Hotel's Favourite
This is the perfect location for a quiet getaway in an adults-only setting. Located on beautiful Jones Street, The Eliza Thompson Inn gives you the feeling of stepping back in time from the furnishings to the hospitality which the South is so well known for. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Jen and Josh who were so warm, welcoming and very helpful.
Our room, the R. Bruce located in the Main House, overlooks beautiful Jones Street. The furnishings were gorgeous, and the bed so very comfortable. Shavatica did such a wonderful job ensuring that everything was clean and in place upon our return each evening.
The day started with a delicious brunch in the courtyard at a time of our choosing. Two options are given for the main course (frittata, quiche, waffles with jam and others) plus sides of biscuits and gravy, toast, fruit and so on plus juices, coffee or tea. Everything was always so delicious, fresh and cooked perfectly. The wait staff also went above and beyond to ensure that everything was to our liking. (There is an additional charge for brunch, but it is well worth the cost and convenience in a beautiful, peaceful setting.) Complimentary and quite delicious light hors d'oeuvres and wine are served in the parlor each evening at 5 p.m. Then, a complimentary and very scrumptious dessert and port is served at 8 p.m. each evening. (Coffee, soft drinks and bottled water are still offered and available at any time - day or night.)
If walking is an issue, a hop-on, hop-off trolley is available within a block or so, or one of the staff will be more than happy to call for a trolley shuttle to pick you up and deliver you to the welcome center. However, once your ticket is purchased, you are able to begin your trolley ride at any of the fifteen or more stops. Popular restaurants, shops, Forsyth Park and so much else are also within walking distance.
We suggest taking an Uber from the airport as we rented a car for the week and never used it until the day before our departure (as the trolley provided everything we needed up to that time) when we visited Wormsloe and Tybee Island. Uber services were great and timely. Plus, parking costs add up.
Somewhere it states, “live like a local”, and that is truly how we felt. We will definitely go back!

We stayed at this beautifully maintained historic inn in the middle of July. This was our 5th stay & would rate it the best stay we've had at the inn. Everyone working at the inn was very accommodating, friendly & went out of their way to make sure your stay was going well while adhering to guidelines to make you feel safe during your stay.
Due to covid-19, they replaced the buffet breakfast with a breakfast you order off a menu offering a couple of options and several sides the day before. All you have to do is circle the options & give a time you'd be dining. The breakfast would be brought to you once seated at a table in their lovely courtyard. Our favorite was the praline french toast but all the breakfasts were tasty & plentiful.
We stayed in the Bruce Room. It is very spacious & furnished nicely. The bathroom is on the small side but that's to be expected in an historic inn. There are plenty of room options in the inn or you can opt for a garden room in the back courtyard area.
The inn hosts a complimentary happy hour every evening in a lovely, spacious sitting room, which runs for an hour & a half, offering a selection of wine, cheese & hors d'oeuvres. You may want to keep that in mind when making dinner reservations.
The inn is located on one of the prettiest blocks in the historic district, within a 5 minute walk to Forsyth park. There's on street parking directly in front of the inn at a reasonable charge.
The inn has become our go to place to stay at while visiting Savannah.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
The House is beautiful and we booked our first trip to Savannah here for the history of the inn and the amenities such as wine reception, dessert hour and breakfast. We didn't partake in the wine hour the first night as we had ordered a bottle to the room with a cheese platter (I didn't think that through as we arrived at 4pm and should've held off for an hour) The staff had it beautifully set up upon arrival with a personal note card congratulating us. We thought that was special.
The Dessert we didn't have a chance to enjoy either as we went exploring as soon as we arrived and the following day/evening. (Not the fault of the ETH).
Breakfast was convenient, however not very impressive. My husband had a very watery breakfast quiche the first morning and for a southern location the grits were tasteless. The second morning we opted for coffee and toast as we were doing a brunch cruise on the river.
The room 118 (and I am assuming the adjacent on the other side of the service door) Courtyard Kings
were extremely noisy and lacked basic privacy. The staff was working as early as 7 to get ready for breakfast so the metal door between the two rooms would bang closed over and over. Once breakfast was in full swing you had guests right outside your window in the courtyard and had to keep your curtains shut for privacy. Also the parlor where wine social takes place, looks directly through the courtyard to the doors to that room so even in the early evening we had to close the curtains.
The staff was all very friendly until I went to check out and the woman there told me I'm all set. That my card was charged. Without even going over the bill with me.Took my keys and didn't even ask if we needed bellhop for luggage. We went ahead and took it ourselves through the courtyard gate to our car at 11:00. Perhaps because we booked through booking.com? Maybe it's considered a slight to the ETH.
Parking was a luck of the draw and we won upon arrival. There was a spot right outside and only had to pay for 1 hour as parking in the city is free from 5pm Friday -Sunday.
All in all our trip to Savannah was beautiful and we enjoyed ourselves with the exception of a few minor inconveniences. When we go back we will definitely look into an AirBnB or boutique hotel as I can not justify the price we paid.

Good Morning Ms. darlav1973, thank you so much for writing a very detailed review, it was very helpful and a little concerning. I have to make a personal apolgy for your check out, as I am the one who checked you out. It was not a slight because of your booking, I promise. There is no explanation that I can offer, but with the COVID procedures I have become lax in my customer service skills. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, since our check out has become so streamlined, such as, final bill is emailed, and no one seems to want paper copies anymore all I need is the keys when a guest checks out. It doesn't matter, you are right, I should still ask, and I will. Didn't realize how important it was until reading your review. We would love to see you again, and thank you again, I mean it. Nell, Guest Services

The place is absolutely adorable & staff is really friendly. I think the bedding could use an update & cleaning people could do a better job as there were still hairs from someone previous around the sink. People complain about the ac units in the rooms but it’s an old house what do you expect we loved it because it kept to room at the temp we wanted & kept us from hearing any outside noise. The breakfast was great! I wish they would have stayed consistent with having eggs with breakfast because not everyone enjoys casserole.

Inn is understaffed, and the staff are stressed but trying their best to cope. Covid precautions minimal. Appreciated the plastic barrier of front desk persons and box of masks. Concerned because one staff was not wearing mask at first, hallways are tight, and he was serving everyone himself. Guests packed into the parlor during cocktail hour, no masks, no social distancing, so we took cocktails in room. Need to restructure this, maybe time slots permitting smaller numbers, staff could offer masks to those coming into place and parlor. The ambience overall was tense. Everything was served to guests, very small portions (except generous wine, thanks), so seemed that staff are trained to be very frugal, maybe a bit too much so, although hors d'oevres were satisfactory. Breakfast must be ordered night before and was to be served at a particular time. Ours was always at least a half hour late due to understaffed, and the poor man was running from pillar to post, so you feel bad about asking for coffee refills. Average breakfast, nothing special. Options emphasize high calorie, high carb (pancakes, French toast) or a high carb egg casserole option; "country sausage" is cheap thin patties, bacon undercooked. you can order eggs, which is good, omelette better. Pillows were old and not down or similar comfortable product. Amenities were average at best, unknown producer, nothing special

This was my first solo trip, so I was a little nervous about it, but excited as well. As soon as i parked in front of the Eliza Thompson House, I was greeted by a staff member (David, I believe) who helped me with parking information and took my luggage to my room. After entering I met Del, the house manager, who handed my my choice of wine and helped me get checked in. The house was very beautiful, and the courtyard even more so. My room was on the third floor overlooking the courtyard and fountain. The room was immaculate, there was a bottle of wine on the bed, chocolates, and even earplugs for light sleepers (although I found the location to be very quiet). The bathroom was clean and stocked with quality toiletries and soft thick towels. The breakfast was delicious and the servers very attentive.
The location is Jones St., so I was able to walk everywhere, from the City Market to River St and back up to Forsyth Park with no problem.
This getaway was just what I needed as a solo traveler looking for some pampering. I can't wait until I have the opportunity to go back.

Our family spent a wonderful 3 days at this charming, elegant bed and breakfast recently. The staff were welcoming, charming and helpful with booking tours of historic Savannah, suggestions for dining and excursions to Tybee Island.
The full breakfast, hôrs devours/wine hours and evening coffee/dessert time is presented with gracious hospitality. Everything was deliciously prepared.
Our concerns about safety during COVID were eased by the requirement of wearing masks in all public areas of the inn. Hand sanitizer stations and masks were available for any guest arriving without personal PPE. Social distancing amongst guests and food service safety precautions made for a relaxed stay.
If you are looking for charm, history, beautiful accommodations and Southern hospitality plan your stay in Savannah, GA at The Eliza Thompson House. You will return year after year.

My wife and I enjoyed our 3 night stay at Eliza Thompson House. The service was excellent from arrival to departure. Guests are treated to home-cooked breakfasts and tasty treats with wine at cocktail hour. We returned from daily activities to find our room fresh and clean. The location within the historic district is exceptional, an easy walk to all major sights, yet very quiet. Our room, like the public areas of the Inn, was comfortable but not fancy. When we return to Savannah, we will stay here.

Really beautiful historic inn located right in the historic district but farther away from the night life spots so it was nice and quiet at night. The breakfast, wine, and food were well worth the extra price and generally tasty. They give you plenty so you may not need dinner! We were a group of three so there were some issues making sure there were enough towels or breakfast cards for everyone, but otherwise the staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations for places to go. If you're looking for a historic hotel or a more relaxed atmosphere this is a great option!

This is a lovely place to stay in Savannah. You are in the historic part of town and everything is walkable. The rooms open on to a courtyard with a fountain and so there is very little noise. The staff is friendly and competent. The food is incredible. Why wouldn't you stay here?
