The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel offers a prime location that guests applaud for its accessibility to popular attractions. However, the atmosphere is often described as outdated, with noise complaints and a pressing need for renovations.
While the staff's friendliness is a highlight, service can sometimes be slow and unprofessional. Room cleanliness and maintenance receive mixed reviews, and guests have called out the subpar amenities and unexpected fees that detract from the hotel's overall value.

Stayed here with my mum and younger brother for a christmas present. After reading the reviews we were dreading it so much so we had tried to change hotels through our travel agent as we felt the pictures had been misold. We were told at check in we could upgrade to a newer room at an extra 100 dollars a night so we asked to view our room first and decided not to bother. Yes it is dated, yes wallpaper is peeling off the walls, has the bathroom seen better days absolutley! But honestly you can tell its been cleaned by the smell when you walk in and if you arent falling off your feet straight to sleep you arent doing it right. The location is ideal we slept and got showerd here that is it! Highlight of our stay was getting our tea each morning with shamu, the nicest man and credit to the hotel.

Nice central location only a stone throw away from Times Square. The rooms are very basic but was only somewhere to sleep. Upon check in our safe was not working, within 5 minutes of speaking with reception the engineer came to the room and sorted it for us. Maids came everyday and made the bed and replaced towels, although they didn’t always empty the bins and replace toilet rolls. We received a voucher for a grab and go breakfast which included 1 x drink, 1 x pastry and 1 x piece of fruit which was a great touch.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
I am an IHG employee for a small boutique hotel in an expensive coastal area that is much cleaner and has twice the amenities for half the cost. For what this hotel costs, I really expected cleaner more refreshed facilities. The sheets on the bed are pre-stained and the bathroom was not cleaned very well. Another thing I expect for that price are some more amenities in the room like a mini refrigerator for instance. I often brought back leftovers that just ended up spoiling because I didn’t have anywhere to keep them. Hotels of this caliber should at least have a mini fridge.
All that aside, teresa at the front desk had such beautiful energy and provided astonishing guest service. And our housekeeper, May, Was so anticipative and responsive to our needs and proceeded to check on us every day. Thank you, May!

A truly terrible experience for my two daughters (15 & 20) and my stay in NY.
The photos on the site are nothing like reality. The rooms are very old, small and unclean. The first room we were given, the carpeted floor was wet and sticky and we could not walk on it. The hallway to the loft was also wet and sticky. It was not steam cleaning… The bathroom was filthy and wall paper and paint were coming of the walls through the room and bathroom. I went to see reception to get moved and pay what ever it took for an upgrade and were told there was nothing until the next day but we would be upgraded and then they gave us some breakfast vouchers to make up for the inconvenience. Hmmm, the ‘breakfast vouchers’ were for a muffin and drink where you line up like cattle, get your food and sent off into the paddocks to graze, not pleasant and not what we would not call ‘breakfast’. After a terrible nights sleep in lumpy beds that creek, flat old pillows and barely working air conditioning we packed up our suitcases and put them in storage at concierge and were told we would have our upgrade when we got back. After a huge day sightseeing we arrive to receive our new keys and looked forward to a clean room and shower… the upgrade was literally being moved from level 11 to 17, same room same issues just not sticky carpet. I went back down again to reception where I was now told there were no other rooms available and nothing could be done. I was so defeated and tired I almost cried. The staff were not friendly or helpful and the service was 0/10, they lied about an upgrade or better room being provided to us and simply did not care how this affected our trip. They used the line ‘it’s a great location’ several times and yes, its location is the only thing going for it. We stayed in the room, unhappy and tried to be there as little as possible. Concierge: watch this little scam as you arrive. The guys take your bags then try to escort you outside to their mates who work for the local hop on and off bus where they try to get you to buy tickets and clearly get a cut from every guest they bring out to scam. It’s disgusting that management allow the men to do this. On top of this you are then harassed by the on and off bus sales guys every time you leave and enter the hotel. Let’s discuss the positive: location - it’s close to shops and restaurants, the ice machine was helpful as there was no fridge in the room but we found out in our second last night you can ‘request’ one and a mini fridge will be bought up and plugged in.
My recommendation would be not to stay here. You’re going to find small rooms a common in NY but small is fine if it’s clean. The hotel is undergoing renovations too which start at the break of dawn and end at night - maybe the place will improve once these are done. Until then, do yourself and your family a favor and stay elsewhere.

I recently stayed at The Manhattan at Times Square and unfortunately, it was a deeply disappointing experience. The room provided was nothing like the photos displayed on Booking.com, which felt highly misleading and deceptive. There were also significant safety concerns, as exposed electrical sockets posed risks, and no action was taken despite reporting the issue. The room itself was in very poor condition, with peeling wallpaper, stained walls, mould in the bathroom, and a leaking shower ceiling, making it clear that maintenance was lacking.
Adding to the discomfort, union protests began outside the hotel at 7:30 AM every day, disrupting any chance of peace, and I was not informed about this situation at the time of booking or check-in. Housekeeping repeatedly entered my room despite the "Do Not Disturb" sign being displayed, even while I was sleeping. On the final day, staff ignored my request to avoid cleaning, which felt like a serious breach of privacy.
Additionally, hot water was unavailable daily for several hours, which was highly inconvenient after workouts. To top it off, I was pressured to tip for luggage storage, even directed to an ATM to withdraw cash, which felt unprofessional and inappropriate. Despite raising these issues with reception multiple times, the staff failed to address or resolve them adequately. This stay fell far below the standards I expect from an IHG property, and I cannot recommend this hotel based on my experience.

There are two main reasons and 3 main people that saved this hotel from a 2 star review in my mind. This hotel was expensive and the rooms were old, dingy, run down, with peeling paint, rusty door parts and cracked countertops. The crisply made white bed was the most inviting part of our room and thankfully the beds were comfortable. We had only two bath towels in our room, no hand towels or bath mat and could not reach anyone to add more. Thankfully we took a hand towel from my son’s room to use as a bath mat. So the room itself for the price was less than desirable.
So that’s the not so good and something that can be upgraded (and we were told at check-in they were renovating the rooms). However, two things that are more precious than old dingy rooms are 1) the convenient location and 2) most importantly … The People. You cannot replace people easily. To find staff that engages with clientele in a friendly manner having to make up and work overtime to overcompensate for poor rooms is a monumental feat. It is easy to have a beautiful hotel and sub-par or mediocre staff. One might overlook that the staff was poorly trained or not very nice because the hotel itself is pleasant and rooms nicely appointed. But, my goodness … to have friendly, engaging, competent staff that makes you feel welcome and a part of a family and can help you see past the rooms that were too expensive for their quality is something to celebrate as a precious resource. The three people that saved this hotel for me are Racquel at check-in, Ninche who helped us with our stored luggage and Gene Faulk who helped us load our car. Each one of these humans were engaging, kind, made me laugh or smile, and just left me with a feeling of peace and welcome in this busy city. So, I truly hope this hotel’s management understands just how much these employees should be valued. A beautiful hotel without the kind heart of its employees is nothing compared to an average hotel with beautiful, kind people that care about their guests’ experience. And the only reason I would return to this hotel is for the people because there are many more hotels in Times Square with similar price points, but no other hotel with these three people!

Wow, I had the displeasure of experiencing two of their rooms and both were the absolute worst rooms I've ever stayed in. I travel a lot for pleasure and for business and this is the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. I've been in motels that are much nicer than this hotel.
We paid for a Standard King room but when we arrived around 7:30pm, they had no King rooms and claimed that the room with two double beds that they gave us instead was more expensive. Well, that was a complete lie and the room felt like we were in prison; not exaggerating. The entire 8th floor was gross. Everything was dirty, including the walls and floors, with doors falling apart, chipped, and broken. The beds were lopsided and you could feel the springs, the walls were dirty and patched up in the worst way possible, and it was just disgusting. The furniture was falling apart and had piled up dust. The sink was backed up, and the bathroom was just as bad as the room. They didn't even provide hand towels for the bathroom, you just get shower towels. How was I supposed to dry my hands? With my shower towel?
The next morning we requested the Standard King room that we were supposed to be given and that was just as bad. The entire 9th floor was just as bad as the 8th floor. The furniture in the room was old and falling apart, the wall paper appears to have never been changed and it's coming off the wall and is dirty. There's tons of water damage in the bathroom and the bathtub was backed up. There's rust everywhere with the door handle to the room completely rusted. The deadbolt to the door was also broken, it just spins around! They can't even replace an outlet, instead running an extension cord across the floor to another outlet for the TV. The bed was just as uncomfortable, to the point where I woke up every morning with back pain. The beds in both room were horrible.
Save your money and go elsewhere. The pictures for the Standard rooms on these booking websites make them look like a room that's older but clean but they're actually disgusting. Even if you pay more for a "premium" room which are the remodeled rooms, I'm guessing on the upper floors, they don't sound so great. I heard from people in the elevator that they aren't that much better with people complaining of plumbing issues and hot water issues.
This hotel needs to be gutted and fully repaired. The rooms I was in appear to have never been remodeled since the hotel was built in 1962. It looks like they could care less about these rooms and I feel majorly ripped off. The only thing they have going for them is their location. Take a look at some of the pics I took...there was a lot more damage and dirt than what I captured. I also saw that they claim these rooms are soundproof but you can completely hear the other room due to an adjoining door. My wife and I were shocked that they're selling these rooms, they're that bad.

We traveled as a group to NYC for the weekend to see Wicked. Upon our arrival, we stood in line for at least an hour to check in. There were two people working the desk, and there were five computers. We had another group member check in several hours later, and it took the same amount of time. I do not know why it takes so long to get checked in, but that in itself set the tone of our trip and this hotel stay.
We had three rooms for the weekend: the first room didn't have a closet, or at least one that was accessible, didn't have a thermostat to adjust the heat, one of the prongs for the plug fell out and the light flicks on and off, there are very limited electrical outlets, the shampoo and body wash dispensers were empty, and when one of our group members were taking a shower, the shampoo dispenser fell off the wall. The door also had a gouge in it from the security lock. Also, the TV didn't work. We didn't get a washcloth, even after requesting one, and there were only four towels for four people. Our room needed an iron.
In our second room, the beds are so warped that it feels like being a taco filling. Our second room also had no heat, and in February in 2024, heat is essential.
Our third room had no heat or washcloths, and the shampoo was watered down. The iron didn't work and had to be borrowed from another room. There is also a need for electrical outlets.
The ice machine does not have any ice, and has not had any ice for our entire stay. Despite having a card reader, the soda machine does not actually take cards. It is cash only. When we got a soda out of the machine, it expired by 3 years. When you call the front desk for assistance, no one answers the phone despite calling four times.
On a positive note, the doorman are very polite and respectful and the check in staff are pleasant and do a good job. They are also not pushy to buy things at their store. The doorman was able to get us two cabs for a large group in a short period of time. Their staff is excellent.

Amber, it's regrettable that your recent visit had a number of challenges. Your lengthy check-in experience and perceived inconsistencies with your rooms are certainly not typical of the standards we aim to provide. Our team members work hard to facilitate a smooth arrival and comfortable amenities. Your comments on outlet availability and the ice machine are also taken seriously. They offer valuable insight for improving our service standard. We genuinely thank you for appreciating the courtesy and professionalism of our doormen and team members at the front desk. We're thankful they were able to deliver a level of service you appreciated. We hope you'll consider us again in the future. We're confident we can provide a better experience that aligns more closely with our typical high standards. Brendan Moraes Managing Director

The taps in the bathroom leaked like crazy when turned on. The lamp on the desk was broken and the bulb on one side did not work. The other side was hanging down out of the socket. The air did not work very well. The headboard was not even attached to the wall or the bed, it just kinda flopped around. We had no towels the one day and when I asked the lady cleaning the room across from us she said she didn’t have any at all, that we could try and get them by calling down, but they rarely answer the phone when you do call. We did end up getting towels a couple hours later.
Let’s talk about cleanliness. If I could give it negative stars for this I would. Here is a pic of behind the a/c unit.
They also don’t do anything about the locals loitering out front harassing and chasing you down to buy tickets for the bus tours or handbags. Everytime we left the hotel we were bombarded
We were in room 1218 which happens to be right behind the elevators and that’s all you get to listen to.

R4321EIgaryl, It is disheartening to hear about your recent experience. Although pleased the location was a positive aspect for you, it is concerning that the room conditions and cleanliness did not meet your expectations. The mentioned issues with the bathroom, desk lamp, and headboard are certainly not reflective of the standards the team strives to maintain. Additionally, the inconvenience of obtaining towels was noted, as was the situation with local vendors outside the premises. The noise from the elevators and the surroundings also clearly impacted your stay. Your feedback is valuable, and the team will review and address your concerns to improve our services and guest experience. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. One of the reasons I chose to stay at this hotel is because of its location (IHG membership helps too). In that aspect, the hotel did not disappoint. Many of the sites are within walking distance and it's easy to get around being on a subway line. The location works for first time visitors to the city. Another plus point for the hotel is the staff. Most of them are friendly and helpful. But that's about it. The rest of the hotel needs some serious updates, especially the elevator system. It was incredibly old and function is a weird way. The room I stayed in has been renovated but there are many things that are not working, such as the air-conditioning and light fixtures. The room is clean and so is the bathroom. But there are no standard amenities that you would expect of an IHG hotel. The furnishings in the room are also odd pieces that do not meet what I would expect of an IHG hotel either. The good thing is that I only stayed for one night.

Hi we stayed here January 2024 and paid facility fees & taxes and was told we would receive 50% back within 14 - we paid the fees on check in and when we got home and i chased and chased the refund they said they didnt know what i was talking about and eventually just ignored me it made my life a misery! I would not recommend staying here as they do not refund the 50% - well they did not to us anyway.
