Nestled in the heart of the city, the InterContinental New York Barclay, an IHG Hotel, stands out for its central location, which guests have called an urban sanctuary close to key attractions and conveniences. The staff's exceptional attentiveness often receives high marks, as does the hotel's cleanliness, with spotless rooms and meticulous housekeeping. However, the rooms themselves elicit mixed reactions, with some visitors enjoying their comfort and others pointing out issues with size and noise. While the ambiance is generally appreciated, blending tradition with modernity, the mandatory amenity fees and the perceived value have been a sore point for many travelers.

I had to wait for 3 months before TP would let me review my most recent stay at the Barclay.

Travelling to the NJ/NY area for a Baby Shower, my wife and I were fortunate to find space (and an upgrade) at the Barclay in New York. We last stayed September last year and found the Property and its employees excellent. This visit, I was at first surprised to find some of those employees no longer with the property but if anything the level of service , hospitality and attention to detail under GM Sofia (thanks for the upgrade and goodies) has increased with the addition of Hotel Manager Matthias Kaiser . Mr Kaiser was on top of everything and stated in constant touch with us and this was the first time all the benefits afforded an Ambassador with the facility fee were explained in great detail for us to fully utilize those benefits during our stay.

On checking in Sunday (early so I should not be complaining) my room wasn't ready and I later found out that it was an Ambassador guest who had on-lined checked out but continued to stay in his room for the late check-out accorded their status. I am also an Ambassador but know when I on-line check out or settle my bill earlier than check-out, I notify the front desk so they know not to notify housekeeping to start cleaning the room for the next guest. To my fellow guests, try and remember that in your visits so other guests aren't waiting around. And one more reminder to my fellow guests, I saw most guests at The Parlour leave nothing on the table when they left. These service employees work really hard to provide a great experience. Remember to leave a gratuity. I could tell by my Housekeeper's reaction to us every day that not many leave a gratuity every day. These are the same guests who gripe on social media about rates being added by Hotels and lack of service. Not in this Property.

Despite the room situation, Mr Kaiser sent me to guest relations and this is where I was fortunate to meet Sanela M who was amazing. First she explained the issue, then found me another room and then also arranged for our accompanying relative with 2 small daughters to have their luggage out of the room assigned to one on our floor. All of this on a Sunday when staff would not have been as heavy as a weekday. She was simply amazing and kept in touch with Mr Kaiser (who was off BTW) until we were all settled. Kudos Sanela

Our upgrade was awesome, Housekeeping was great and this visit made use of The Parlour restaurant and while it may look small at first glance, have tables all around so that guests did not have to wait very long for seating. The buffet is full of everything one would need, from fruit, to breads, cereals, a hot breakfast and with Easter coming up had special cookies for guests. The bar at night looks like a movie scene. Check it out before you leave (using your daily credit)

The Bellmen staff were also excellent with moving, storing and packing luggage.

BTW one of the vouchers provided is for Ole and Steen next door. You must try their pastries all day, lunch and evening items (all with a 10% off)

Another tip. Parking can be found 1 block from the hotel and using ParkWhiz (no in/out) found a rate under $35 a day, unheard off.

Located on the East side, it's easy to find an Uber and getting around is a breeze (as long as you don't have to go to the West side). Lots of restaurants around and easy to find shopping, it's an awesome location.

While there try visiting the upgraded Grand Central with its amazing food hall

Kudos again to GM Sofia for running one of the best InterContinental's we have stayed at. I was glad to Meet Manager Kaiser on our last day to thank him personally and to send our regards to the GM for a wonderful experience.

It was a special occasion, 8 nights stay, and our expectations of Barclay were exceeded. Our room on the 15th floor was overlooking the quiet side street, with enough day light and privacy. We used our resort fee every day in the Gin Parlor, which was a fun thing to do before going out (kudos to Mauricio Citrolo and other friendly and knowledgeable staff members in the GP). The hotel serves as a great base for business and leisure guests, can't beat its' convenient location to various subway stations and Grand Central terminal and short walking distance to all the Midtown attractions. Winning!
Our Premier 2 Double Beds room was generously appointed with more than enough space for two adults (with large suitcases), bathroom was beautifully arranged - authentic nyc subway tiles and marble bath/shower with bright lights and good air vent. The AC was working perfectly and windows could be cracked open to provide some air. The walls were adorned with quirky framed pictures and a calming wall size mural of Hudson river valley. Cable TV channels were plentiful only to be implemented by smart tv features - highly tech friendly. Wi-Fi worked as it should in our day and age. We have requested the mini fridge for our room, wich was seamlessly brought up to our room by a cheerful staff member. No request was too much trouble. The maids were smiling and replenished our (excellent) bath products upon request. The front house was also very attentive, so was the bell staff.
Special thanks are due to Ms. Sofia L. Vandaele, who made our stay perfect with delicious gifts in the room and personal greeting cards, as it was my birthday.
Highly recommend Barlcay!

Chose this hotel as a base for a week's holiday in New York on the basis of price, star rating, other reviews and location. We chose a room with 2 double beds. The room had all expected amenities but felt a bit cramped with 2 double beds. Housekeeping and cleaning were excellent although our hotel towelling bathrobes disappeared a few days into the stay and weren't replaced (not enough of a problem for us to mention it during the stay).

The location is excellent if you want to do the tourist "must sees"; most are in walking distance. There are very good coffee shops and restaurants nearby.

The staff were all pleasant and helpful.

The "destination fee" is a problem. We'd read about it in reviews and asked for it to be explained when we checked in sometime around 9.00pm It was explained but we were too tired after a long flight from London, and still on UK time, to take it in properly. It's a compulsory daily fee ($35 by the end of our stay), per room, that entitles you to various "credits" against expenditure in the hotel (eg $25 off 'food and beverages'). If you don't spend up to the fee amount, it can't be carried over to the next day so you spend it in the hotel or lose it. It's a ploy/incentive to get you to spend money in the hotel and it also seems to be a ploy that hotels use to make their room rates on hotel booking sites look lower than they actually are. This hotel doesn't have a traditional restaurant and coffee shop (it serves breakfast and bar snacks) so it has fewer amenities on which to spend your money

We were able to argue that we checked in too late to have a reasonable chance of spending up to the fee on the first day, so we were given a credit. Also, when we checked out, the bill didn't show how the credits were applied each day so it was hard to check it. The bill did show that the fee had increased from $30 - $35 for the last couple of days. We weren't notified about this in advance so the hotel agreed to refund the increase.

The Barclay does most of what you expect from a decent 4 star hotel. But a good hotel should let you choose whether you want to spend your money in it without using tricks like this to get into your wallet. It felt sad to end a holiday there feeling that we had to check our bill thoroughly because we didn't trust the place to be straight.

Hello jontag, Thank you for staying with us at the Barclay and for sharing the great feedback on the hotel's location and staff; we appreciate sharing your sentiment. As far as the amenity fee, we are transparent on our booking sites around the nightly fee and all of its inclusions, which provide a 4 to 1 value if our guests do take advantage. For the $35 fee, this includes $30 F&B, $15 Laundry Credit, Premium WiFi, Unlimited Local/Long Distance, Bloomingdale's shopping passes, 15% off bus tours, and discounted in room massage. Do let us know if you choose to return so we can ensure an upgrade and more complete stay. Jeff Krauthamer Hotel Manager

I have stayed at the Barclay at least ten times since 2018; each stay is at least three nights. The hotel is in a great location close to many attractions, yet it's nice and quiet at night. The rooms are wonderfully appointed and comfortable. Sadly, the staff is not as welcoming as the hotel itself.

Upon arrival, I wasn't even greeted with a simple smile, and the front desk staff didn't even acknowledge my elite status or give me the upgrade I was guaranteed when I made the reservation, and no one even offered to help me with my bags. The housekeeping never changed the toiletries nor the towels during my stay, and I doubt they did anything other than making the bed. They are also extremely loud, as I can hear them outside my room. I don't know what's the point of "Do no Disturb" as they keep knocking and calling even when the sign is on the door,

One night at exactly 11:23 pm I called room service with no one answering, and 11:30, exactly when room service closes, a lady from the front desk answered and rudely stated "the kitchen is closed it's 11:30" I explained to her that I have been calling since 11:23 and no one answered, yet she again rudely replied, "the kitchen is closed I cannot take your order." I was so surprised that she didn't even apologize or offer an alternative or even a suggestion. During the summer, I stayed at the Intercontinental Amstel in Amsterdam, the staff there ordered me takeout because the dish I wanted was out of stock, and this was at 2:00 am. The staff members there are very different from those at the Barclay, as they go above and beyond what is expected and truly make you feel like a welcomed guest.

The Barclay used to be excellent when I first started staying there, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I have kept returning, thinking that these issues are the exception and not the norm; however, I was disappointed. I am surprised that this is the treatment an IHG Royal Ambassador gets, I can't imagine how a first-time guest is treated.

I don't think I will come back to the Barclay. I have given it many chances, and even when they checked-in another guest into my room, and they walked in on me while I was asleep, I simply laughed it off with the other guest. I have voiced my concerns about these issues to the hotel management before, but I see little has changed, and sadly things are becoming worse. The building is beautiful, the atmosphere in the lobby is quite lovely and the rooms are cozy. I used to recommend this hotel to my family, friends and clients; however, I can no longer do this as the service is subpar for one of IHG's flagship hotels.

We spent 5 nights in a club room which we had access to the club lounge for the duration.
The lounge is beautifully set out with a great choice of breakfast after snack and evening canapés.
Paulette was a wonderful host along with her colleagues nothing was too much trouble and they do an amazing job always keeping the lounge looking impeccable.
Our room had a lovely large bed which was so comfortable we asked for a fridge in our room and that was dealt with swiftly.
The highly recommended the Barclay it was such a great hotel, relaxing atmosphere so much so were playing a weeks stay in October along with our son who I know will love the facilities the Barclay has to offer. Room 1218

...while the staff is typically friendly (and I haven’t booked as a IHG Gold member) there were still some unpleasant issues during our stay.

On arrival day it took housekeeping more than four (4) hours to bring two pairs of slippers to our room. We had to wait until 1am to finally be able to slip into something more comfy. Annoying.

And while working out in the gym at 7pm the cleaning crew passed, cleaned up a bit (omitting a couple of littered plastic cups) and turned off the gym’s lights on me when leaving the room. Not to mention no ‘hello’ or ‘good bye’ was uttered. Not nice.

Rooms are clean and well equipped, nothing to argue here. The walls could be thicker to drown out the amorous adventures of the couple next door though :)).

We stayed here for 4 nights in early March and we found the hotel to be clean and comfortable and the staff to be friendly and helpful. It's located close to Grand Central Terminal and the major sights in Midtown. The hotel gives guests $25 a day discount on food and drink charged to the room but wasn't fully explained upon arrival and so we didn't take full advantage. As with all NYC hotels the food and drink was expensive so we had breakfast every morning in Ashley's Fine Foods across the road from the hotel which was good value for money. Please be aware that the mini bar has censors which means that if an item is removed or moved you will be charged meaning that you can't put your own drinks on the shelves but there is room to put a small bottle or can of your own. Also, the ironing board in our room was broken.
We were there to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday and having read other reviews we had hoped for a room upgrade but didn't get one, however the room we had booked was sufficient for our needs. We did receive two small cup cakes on arrival two days before her birthday which was a nice touch albeit less than we would've expected from a 5 star hotel. All in all it was a great hotel and we would stay here again.

We went to New York in December to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary and my ‘special’ Birthday ,I was soooo very pleased that we booked this hotel .

I am a ‘clean freak’ and this hotel surpassed all our expectations regarding this, the bed was so comfortable after a hard day sightseeing lol and the room and overall hotel decor is so classic and welcoming we really felt as if we were treating ourselves staying there.

The hotel is very central for attractions and far enough away from Times Square so you don’t have to travel through ‘the thick of it’ to get back to your sanctuary , and that’s how it felt a sanctuary to rest weary feet and reflect on the fabulous things you’d seen , readying yourself , refreshed for the next day:-)

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff we came into contact with and the icing on the cake was some treats sent to our room by the management to congratulate us on the the special events we were celebrating.

This will be our go to hotel if we go back to New York and we would highly recommend it to friends and family going .

Thank you Intercontinental New York Barclay

The hotel is ideally located, close to the Rockerfeller Centre and is an easy walk to Times Square. The hotel decor was lovely and the hotel is clean. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfy.

However, not so good was the amenity charge and the reception staff were not the most helpful. This felt like a hotel for business clients rather than for tourists.

Be prepared to pay an amenity charge of $30 plus taxes per room per night. While this charge can be used for credit for food and drink, the prices are relatively expensive and the hotel bar, the "Gin Parlour", tended to busy and loud in the evening as the hotel seemed to have lots of conferences. We went to the diners nearby for breakfast and also Ess-a bagel which we would recommend.

The Intercontinental Barclay is In an excellent location. The rooms are beautiful although lack sound proofing because you can hear the conversation happening in the room next door. The service is what you’d expect from a 5 star hotel. I actually really like this hotel.

So why am I only giving 2 stars? The answer is because of the hidden charges that are applied to your room rate. A little bit about me. I have platinum status with 2 major global airlines, and silver with a 3rd. I spend 50+ nights a year staying in hotels and I’ve stayed at this hotel a few times. This is my 1st hotel review and this was the 1st time I’ve had a “destination fee” of $30 (plus tax) per day applied to my bill. The “destination fee” is NOT applied to corporate room rates.

What is a “destination fee?“ - Currently 100 NYC hotels out of 700+ Apply a destination fee. This is currently $30 (plus tax) which is applied to your bill daily to make your stay more enjoyable....Eg. it allows you to enter the restaurant free of charge - why is a hotel even charging guests a restaurant entry fee? When people can walk in off the street and use the restaurant for free. There isn’t any guidelines on what destination fees cover. It’s just an amount the hotel can add to your daily rate.

The “destination fee” is a hidden charge allowing the hotel to offer a lower daily rate when it’s really $30 per night higher. You will not see the destination fee as a line item. It’s hidden in “taxes and service charges”. The destination fee is also increasing. The Hotel’s General Managers decides what “destination fee” is applied. It’s not applied to corporate rates.

When booking a hotel in NYC you might want to consider a boutique hotel that is more honest and transparent in the actual daily room rate. Check if a hidden charge is going to be applied.

What is the required security deposit? Thank you

This is a hotel and not an apartment so there is no security deposit required. When you book rates it will tell you if they need an advanced deposit, full payment or nothing at all. There will be a hold on your card upon checkin to cover any incidentals (minibar, snacks, etc...) Hope this helps.

Yes, the US has to flat pin plug but most hotel concierge have adapters that they can lend while you are there. Ideally you bring an international adapter with you. Also make sure your electronics allows for US current.
