs on the walls) overall we loved the space, the views and it is worth mentioning that the room was quiet and free of street noise, traffic and neighbor noise. There is plenty of room to relax and spread out and the couch/ottoman area was separate enough from the bed to create two distinct spaces both with TVs if desired. You can also have kids stay on the pull out sofa if needed. The bathroom was big with separate shower and tub and that is always an extra bonus in NYC. The executive lounge was open for breakfast and although it was busy both days we really enjoyed the space and the chance to sit for a casual breakfast and read a complimentary NY Times. We took advantage of the free MOMA tickets as well and used the $45 resort credit one night on drinks at the hotel restaurant. The hotel gym on the 3rd floor is a bit dated but well equipped and there is both a sauna and steam room in the bathrooms. You can't really beat this location for running in the park or going to the theater and it makes a really good option Manhattan option. The house cleaning staff and front desk both deserve special mention for overall friendliness and professionalism.

Of course, there is the view. Of course, the big apple has lost it all regarding affordable rates when it comes to be anywhere near Central Park or having even the slightest view on it. From this point, Essex house remains a must : full frontal view, unobstructed, first row on CP and located on one of if not the best corners of NY. But does this extraordinary location, associated to relatively low prices compared to concurrents (eg Mandarin Oriental) authorize to cut on things like cleanliness, service and breakfast to the point that guests can feel like in an empty shell that once was, regarding it's architecture, the volumes, the decoration and the location, a true luxury hotel, but which reflects more a 4 star mid range place right now. I do not think so. Of course each and every hotel in New York has to struggle to exist but being part of an international brand, we found that the state in which we found our room was a disgrace for what should reflect what the brand make's best. Every hotel can fade a little bit with age mainly those having to face rapid guests turnover in big cities but for God's sake, maintenance must be kept as good as it can : dusty surfaces and carpet or furniture stains are not a point we should even be discussing of in this category of hotels. Come on Marriott, you can do better !

Not the best 5 star hotel, probably not even average, great for Business Trips and Meetings, with family I would not go. Large rooms, spacious shower, impeccable cleanliness. I generally bring my own mattress topper to protect me from hotel mattresses, which are sometimes dirty even in the best hotels, but here hygiene is impeccable. Good quality in-house restaurant, bar open until 12.30 pm. For joggers, the location in front of central park should not be underestimated.

My husband and I have always been a fan of JW Marriott (it all started when we had our honeymoon at JW Marriott Khao Lak). Since then, whenever we have the opportunity to book at a JW Marriott hotel in our destination, we lock it in!

Let me start off with the splendid art deco ambience of JW Marriott Essex. Its pristine atmosphere is awe inspiring.

New York is the epitome of hustle and bustle and in the conclusion of your day, you would want to shut down and rest with utmost comfort which you will at JWME. They havr plush beddings, spotless clean room and a marble bathroom with a shower that has the perfect water pressure.

The view of central park is one of the amazing selling point of JWME. It is very relaxing just to stare at the views in the morning and ponder while watching the city lights at night.

The location and the vicinity is another selling point, the hotel is a few blind steps from Central Park, around 15 minutes walk from Times Square and Rockefeller Centre.

Thefood at Southgate is scrumptious that offers a variety of choices. They got the best wedge salad and the central park mule (cocktail) is a must try.

The customer service is beyond fantastic! This is the main reason why we love JW Marriott, their staff are well trained especially with interpersonal communication skills, efficiency and hospitality. They are simply the best! Thanks Greg and the team ❤️

My group of 3 had a wonderful staycation here over Labor Day weekend. I reached out to Guest Relations in advanced letting them know that we were celebrating a bridal shower. They went absolutely above and beyond in making my friends feel extra special.

Upon arrival to our Essex Room, we were greeted with a welcome gift with a few JW Marriott branded goodies and a personalized handwritten note congratulating my friend on her engagement. A few hours later, we were even more surprised with room service delivery of chocolate covered strawberries and prosecco. This is the most well treated I’ve ever felt at a hotel and greatly appreciated the hotel’s effort in making my friends feel extra special for the weekend.

Room: 5/5

Very spacious for an NYC hotel. The room came with 1 king bed and a sofa. Well-sized bathroom as well.

Amenities: 5/5

Well stocked restroom and (for purchase) mini bar. The room does not come with a mini fridge, but a note on the tables says you can request for one.

Lots of water bottles available in the 24 hour gym.

Member Benefits: Platinum Elite

The hotel was full and I was unable to get a room upgrade, but was more than satisfied given the welcome gifts.

The lounge offers a very extensive buffet style breakfast, with pastries, fruits, hot food, and several coffee and drinks available.

It was closed on the Friday we arrived, so I wasn’t able to see it other than for breakfast.

$45 destination credit is provided, which can be used towards food and beverage at the downstairs restaurant, mini bar, or room service. My group decided to order room service, just note that there is a 18% service charge and $10 delivery automatically included to the order. The credit also includes access to some museums and shows.

We stayed at the JW Marriott New York from December 27 to January 5, and this stay was simply catastrophic. Here's why:

Unbearable noise disturbance: The room allocated to us was located next to a large outdoor fan, producing constant noise, day and night. Cannot sleep or relax! Despite our multiple complaints at the front desk, the proposed change of room rehoused us just above... with exactly the same problem.

Unacceptable management: The hotel manager refused to come and see the nuisance, although several guests complained of the same problem. She even admitted that these nuisances were recurrent and known to the hotel. Yet these rooms continue to be allocated, which is unacceptable.

Serious service breaches:

The room was not made for two consecutive days.
The bathrobes were never changed throughout the stay.
The dirty coffee cups were in the room for a whole week.
Insulting compensation: After days of nuisance and bad conditions, the hotel offered us... 400 euros in compensation. This is a tiny fraction of the cost of our stay and does not compensate for any inconvenience. Especially since we were not looking for compensation, but simply a room where we could have enjoyed a restful sleep and our stay. In the end, the noise of the cars would have been much more bearable than that of the outside fan.

As loyal members of the Marriott Group, we are deeply shocked by this lack of professionalism, consideration and respect for guests. This hotel does not deserve its status or its exorbitant rates.

We strongly advise against this property to anyone wishing a relaxing and quality stay. Marriott must take responsibility and offer meaningful solutions.

I really wanted to give this hotel 5 stars BUT I was left with an uncomfortable feeling at checkout and thus this rating .
Apparently if you remove an item from the minibar ( in order to put milk, yogurt etc inside) you get charged automatically. And it is expensive!! There is no note warning about this.
So at check out I realized I was charged for quite an amount for minibar usage. I had to explain and argue in order to get this taken if my bill. And then I was reprimanded by the young associate….
As Platinum Elite, I get late checkout- 4pm . Starting at 3:30pm I got phone calls and housekeeping knocking on my door inquiring and reminding me about the fact that I needed to checkout…. Quite bothering and totally out of place!
These are little things but they bother , disturb and should not happen in such a hotel. I feel service should be more welcoming and not so strict.

This is a luxurious hotel in prime location, the room was spacious and clean .
The breakfast buffet is amazing even though the lounge gets over crowded .

The location is hard to beat; excellent. Front of house and concierge were excellent and the public areas very well maintained.

I have previously stayed at the hotel twice before and had excellent stays. This stay - on points as a platinum member - I found deeply disappointing, especially given the expense (given the number of points). I really regret staying there.

The frustrations:

- The Executive lounge is not a great space. It was overwhelmed at breakfast time; not a pleasant place to start your day (whereas the restaurant is great - after two days, I couldnt face visiting the lounge again). Food quality in the lounge was at best mixed. There is only one coffee machine and you have to queue for what isn’t a particularly nice cup of coffee. In the evenings you have to pay for an alcoholic drink, whilst canapés were poor

- The lobby lounge was understaffed on a Sunday and as a result the service was very poor. But the food was good

- I was on points and had a standard room. Whilst being a platinum member does not guarantee an upgrade, I had hoped for a much better room given the hotel is a JWR and an expensive one at that. It definitely was not of a JWM standard and in Europe Courtyards have been better. I am deeply disappointed to have spent as many points as I did on what was a dark and not pleasant space

- There were other issues with service

I have tried to engage with management but have not heard back. I am really disappointed as this hotel does have pleasant rooms and has in the past provided me with excellent service. The issues with the Executive Lounge I think are more fundamental. But I am not sure I would return, notwithstanding the excellent location and my locality to Marriott.

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback about your recent stay. As a valued Platinum Elite member and a repeat guest, we sincerely apologize for the aspects of your experience that fell below your expectations. While we are pleased you enjoyed our excellent location, front desk service, and well-maintained public areas, we deeply regret the frustrations you encountered, particularly with the Executive Lounge, lobby service, and room allocation. Your comments regarding the overcrowded Executive Lounge, limited amenities, and food quality have been shared with our Food and Beverage team for immediate review. Additionally, we are addressing the staffing concerns in our lobby lounge to ensure prompt and attentive service, even during peak times. Regarding your room, we understand your disappointment, especially when redeeming points as a loyal guest. We will review our processes to better recognize and accommodate our Platinum members in the future. We also regret the lack of response when you reached out to our management team. This does not reflect the high standard of care we aim to provide. Please rest assured that your concerns are being addressed at the highest level to ensure a better experience for all our guests.

The location of this hotel is top-notch: in midtown Manhattan on Central Park South. This is an old, elegant facility. What could go wrong: the service was not consistent with the graceful physical attributes nor with the prices being charged.

The ice machine on my floor was not working. I had to call maintenance to get the window curtain in my room fixed. When I first arrived, there was a room service dining table in the hallway. A day later, the table was still there with the food decaying. On my second day, it was finally gone. Many employees had walked up and down the hallway but somehow failed to remove the table for 2 days. On my last day, I was woken up by a cleaning staff member asking at what time I was going to check out. I found this odd, because I was not near the checkout time (in addition, being a Platinum Marriott member, I am guaranteed a late check out). There was a billing problem with the mini-bar, I had not accessed it but was still charged for this (I called when I got home and had this error corrected).

On the positive side, the hotel entryway is attractive, indicative of an elegant building. The hotel placed a mini-refrigerator in my room at no extra cost. I had access to the executive lounge, being a Platinum member. The breakfast selection was good. They had fresh fruit, though limited. I noticed there were no alternative protein sources (e.g., impossible Foods, Beyond Meat).

I was surprised to see that this hotel still promotes the New York Tiimes. Copies were made available to guests throughout the building.
