We went to Bali a few days early before a cruise and I wanted a place to recover from jet lag. I picked Amankila and was impressed with the gorgeous room, gracious service and spectacular hillside setting. Our room was spotlessly clean and private; it included a pool and an ocean view. Yes, there were some tankers in the ocean but still it was quite pretty. The staff was genuinely helpful and intuitive; there were many little touches that made our stay special and relaxing. It was such a pleasure to be spoiled. I would recommend the market tour and cooking class with Jati (he is a force of nature) and the tour of East Bali. Both were very enjoyable and interesting.

We just completed a fabulous visit to Amankila. The property is spectacular, physically one of the most beautiful resorts we have seen. We had an ocean suite that provided spectacular sunrise views out over the ocean.

The pool and beach bales were very private, we hardly saw any other guests. And the service and food/drink at both the pools and the beach were great. From reading about Bali, I had been worried that there would be trash on the beach and in the water, but there was none. It seemed the full time attendant cleaning the beach was mostly picking up flowers and leaves that would blow down from the tropical ‘jungle’ surrounding the property.

For daytime excursions we did a three hour East Bali driving tour and a village cycling tour. We highly recommend both. The location of Amankila is a bit far from the airport (1 hour 45 minutes), but it is well worth the drive to get away from the tourist areas and city and see the local villages and countryside which are just outside the gates of Amankila and therefore easily accessible on the tours.

One evening we did a private Satay dinner in a bale on a hill which overlooked the ocean on one side and a valley of rice paddies on the other. Our server, was very attentive and the food was delicious. Our only complaint was the flies that we had to wave away.

We also did a private Rijsttafel dinner poolside. It provided a lovely assortment of Indonesian dishes. And for the small additional cost we had amazing service from our private waiter.

I had notified the hotel that my husband is gluten free prior to our arrival, and we never once had to remind them at any meal.

We would definitely want to return to Amankila.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Amankila during our recent trip to Bali, and it has raised our expectations for future vacations.

We opted into the VIP airport service, where a representative of the resort meets you right outside your gate and escorts through the airport to the car service. We got out of the airport in about 5 mins. I believe that the car service to/from the airport or your next destination in Bali is included in the daily rate. The ride is very comfortable and they have drinks and snacks prepared for you since the rides around Bali can be pretty long.

The ride from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar is about three hours, so you can nap or read a book en route to the resort.

Amankila is located off a mountain in East Bali. The resort is relatively secluded and has its own private beach. We did stay during a relatively busy time, so we did see other couples and families around, but we never had to wait to eat breakfast or lounge in a cabana, and was able to book all of the activities we wanted to do: spa treatments on both days, dinner by the pool, private dinner on the beach, and morning snorkel cruise on their beautiful boat. The ladies at the spa were so kind and skilled. I fell asleep during one of my massages. The cruise was fun as well. We were on a boat with two other couples and saw live coral reef during our snorkel trip. They also pack cute little lunches for the cruise. I recommend getting one of each (Western & Indonesian) lunches, so you get to try more food :)

The resort also plans activities throughout the day: morning yoga, afternoon tea, evening movies.

You have the option of eating breakfast in your room or in their dining room. We opted for the dining room. The highlights of our breakfasts would have to be the fluffy omelets and the fluffy banana pancakes.

The highlight of our entire stay was probably the private dinner on the beach. The chef met with us earlier in the day to put together the dinner menu, and the food was incredible. We had grilled lobster, shrimp, and mahi-mahi, beef & chicken satay, veggies, and more. The fish soup we had was so good that I emailed them for the recipe when I got home. They set up a bonfire and a private cabana for post-dinner relaxation.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed staying in our beautiful ocean view room, swimming and lounging on the private beach, swimming and lounging by the three-tiered pool, and all of the activities Amankila had to offer. It was peaceful and relaxing, and just everything we needed for this vacation. I highly recommend staying at Amankila and would definitely come back on my next trip to Bali.

I took the Kilasari suite for a week before Covid-19 hit. It was a beautiful Oasis. The room and pool were incredibly luxurious without being ostentatious. They had a warm and welcoming vibe about them despite the blingy pool and tropical vistas. I would occasionally go down to the beach to read and swim, and to the restaurant for beautiful fresh meals. But I could've spent weeks just lazing by the pool in that villa. The staff are delightful. The manager was a lovely guy who would quietly check in from time to time. Everyone learns and knows your name. I would duck out for 30 minutes and the room would be cleaned and treats would be left even though I never saw anyone working on it. This resort sets the standard for understated luxury.

Full review of Amankila resort .
Our last trip to Bali was divided into staying at 3 resorts
1st one was Bulgari for 1 week
2nd was Mandapa a Ritz Carlton Reserve for 5 days
3rd was Amankila also for 5 days
As we are Luxury Travelers we had very high expectations due to staying at Amankila. It was our first time having a stay with AMAN brand .
I have reserved infinity pool Willa number 20. There is only one villa in this category at the resort.
Resort location: it is located on the east coast on the hill. Views are breathtaking and seeing the ships at the sea was not annoying for us . I was only one time at the beach- it was the worst one we have seen on Bali . Also the facilities around the beach are really very poor.
The main problem in the resort are “steps “ there is no possibility to have a buggy drive to your villa so holidays with kids are problematic in this aspect.
Overall 6/10
Villa design : unfortunately comparing to all the resort villas we have stayed through it was one of the worst one . There are no modern solutions inside and furniture are very old . Everything was scratching.
Overall 3/10
Service: the biggest disadvantage was the lac of GEM service… I couldn’t understand how resort which a price of 2300 usd per night can have standards like that .
Room service was barely one per day and we had to make a special request for extra cleaning. One time after our daily trip we have arrived to the villa which was not cleaned from the morning time .
Overall 2/10
Food: it was decent but nothing special
There are two restaurants but just next to each other so there is no variety in this case .
3/10

To sum up- it was one of the biggest disappointments throughout our all journeys and resort stays . After this stay there is a lack of good feelings about AMAN brand . I was reading a lot about AMAN junkies and truly I don’t understand this phenomenon.

We stayed at the Indrakila Suite at Amankila and it was beautiful! The most beautiful hotel room I have ever stayed in in my life. The staff at Amankila can read your mind and anticipate what you want before you open your mouth, everyone knows who you are and where you are staying, so they never ask your room number. Food was also excellent, ask for the fried rice to be localized if you like authentic Indonesian food. Hope to be back one day.

Amankila delivered a quietly luxurious and service-oriented stay. We would absolutely return.

After pouring over reviews of Bali’s top hotels for months, we’re incredibly happy we decided to stay at Amankila. The grounds are truly breathtaking (not a leaf out of place during our visit). The villas are excellently designed and have an authenticity not available at brand new resorts. The food was very good overall and we found the variety to be solid. But the biggest highlight was the service. From the moment we were picked up by an Amankila driver to the moment we were dropped off at the airport, the service was amazing — anticipating our needs before we even realized them in a subtly, unobtrusive way. The beach and housekeeping staff in particular should be commended for going the extra mile.

A few things to note:

The pictures are absolutely accurate. What you see is what you get — in all the best ways. That iconic three-tiered pool is a showstopper, but so are the beach club, restaurants, and hidden corners all over the gorgeous property.

The beach was pristine during our visit, a testament to the staff cleaning it each day. The beach cabanas were the perfect spot to spend the afternoon!

Other reviewers have been critical of the container ships waiting to enter port. Bali isn’t a private island so some slack needs to be given. We actually viewed the ships as entertainment by counting them each day, noting which had left, etc. It’s all how you view any situation and we chose to approach it with a positive light.

The villas are gorgeous and massive. They’re well maintained and we could not fault them. We had the privilege of staying in a pool villa and infinity pool villa. We actually preferred the greater privacy of the pool villa. It was incredible to dine next to our private pool. And it was especially magical coming “home” after dinner in the restaurants to see a few candles placed around the pool! Again, the staff makes memories at every turn.

For experiences, we didn’t venture off property here as we’d been touring Bali for two weeks. However we did book a private poolside dinner and massages. Both experiences were very good. The thing to note is that we wish we’d have reached out earlier to book a private beach dinner as it wasn’t available during our stay. This is one area where staff could actually be more proactive in advance.

Overall, Amankila and it’s staff lived up to our very high expectations and — now that we’re home — we are dreaming of our days spent at Bali’s “peaceful hill.”

My wife and I chose this destination for our honeymoon. We are on our third day here, and I have to say this resort lacks the "Aman" name. We are staying in the nicest one bedroom suite on the property (~$2500/night). Everyone tries too hard with little results. The staff are very courteous, but do not speak English well enough to communicate with anyone, including concierge or room service, etc. (They ask me 10 times the same question to the point I just have to say "I'm busy, go away" and that hurts me to say. So far we have gone on their ATV Jungle tour which was alright given that it just started up. Our "private boat ride" was basically a canoe that went less than 10kmh up and down shoreline. Disappointing. Food all tastes the same with no flavor. My favorite food item would be the salt I add. Their "spa" is more or less non-existent and all massages, etc. are done in room. Their "gym" is a few items placed outside on the grass near the beach. I hope our stay improves, but felt compelled to give this review.

The hotel grounds are amazing and the rooms are well appointed. The general manager Ernst was very kind and generous in making sure are trip was very noteworthy. I was there for the New Year, drove all the way from Gianyar because someone suggested that it would a great place to spend the afternoon over a book and some coffee. I didn’t realise I was driving a long time until the general manager shook my hands and got a nice, genuine greeting (he mentioned my hands they were cold). That was a nice touch from Amankila. Then I was guided down to the restaurant where I ordered their home made ginger beer while I read a book, overlooking the sea while the sky was drizzling. I was there longer than expected and eventually ordered the Soto Ayam (which didn’t happen to be in the menu). It was nice that the Japanese tourist sitting in the table next to me also ordered the same thing. The service was impeccable, the scenery was great, the soto with red rice was my icing on the cake. I drove back hoping to one day stay a few nights at Amankila on my next trip to bali.

i'm not a surfer, and i didn't see anyone surfing near the hotel when we were there. You may want to check out the surf break at the end of the DPS airport runway... I was looking at that when we took off and landed at the airport. It looked huge.
