Your visit to Kerela would be incomplete without an experience of the houseboat. Our experience with Spice Routes was undoubtedly one the high points of our trip. I quite loved the names of their houseboats, all named after a spice , which is local to Kerela. We were three couples with a child and had booked a three bedroom houseboat...

Judging from other reviews, there is quite a difference between the experience people have on the Akkarakalam houseboats (also called Spice Route Houseboats) and in the home stay rooms. We can only speak to the houseboats, and we had a great time for two nights and would definitely recommend this company for a backwater cruise. We spent two nights in...

Unfortunately we stayed here 3 nights on our tour of southern India. It was supposed to be a relaxing homestay in a deluxe room, away from everything, but it turned out to be far from that. Our arrival coincided with a large tour group stopping by for lunch. We were shown our rooms by the manager, who quickly excused himself...

Stayed with an OAT tour for 2 nights on the Gold Houseboat, but our group used 3 or 4 total boats. The boats were 5 star, the cooking only so so. But a great backwater experience and we really got to see and experience life on the backwaters. Loved walking through the heritage property on the way to our boat....

Enjoyed food, helpful staff, lovely setting. However the room was very dark, most lights didn't work and no hot water. The main function was the house boat business, and the accommodation at the house needs attention.

We stayed at the Akkarakalam Memoirs houseboat (Cardamon) for one wonderful night. We were on a tight schedule, but will definitely stay at least 2 nights the next time we are so lucky to be in the area. The all experience has been great, Soumya from the reservation team was very helpful and kind. We had the cardamon boat all...

The proeprty is vintage one and therefore needs maintanance. However it has not been maintained by the landlord. Food quality was bad with limited menu options. It appears that the land lord's focus most probably is more on the house boat business due to which the hotel rooms are getting neglected. The location is other wise quite good. If maintained...

The hotel rooms are very dark with no proper windows. There are no decent communal areas to sit in. Sadly the website led us to believe that there would be plenty of activities provided by the hotel and we booked to stay for 5 nights. This was far too long as there is not really much provided by the hotel...

Firstly the two staff here are superb : the gentlemanly manager with whom it was a pleasure to chat and the friendly smiling man who served the meals and looked after the bags. Secondly, the old house is charming, with dark wood rooms and old family photos adorning the hallway walls. However: right in front of the house is the...

“We had a room that had a covered bathroom. What I didn't like about it was that, although it had a window, it was totally covered in some kind of grille so you couldn't see out. I felt claustrophobic.”
