We've stayed and reviewed here before. This trip the hotel was looking more dated and in need of a makeover. However the room was clean and we did have a balcony which was nice. The location is awesome here. Walk out the front door to everything. The breakfast is a real breakfast not just fruit and bagels.

The lobby area was ok, breakfast was ok. Our room, HORRIBLE!!! Mold growing in tub and ac vent, tile in bathroom was nasty, stains on walls, part of the ceiling had some type damage. There was a smell in the hallway similar to sewage. Never again!!

We visited for a quick getaway, wanting some mountain air and a chance to rest a little. I could talk a lot about how Gatlinburg was probably the wrong choice for that...but I will limit myself to talking about the hotel and I've thought quite a bit about what to say here.

First, the positives. This is an excellent location. Right on the main road, walking distance to most everything on offer-restaurants, shops, activities for the family. Parking was free (if I'm remembering correctly) and plentiful. The bed was very comfortable. Hurricane Michael forced us to leave a day early, and the front desk staff was so understanding and even refunded us our unused night. Our room was clean, and refreshed the next day. The staff we encountered was friendly and helpful.

Now, the drawbacks. I'm sure it must be difficult to plan to renovate/update a high-volume hotel such as this one, but I do feel that an update is in order. Carpet, wallpaper, couches, and tiles, while clean, do need to be replaced. Linens and towels were fine. TVs, although on the smaller side, worked well, as did our wi-fi. Kitchenette area was fine. The small balcony area had plastic chairs, but was a nice way to sit and people-watch. The smell of the cleaning solutions may have bothered some, but didn't bother us.

My husband used the jetted tub and enjoyed it. We didn't use the pool, nor did we eat the breakfast they offered, so I can't speak to those things. Street level noise might be a problem for some.

To close, a major renovation would do this place good. Money well spent in this high-volume hotel would yield a great return in the long run. I hope it happens for this place soon, as the location can't be beat. Would definitely consider staying again, even with the above drawbacks noted.
P.S. Go eat next door at Calhouns! Do it (but go early, because it is hella busy)!

My wife and I recently spent our 31st anniversary In Gatlinburg and stayed at the Black Bear Inn. My wife is disabled and requires a power chair ( a permobil f3). When I made our reservation, I specifically asked if their rooms were wheelchair accessible. I was informed that the room we reserved would accommodate her wheelchair and there should be no problems. Upon arrival, Sebastion checked us in and was very pleasant. We were assigned room 415. upon entering the room, it was immediately obvious that my wife's chair was not going to fit into the bathroom. She could get into the doorway but that was as far as she could go. She could not turn to the sink or the toilet. I called the front desk and explained the situation. Sebastian checked again for another "accessible" room. A few minutes later I was told there was another room that I could look at to see if it would be satisfactory. I went downstairs to the desk to get the room key. Sebastion was leaving for the evening and another heavy set women greated me and gave me a card key to room 302. I went to 302 and opened the door. This was a small suite with a larger bathroom (still not large enough for a power chair) but the bedroom was at such an angle to the doorway that it limited anyone's ability to get in. In addition to the angle of the doorway, there was a chest in the bedroom that blocked access through the door. So now I have to choose between two rooms that were not accessible. I went back down to the front desk to explain that these rooms were not really accessible. The women wanted to argue with me instead of trying to accommodate us. In her words, "both of those rooms are handicap accessible". I explained again the issues with the rooms and then referred her to both Municode and ADA websites. She didn't care. Obviously I did not expect her to build us a room for the week. I did expect her to offer us a cancellation without penalties but that didn't happen.. My advise here is that even though a hotel claims to have accessible rooms, you need to ask if they meet the latest ADA code requirements. The Black Bear Inn does not. I spent several nights having to transfer my wife in and out of the bathroom. My back has been killing me since. Since it was a heavy tourist week (fall leaves in October) there were no other hotel rooms available. We stuck it out for several nights and stayed away from the hotel as much as possible. At least the State Parks have some handicap accessible bathrooms.
