Houseboat that we had was clean and well maintained, staff was courteous only downside was amount of food prepared. So if extra egg required it was not available, extra not available. This was the only difference between beginning excellent and creating wow factor. My first visit was wow experience hence visited again but this time it dropped to excellent. Don't...

We spent one day and night on the houseboat called Karamanayar. Boat reserved for only 2persons with 3 crew members. Strengths: Nice and relaxing trip with a very good view of the canals, the local people's everyday life. Boat with an upper deck facilitating the view and the relaxation. Very good food on board. Weaknesses: Urgent need to renovate the...

We stayed two nights on the boat with a crew of three and a chef. It was fantastic to slowly cruise around the beautful Kerala backwaters. The chef prepared some amazingly delicious local food. I think we ate all their Masala Dosa though.. we stopped often to look the scenery and walk around villages and bought local produce for dinner....

We had a one night cruise on a small Xandari rice barge booked exclusively for us. It was a fantastic experience and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Kerala or Southern India. The cruise left at lunch time and returned around 9:00am the next morning which we thought was just about the right amount of time for us to...

The Backwaters of Kerala are lovely but awfully expensive if you stay on one of these luxury boats. I'd probably do a day trip in a smaller craft. The boat was good but the bathroom smelled musty. Our lunch of fresh local fish was really good, but dinner was not that memorable. Very poor bar on board (we took our...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Xandari Riverscapes Life on the backwaters has a different set of rules. First, since there are no roads we depend on canals, rivers and lakes for our travel routes. Most families have a boat of their own. Children often learn to swim at least as early as they learn to walk-you are likely to see kids splashing in the local equivalent of a playground. Their school buses float, as do the postal vessels delivering to homes here. Even the supermarket floats!River Escapes provides an experience of the backwaters of Kerala in a vessel whose history harkens back to the ancient rice trade of this region while also providing modern comforts. These vessels are designed to balance authenticity and innovation. They are engineered to balance comfort and environmental responsibility - we pioneered the technology now considered the gold standard of emissions reduction. Most importantly they are staffed by members of the local community who are proud to showcase their corner of God's Own Country to visitors.A unique set of waterways in our state's central region allows us to showcase three districts that represent the "rice bowl" of Kerala - all by boat. We started operating our houseboats in 2006 and are now the respected leader on the backwaters in terms of environmental responsibility, commitment to the communities where we bring visitors and in terms of guest satisfaction. ... more   less
