Wow- the staff, 100% of them, were the most consistently courteous and helpful of any large hotel I’ve stayed in. They truly made my teenage daughter’s and my trip to NYC very special. The team of people working the Marriott Club were so fun & engaging! Thank you for putting smiles on our faces each morning! Five star service, quality, food, elevators!,

Review of Marriot Marquis in Times Square Me and my wife visited New York for a long weekend in mid July of this year. We are New Yorkers who now live in New Hampshire. We usually stay at the Grand Hyatt next to Grand Central. This Marriot was a change of pace for us. The property is gorgeous. There is Valet Parking and we pulled into the Hotel from 46st street. The reception desk and check-in is on the 8th floor. The use of the elevators was a bit confusing at first, but once we understood the system it turned out to be a piece of cake. In fact the elevator system was fast and convenient. Check-in was quick without any lines. The receptionist was not “Disney” friendly, but she was friendly enough. Staff was always helpful. Our room was on the 23rd floor. Its your basic room. It has a 50 inch TV, small fridge, King size bed. The toilet and shower are in the same room. The sink is outside of the shower/toilet area but separated by a wall and closet from the sleeping area. We have a 6 draw dresser, desk, closet, and couch. The room is well lit. There is a full size total body mirror in the room. Plenty of outlets. There is wireless internet. The shower is great. There is an overhead shower head, but also a hand-held shower head. Water pressure is good. The room was clean. We faced 45th street. Unfortunately, the outside of the windows were dirty. Really dirty. So whatever view we had was obscured by dirty windows. The temperature control was excellent. The King size bed was comfortable (it was firm). We did not like the pillows. They were too thick for sleeping. They were closer to sausage shape than rectangle but the width of the sausage, even with 2 pillows was not high enough to comfortably watch TV in Bed. Despite being in Times Square, our room was quiet. Due to Covid, all of the hotel restaurants were closed. Room service was available. There is a gift/food store on premises. They carry bottled beverages, coffee of various types, prepackaged sandwiches and the like, and breakfast items. SOOOO, this is NEW YORK CITY, ALL YOUR RESTAURANTS are closed. And there are NO SODA/FOOD machines in the hotel. Why would you close your store at 7 PM? Yes 7 PM!. We came back from site seeing and dinner at 8:30 PM and wanted to pick up a couple of bottles of seltzers for the room. As the hotel store is closed, we had to find a convenience/food store in the area. I know what you’re thinking. Its Timed Square, the center of the universe, there must be a dozen stores nearby. Well maybe there is, but there is no way to find one unless you walk around for a while. (remember we don’t live here). We did find one on 46st street between 7th and 6th Ave. On our last night we overheard the security desk telling someone that you can get bottled water from the front desk. This was not told to us when we checked in. The coffee. I always like to comment on the coffee. It appears that the hotel store serves typical Starbuck coffee. I find Starbuck’s product to be “bitter”. You would think that a hotel with $300 plus rooms could afford to get a better coffee. At least have a light roast available. I stopped in to look at their health club (exercise room). It is spectacular. It is as good as any expensive private health club. It was kind of neat to go outside and be right on Times Square, but after a while it became a hassle (i.e. wall to wall people at night). As there are no Broadway shows currently playing, the hotel location was a waste. From the hotel we walked to the Hi-line, Grand Central, The Village (Greenwich), Central Park, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These are long walks. There are plenty of restaurants around. Street food is ubiquitous. Over all the hotel provided a good experience. Not sure it was worth the money, but then again we were on Times Square.

I've been a fairly regular visitor to the Marquis--every year or two for about the last decade. Mostly, that's because I'm visiting with kids and you just can't beat the location if you want to impress some little ones with the big city. Also, the standard rooms are some of the most spacious in New York, and I've generally been able to get reasonable rates. Now, Times Square wouldn't necessarily be my first choice at this point in my life as an adult, but if this is your first time or you've got kids, then go for it. My most recent pre-COVID stay was a good one. The hotel at that time was in the process of being renovated, and we had a high floor room with a fresh renovation that really did make a big difference. This time, the whole hotel had been completed, and I still give high marks the room itself. It's well designed, still has plenty of room, and the furniture and bathrooms got much needed updates. The lobby level on 8 was now renovated as well, in a slightly disorienting way for frequent visitors, as the check in area has changed, and the convenience store is now where check in was. I wasn't overly enamored with the new look on that level. Didn't really fit since the flooring was the same. What disappointed me this stay was the overall service. The front desk was fine, and the clerk was able to get us a room with a partial TS view that turned out to provide some visual entertainment for the kids. However, the room itself had lots of dust and signs that it hadn't been particularly well cleaned, which is not what you want in these COVID times. From the get go, there were an inadequate number of towels for our party, and trying to get more proved to be like a game it was impossible to win. Calling "at your service" was useless because most of the time nobody picked up. I tried multiple times. That really isn't excusable. When someone finally did pick up once, they told us it would be taken care of, and when we returned many hours later...it wasn't. It finally took a trip to the front desk, where the team member heard the story and said "I'm sorry, but I can't say I'm surprised." and then made some calls for us to get our towels. Yeah, that's a sign there's a problem. Anyway, beyond that, the hotel isn't offering maid service. We requested it one day, and naturally didn't receive it. I asked several more times the next day and it finally happened late in the day. Better than nothing? The hotel restaurant was closed. It was always overpriced but it literally was roped up with curtains which gave the lobby area kind of a low rent expo center feel in that section. Since there was no table or bar service, the table areas were great for eating takeout, or having breakfast from the convenience store/quasi Starbucks. Which, despite the dreadfully slow service, we were thankful to have so we could get a few pastries in the morning and have a quick bite. On the plus side, the luggage hold/bell service was solid, and we didn't wait nearly as long as I feared when we did held luggage. Juniors is just across the street, which is great for all meals including breakfast. There had literally been a shooting right in the street in front of the Marquis and the Juniors just prior to our visit, so as a result NYPD were everywhere, and hotel security was strict. It felt plenty safe. Times Square itself had way more marijuana than my last visit and the ratio of sketch to normal was a little off, but that's not the hotel's fault. The elevator system was efficient, though they should adjust the programming for COVID times and just give everyone their own elevator! Clearly, the whole hotel was not in use, as the place was never very crowded. Obviously the hospitality industry is hurting, but the Marquis has to do better with service. I'd still give it another shot and hope that they get it together, mostly because the rooms have a lot going for them especially with families (given the sleeper sofa in every room). But it could be better, and should be.

3 night stay this past weekend. Perfect in all aspects. Requested early check in and were pleasantly surprised that we were offered a nice upgrade and allowed to check in at 8 am after a red eye flight. Our room was a large corner room with a sofa. Decent view, really nice comfortable king bed, and super clean. Special thanks to Kevin at the front desk for the warm and friendly welcome. Location is awesome. Close to all public transportation and some decent restaurants. The Starbucks coffee in the gift shop was excellent and very convenient. Well done Marriott!
