The 2 bedroom/loft condo was comfortable and accommodated 6 adults with room to spare. It was also well equipped. If there was any complaint it would be that the view was somewhat limited. Other than that this is a great choice.

We didn't actually stay here but had a reservation and had to cancel at the last minute due to a family emergency. We had a several hundred dollar non-refundable deposit and the management there gave us a full refund even though they absolutely didn't need to. I can't comment on the property but I'd recommend it based on that experience alone.

We traveled to Mammoth two weeks ago with 2 other couples and had plenty of room. Just down the hill from Canyon Lodge, this unit offers a shuttle service to the slopes as well as a ski locker at the lodge. It is also situated just above the Mammoth Village and is a short walk to restaurants and shops. Underground parking makes it easy to unload in any kind of weather. The fully equipped redesigned kitchen made it very easy to cook our gourmet meals. Comfortable beds and plenty of private space for each couple. Highly recommended! Can't wait to go back!

My family searched on the internet for lodgings at Mammoth and came across the web page for Mountainback. After viewing their available units, we contacted Mountainback to confirm their location and to inquire about making reservations. We were told that all reservations needed to be handled online through their reservation service. So, we went back online and made our reservation. Subsequently, we received a call from the management company indicating that the rate that our reservation was booked at was not correct and that we would have to pay an additional $1100.00 for the reservation. After contacting the company, they refused to honor our reservation at the confirmed price.
This company is one of the most unethical I have ever dealt with and we are currently filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau, Mammoth Visitors Bureau and the Federal Trade Commissiion.

Christmas reservations have never been accepted online due to the complexity of our rate structure during this busy holiday period. Our web site clearly stated in 14pt red type that units may be viewed online, but reservations during the dates of December 15 and January 5 will not calculate correctly and reservations must be made by phone. This has been our policy since the online system was first established. We apologize if there was any misunderstanding, our rates are clearly posted on the web site and competetive with similar properties in Mammoth.

We had the unfortunate luck to find this one of the only condominiums available for rent over the recent Christmas Holiday. Unlike many of our other stays at condos in Mammoth, this one was horrible! This place is old, out-dated, unsafe, and in a terrible state of disrepair. The management company was unwilling to fix problems when reported, and only tried to fix them after repeated calls. (Imagine a condo in the mountains during winter with limited heat!) Don't waste your time here. There are much, much better places to rent. I would never, ever stay here again, or recommend it to anyone. Beware!

We are sorry if this guest did not recieve the services expected during their stay. However, condominiums at Mountainback can be rented from at least 7 different agencies. Placing blame on Mountainback as a whole is unfair. We represent Mammoth Mountain Reservations (under new ownership as of 5/1/03), the onsite management company which handles rentals for about 1/2 the units at Mountainack. This guest should be more specific as to which company his problems were with. Mountainback continues to be one of Mammoth's finest properties and we hope the comments of one guest will not deter you from staying with us. I you have any questions, please call me at 760-934-5000.

My family has been renting from Mountainback for 20+ years. This year, a personal guest of the owner from the unit next to ours took one of our blankets that was in the hall, along with other items, by our door. All Mountain Back would do was email the owner, they claim they don't have a phone number for the owner. I was able to find a number online in 2 minutes. The owner admits to having the item. Mountainback refuses to follow up and will not help. When I told Marylou from Mountainback I was disappointed in their follow up she said, "Well you can feel that way." Do not stay here, they do not care about their guests!!!!

There appears to be a misunderstanding here. Our office told this guest that we did not have the phone number of the owners GUEST, which is accurate. We do no keep records on who a unit owner allows to use their unit. Our office contacted the unit owner who gave us the guests email address which we passed along to our guest, Mary J. Our office also contacted the owner's guest and were told that the blanket had been mailed back to Mountainback to be given back to our guest before they departed. Upon follow-up by our office with the owners guest when the blanket did not arrive, we found that the owners guest had mailed the blanket via the US Post Office to our physical address. Mammoth Lakes does not have mail delivery, only PO Box pick up so the package was returned as undeliverable. We continue to work with the owners guest to have the blanket returned.

I love the staff. Marilou is awesome and love her dog Winston. We rented unit 103 for 4 nights and loved it. The unit is quite dated, the master bed is hard as a rock, could use a few nice cooking pans and a few of the windows didn't open. But, overall, we loved our visit. This is our second stay at Mountain Back and we will be back again.

We went up and stayed at Mountainback Condos #9 for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and it was absolutely perfect! The condo is very large and slept not only our family of 4, but we also had a couple aunts and uncles stay with us too because there was extra room. The upstairs loft area has its own bathroom and was perfect for our daughters to have their own space and hang out area to play. The hall closet was completely stocked with great board games and we really just hung around the fire as a family and played games and watched the beautiful scenery. A great place to stay and the owners really take care of the condo so nothing is old or junky. Planning to make this a annual tradition for sure!

We rented unit 47 from 2/23/12 through 2/25/12. We arrived late afternoon and didn't realize we had no hot water until the property management office was closed. They had failed to turn on the hot water heater for our condo and we couldn't get a hold of anyone until the office opened back up at 9am on the following morning. After I went to the office at 9am I was told they would send up a guy to turn it on when he came in at 9:30. So much for a hot shower before our scheduled meetings that day. The person in the office showed no remorse for their failure and when I told them I would find a way to contact the owner of our unit 47, she said "go ahead, please tell them." I said, "I cant believe you just said that" and she replied, "go ahead and tell them" once again. Horrible attitude as it's not like I'm staying at a motel 6 for $49 a night, we are paying $250 a night and expect better customer service and a reasonable attitude.
Then we open up a cabinet and find a container of stale croissants dated 10/11. This was especially appetizing when we were getting ready to eat.
Our complaint is not with the owner of unit 47 but with the horrible property management. I'm sure the owner has no idea about the way the management mistreats their customers and that's a crime since they pay them 40% of the rental amount.
We will NEVER stay at Mountainback condos again!!!!

Response from Jeff D, Manager at Mountainback at Mammoth
Responded Mar 7, 2012
We are very sorry for any inconvenience this guest may have experienced. Mountainback staff is onsite and on call 24/7/365 for emergency assistance. We repaired the problem within about one half hour after being notified that the water heater was not working. The breaker had popped and needed to be reset. We understand that things like this can set visitors off on a bad start to their vacation, but we cannot foresee every possible problem than can occur with a vacation rental. We can only fix the problem as soon as we are notified. In this case we could have fixed the problem the night before if we knew about it. If you read the rest of our reviews you will see that Mountainback is still the place to stay.

Large complex off Lake Mary Rd (convenient): 10+ buildings of 12 units each of varying interior qualities and sizes. Good sizes, sleeping up to 12 in some larger units. Parking is below the units, at grade, with the smaller units one floor up and the larger 2-story units on the top floor. So the entrance to the top floor units is actually the 3rd floor, and those units have an interior loft or second story (4th floor). It's a lot of stairs, and can be a challenge in the high altitude.

You get two parking spaces; street parking is limited, and restricted at night. They give you one overflow parking spot as well, but that's in a dirt lot. The office and main pool (small) and jacuzzi are centrally located; additional smaller hot tubs are located between the buildings. Service is friendly, helpful and efficient.

Units are a bit dated, but many have been upgraded so check out the website for the best options. Prices are VERY reasonable considering the unit sizes. There is no additional cleaning deposit or fee (great deal!) and daily towel service is included. Cable TV and internet are included and reliable.

With a location halfway between the lakes and downtown, it's convenient and easily accessible off a major road. If it weren't for the stairs, it'd be perfect, and even dealing with the stairs it's a good option for summer travel in Mammoth.
