The Thunderbird Inn captivates guests with its nostalgic '60s vibe and modern amenities, with many visitors applauding its central location near downtown attractions. While the hotel's cleanliness and the friendly staff earn rave reviews, some guests have called out issues with noise and room maintenance. The complimentary retro treats like donuts and moon pies are a hit, but reviewers warn of additional parking fees and varied opinions on the overall value.

If you’re looking for a fairly inexpensive place to stay very close to downtown Savannah, this is it. It’s a quirky retro styled Roadside in on a major highway. The location is very convenient and within walking distance of major attractions and the trolley station if you want to book a tour. I booked the hotel online through a travel site and was able to get my room for a very inexpensive rate. Free breakfast consists of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, your choice of apple or orange juice, and fresh brewed coffee. The donuts are fresh and very tasty! The room was definitely sanitized because it smelled of heavy bleach when I arrived. However the bed linens were not clean and there was a great amount of hair and dirt between the mattress and the headboard. Staff was very friendly and accommodating, took care of the issue immediately. The hotel is located on a very busy intersection and there is a ton of street noise. The walls are paper thin. Homeless people hang out across the street all night long. The hotel charges $15 per night to park your car there in addition to your room fee. Overall my experience was positive, I would definitely stay here again if I can get the same great room deal. I love the retro chic decor and convenience to historic Savannah. I do not suggest walking the streets of Savannah after dark… call Lyft or Uber which are plentiful and inexpensive.

Pros: A fun place to stay. My daughter (14) and I were in Savannah for 2 nights during a stop on a roadtrip through 6 states and the Thunderbird is the perfect location within walking distance to the historic district, SCAD as well as the welcome center for two popular tour companies. The parking fee is $15 per night but I didn't mind the charge as you literally don't have to drive your car anywhere. There is music playing for the better part of the day, there is free lemonade and popcorn 24/7 along with complimentary Krispy Kreme donuts of different varieties for a few hours each morning.
Cons: This is NOT a quiet motel so if you are a light sleeper you might want to book elsewhere or make certain you bring good earplugs! Even after the music goes off you will hear the traffic and the bus station announcements (station is across the street) as well as other guests walking by who have no regard for how loud they are being as this is a drive-up motel. This is also a pet friendly motel so be prepared for the chance of barking. Our last night, the dog next door literally barked, cried and scratched for HOURS after it's owner left him behind for the night. I was exhausted traveling to my next destination. Also, the heating/AC unit in the room was filthy...when we turned it on dirt and dust actually flew out. I probably wouldn't have noticed but I woke up the first morning of our stay with a major sinus headache and then noticed how gross it was.
All in all....id stay again definitely (but I'd clean the heating/ac unit myself).

We stayed three nights at the Thunderbird Inn with our dog. The staff was super friendly and helpful. There was a good variety of Krispy Kreme donuts and coffee, hot tea, flavored syrups, OJ and apple juice in the morning. Room is a little small but comfortable and very clean. The bed was very comfortable. Water pressure is a little lacking. The room does stay fairly bright at night and there is a lot of traffic noise. This may not be a problem for some people like my husband, but I brought ear plugs and an eye mask. The location is just on the outskirts of the historic district so many things are within walking distance if the weather is nice or a quick car ride. Yes, there is a parking fee but it was well disclosed in advance and you have to pay to park almost everywhere in Savannah so it was expected. It's nice to be able to park right outside your door. It was a good, affordable option and we would stay again.

We needed a room en route to Florida and chose the Thunderbird based on price, location and claims of extreme cleanliness. I felt like I was staying in a different hotel. It was filthy. The bathroom door was literally missing pieces (from a dog scratching perhaps?), the beds dust ruffles had stains all over them, the floor baseboards had a a considerable build up of dust, floors hadn't been moped, mold on the shower liner (no curtain hung) and hair on the walls of the shower that didn't belong to me or my party. We were in room 103 which sounded like it was right on the road. It's a no for me . . . Drive up the road and find something else.

When we opened the door to our room, you could smell the bleach. That was a good start. We liked the simple, retro/modern decor. We especially liked that there was no carpeting. Everything in the room can be easily sanitized from the floor to the headboard to the cabinetry and the chairs. The spa items were great. No little tiny bottles but full size bottles already afixed to the shower. It's about a 2 block walk to the City Market area and parking at $15 per night is reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. My only two suggestions would be to have clocks in the room and maybe some fruit or something a little healthier as an option for breakfast, however, I did enjoy my huge Krispy Kreme donut with lots of frosting! It's not like I eat like that every day so what the heck. The man we dealt with at check out was so pleasant and cheerful. We will definitely return as Savannah is one of our favorite cities.

My dog sasha and I stayed a few nights at the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was not my initial top choice but the extended stay in Savannah does not allow pitbulls so I was very happy when I called the thunderbird and they said there are no breed restrictions. Upon arrival check-in was quick and easy they handed me a homemade dog bone for sasha and I little keychain for her. Thare are some additional fees however. There is a $50 dog deposit which their website mentions, however, though there is parking onsite there is a $15 per night parking charge which I did not see mentioned anywhere online. They also make you sign a waiver for your dog, dog can't go on the furniture, you can't leave dog in the room unattended, if your dog makes excessive noise you could be kicked out. They didn't ask for any proof of vaccines or rabies shots like most places do when I bring sasha, but I was prepared just in case. Once we got to the room it was just a standard king bef room, the bathroom was very tiny, couldn't close the door because the toilet was right there. Bedding was clean, however, sasha is one of those dogs who gets more water on the floor than she does in her mouth when she's drinking water so I grabbed one of the white face towels to sop it up. Bad idea, the towel was no longer white but a dirty brown. I used one of sasha's to-go car towels after that. There was also a strangely musty smell upon first entering the room each time but I didn't notice the smell after a few mintues. The thunderbird inn in on a fairly busy road and it's a motel. You could hear all the cars driving past at night and hear everyone walking by your room, the walls between the rooms were thin as well as I could hear stuff I did not want to. There is only a coffee maker and fridge in the room no microwave. I drink tea so I just needed the hot water from the coffee maker, when opening the top I noticed it was a little dirty so I put the water in it and it came out with specks, i did this 5 more times and it still had specks so I just didnt use it. The tv works but the remote does not so if you want to change the volume or channel you have to press and hold the single button on the tv. There was also no tv channel guide so I needed up going through each channel and writing down what each was. Overall staff was friendly, room cleanliness was not up to my standards, location was great, we walked everywhere.

We enjoyed our stay at this dog-friendly hip motel. (Pet fee $50) Comfy beds, clean room and branded shampoo/conditioner dispensers. It was fun for our 14 year old daughter to experience a retro motel feel, rather than a boring standard hotel room.

A couple of friends got together to visit Savannah and decided to stay at the Retro Thunderbird Inn in Savannah GA. We were pleasantly surprised. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival. Such a cute motel. We even rebooked for our return trip. Brightly colored, comfy beds, super clean & well stocked. We couldn't even pass up the freshly popped popcorn in the evening. The RC cola was just right with the MoonPies as our "mint" on our beds. Totally Cute! The ac/heater worked perfectly too. They offer coffee in the rooms & full sized refillable pumps (shampoo/conditioner, shower gel & body lotion). They have recycling too. Also you can purchase retro souvenirs along with other Beverages and snacks in the lobby and for breakfast they offer complimentary HUGE glazed donuts, refillable coffee w specialty syrups and orange/apple juice too. Get there early for limited number of on-site parking spots ($15 extra) It is a non smoking hotel too :)

We loved our stay at the Thunderbird Inn! It's easy to find from the Interstate, and it was a short walk to City Market and other historic sites. They were very welcoming of our dog, and provided us with a big dog bed and food & water dishes. Our dog loved his welcome treat and the engraved dog tag was a cute touch! We loved that there was a fenced dog area where they can do their business off-leash. The room was clean and had everything we needed for a weekend away from home. The Krispy Kreme donuts every morning were great to grab on the go as we walked our dog toward any of the city's beautiful squares and coffee shops with outdoor seating. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful, and gave us a long list of places we could go with our dog in tow. We will definitely stay here again! You can't beat the price for a hotel so close to all of the fun the historic district has to offer. The rooms do have exterior door access, which I usually don't care for, but the property is very well lit. There was someone on staff at the front desk at all times, and they can see the entire property from inside the lobby. We didn't feel unsafe at all, even when taking our dog out for a potty break at night. I would not recommend walking back from Bay Street via Fahm street after dark. It was a little sketchy when we drove that route, so i wouldn't want to walk that way personally. Take Oglethorpe across MLK and use Montgomery or Jefferson St to get to the City Market area. It was well lit and didn't feel unsafe at all.

I have been interested in staying here for a while. It met and exceeded my expectations. The staff was very accommodating with making sure the needs for some in our party were met. Leslie and A'keema checked us in and were very helpful with questions we had. We also got to take George Monk, their sock monkey mascot, around town for pictures with us.
The rooms were very clean and decorated nicely. There were two Moon Pies and RC Colas on our pillows when we entered. We stayed in the king suite and it had a lot of room.
The hotel is in a great location. It is within walking distance of much of Savannah. There is a $15 parking fee, but it is less expensive than other area hotels and they let us keep our cars there while we finshed sightseeing.
Gracie was the person who checked us out and she was just as helpful as the folks who checked us in. There were Krispie Kreme donuts and the best coffee I have had in a long time.
I highly recommend the Thunderbird Inn for a fun stay in Savannah.

They have a small parking lot. So you have to pay to park there, if you do not pay you have to find a parking space out on the street. I cannot remember exactly how much it was but I did not think it was overly expensive. We paid. It is a easy three block walk to the downtown riverfront area. Where there's lots of shops and restaurants and a beautiful walk along the river.
