Hotel Riu Sri Lanka is widely acclaimed for its excellent amenities, including expansive, spotless rooms and a variety of pools, with the all-inclusive package being a particular highlight among guests. The hotel's striking beachfront setting garners consistent praise for its breathtaking ocean views. While opinions on value vary, the warm and attentive service provided by the staff is often lauded. Although the atmosphere is generally seen as inviting, with creative daily towel art, some guests find the entertainment lacks variety. Room comfort is celebrated, despite occasional noise and maintenance issues noted by some travelers.

We first visited this hotel 4 years ago and loved the hotel, the people and Sri Lanka itself. We never normally return to the same place, but this year we felt we wanted to return and meet our old friends again. We were not disappointed!
The hotel is clean with fantastic pools, the food is excellent and the service outstanding. We met up with Roshan, one of our waiters from 4 years ago, still with the same happy smile. He always took time to chat with us. In the evenings Sajith, the bar manager, would also do the rounds, ensuring everyone was happy and having the best time. He really does care.
Likewise the guys on the beach will make your stay memorable. Some people have complained about being hassled, but these guys are just trying to make a living.
They are rightly proud of their country and will tailor-make tours for you. Just ask for Sam. His service is first class and you won't meet a more kind and trustworthy person, added to which the price will be half what the hotel charges. Look him up under Big Brother Tours If you're not interested just say and they won't bother you. Likewise the ladies on the beach are trying to make a living selling their clothes which are actually very good quality.
The people make this country, they are so friendly and hospitable. Their economic situation is dire and they need their tourism industry to pick up, so if you're thinking of going, please do, and try and support the locals, you will be made so welcome.
Miss this place and its lovely people so much! Will definitely return again one day!

We arrived at the Riu Sri Lanka on 14th March 2020. We were given a warm welcome and shown to our room with its huge sea facing view , It was a strange time and the hotel was quieter than normal and became quieter each day as holiday makers were flown home. However throughout our stay the staff team were brilliant, the catering team put on a daily spread of foods from around the world, the entertainment team continued with daytime activities and put on a show each evening, the bar staff continued mixing cocktails with a smile and the cleaning staff cleaned the rooms, and corridors from morning till night. When less than a week after our arrival the whole of Sri Lanka went into a curfew many of the staff team including our Tui rep joined us in living at the hotel, thus ensuring that we were able to continue on with our holiday . Sadly for us our holiday was cut short and we were flown home a week early . We were informed that we would receive compensation from Tui in a letter given to us by our Tui rep, but we have heard nothing so far and when we rang the store we booked in they told us that they were closed and we would be contacted by telephone so we wait. Finally I would recommend this hotel and its brilliant staff team to anyone and when this crisis is over we would love to go back .

After initial booking for 9 days, we were so impressed we decided to stay for 18. We are husband and wife and 2 year and 5 month old daughter. First class facilities, food, staff. 2 hours drive from airport with opening of new highway. Room cleaner Chamath and supervisor Nishantha did a great job and chef Kumar was a delight to speak to each morning and his smile was infectious. We joined RIU world club as we will be coming back to another RIU resort in 2020.

We booked this holiday through TUI and after the bombing at Easter 2019 we were unsure for a long time whether we would even be able to go. Change of flights from Gatwick on TUI Dreamliner to Heathrow direct with Sri Lankan airlines was eventually the offer we received from TUI and £100 compensation for the change .
So we departed LHR on January 7th arrived in Colombo January 8th , met at airport by TUI rep and transported to the hotel in a bus . All went very smoothly
Hotel was efficient at check in and our bags were brought up to the room by a staff member .
The room was lovely , 2 double beds , spacious bathroom and a view over the pool / beach from the small balcony which had 2 chairs and a small table .
Food was plentiful and so much variety , we tried the main buffet restaurant, the Italian , the Asian and the grill . The quality in all was excellent .
There were three adult pools but we preferred the one closet to the pool bar with a view to the beach . Sunbeds were easily available.
Drinks were good and apart from them not having Baileys on several occasions I enjoyed a wide variety of choice .
The lobby bar , entertainment bar and the pool bar all serving drinks at various times . We did not go into the disco bar so cannot comment on this.
Staff are friendly and so happy to serve you . I really appreciated their hard work at the hotel . There is always cleaning going on throughout the hotel and gardens are well maintained. Restaurant staff didn’t want you to have an empty glass .. refills were frequent !
A fabulous hotel , it is 2 hours from the airport but well worth the transfer time

Without doubt a fantastic hotel. From the moment we arrived we were so impressed , we were given a private transfer by TUI and upon arrival at the hotel were told they had upgraded us to a sea view room . The room was brilliant but am sure they all are as the hotel is so well laid out. All the restaurants are superb , the food choices plentiful . The pool areas are great , being beach lovers we chose the beach area which was quiet , perfect for us. The entertainment was good but special mention for the resident band, Crossroads, especially when Fabian was there they really are a fantastic band .
All the staff cannot do too much for you . Trips - choose Tony De Silva - see Facebook page for the hotel, great value and brilliant guide.
If you fancy a change at night wander 5mins to your left on the beach to The Jungle Bar where a 2 course meal with drinks will cost you about £15. A great walk along the beach to your left through the trees and onto another beach if you fancy a stroll during the day - our weather was about 35 degrees every day .
We have no hesitation in recommending this amazing hotel ,Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and we will return

This was our second stay here and it was very good, since the troubles in 2019 the hotel has improved security with vehicle checks at the gate, luggage scanned on entry and all guests enter hotel through a metal detector.
We were checked in very quickly by the excellent reception staff, our rooms were upgraded to sea view and even though it was only 11am the rooms were ready for us.
We were taken to our rooms which were perfect very clean plenty of storage and a lovely sea view.
The service we received throughout the hotel was first class, the pool guys led by cherry had our sun beds ready every morning.
Dasun was on the portable bar most days and provided an excellent service.
In the buffet restaurant Dilan had our drinks on the table ready for us each evening,
There is a very good range of food available at all meals even for a fussy eater like myself.
We took part in many day time activities and were well looked after by Sanju, Danesh and Asheen.
We had a problem with the air con and door lock both were sorted within 30mins.
The Tui reps are at the hotel daily and are very friendly.
The boys and girls selling trips and tee shirts on the beach are very friendly we had an excellent day out with Madu.
On our last day we were not leaving the hotel until 5pm and Maria from the management team arranged a late check out room for us which was a big help thank you.

Me and my husband visited this outstanding hotel at the end of Feb 2022 & before had read some of the worst reviews I had seen, ignoring those potential pre judgments we were going and had to make my own mind up.

Having come home and writing this review I can safely say this was up there in my top three, and I have travelled the globe and done two world cruises.

Where do you start, from start to end outstanding. After two interconnecting flights from the UK we were welcomed with a drink and offered a shower room with towels to freshen up whilst waiting for our room.

We were given a sea view approx centre of the hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean on the fourth floor. Comfortable bed, clean bedding whenever we wanted, room spotlessly cleaned daily with toiletries topped up and fridge also topped up with duty free drinks for our pre purchased duty free of our choosing we had bought on the way.

I usually get fed up by time my holiday has ended with and are not usually one for buffet restaurants, but this has to be one of the best. Again I would never have sweets, being more of a savoury man. I cant stand the pastry guy lol as he created some of the best cakes and desserts I have ever had abroad. They were kind of bite sized, so you could sample anything. Never seen anything like it, I had never eaten semolina since being a child, I bite size, would you believe that.
If you didn't like this, there was again a Asian, Italian and Grill restaurant as alternatives, we tried them all and not disappointed.

Outside swimming pools spotless, pool attendees great, putting up brollies for anyone elder who was struggling, which I thought was nice to see. Drinks offered by trolly as you sat on your sun bed. Amazing swim up bar, taking away that feeling of the last two years. Local drinks as good as branded ones at home. But nevertheless as some had pointed out, there were some branded drinks if you wanted, but to be honest, I could not tell the difference anyhow.

And when we went out to what were many turtle farms we could get a tuc tuc out the front for a £4 in their money return Jo it net.

I could go on, but won't as I would say, just go for it, forget then reviews she people focus on the negative and make your own mind up, enjoy.
We will return one day, and I seldom say that with so many places to go in one lifetime.

Putting my hotel reviews to one side the Sri Lankan people are amazing.

What is there not to say ..... faultless.
Beautiful hotel and grounds overlooking the quiet beach. Food was outstanding at every meal. The animation team were fab, plenty of activities during the day but without any pressure to participate and a professionally choreographed show each evening. Every single member of staff was cheerful and obliging, with particular credit to Nadum (supervisor) and his 4th floor room cleaning team and to waiter Hemanthe. Security and hygiene was thorough and reassuring throughout the hotel.
If travelling to south west Sri Lanka this hotel is where you want to be

Last day after 2 wk stay here, beautiful hotel, The riu chain must realise that the staff make this hotel. Every member of staff is polite and courteous always willing to help, room was a side sea view was ok, we would have preferred the sea view room, had a bad neighbor for a week very noisy and playing music so couldn’t use the balcony. Food is so so, fish was always over cooked which is a shame as it’s on the doorstep can’t understand why so overcooked, hot food is made and kept under lights so not cooked in front of you which is what we are used to hence food was often cold in the main restaurant, the asian italian resturants food cooked
to order which was much better, however not open every night, the grill restaurant was nice but was only allowed to visit once and had to be bked at reception, hubby had steak which looked lovely but couldn’t eat as was cut wrongly hence sinu throughout, chefs needs butchery skills and definitely how to cook fish! I understand they maybe can’t cook in front of you due to numbers but something needs to change here as food lacking.
Snack bar food after restaurant closed was very poor with very dry sandwich’s lots of fly’s, visited once but hardly had anything so make sure u don’t miss lunch, used the out of hrs for a sandwich again very dry.
Whole place was spotlessly clean, animation staff need 5* Used manga tours on the beach for money changing as fab rate also used for all tours and tut tut’s good prices excellent drivers would recommend them. just ask for manga at the beach gate

We have just returned home after staying 2 weeks at this hotel. Beautiful hotel, kept spotlessly clean and the facilities are excellent.
The food was amazing, varied and plentiful, with the most tastiest curries we have ever had. Plenty of choice for everyone's palate.
The rooms, very, very nice room with stunning sea view. Some fantastic towel origami in our room every day.
Bathroom was top notch, with twin sinks and a fabulous walk in shower.
The staff - never have I seen such genuine smiles on faces as on the staff here. Cleaners, house keeping, bar, reception, waiters, chefs, animation team and management. Yes, I saw the management out and about. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are a credit to this hotel and the management and the Riu company should be extremely proud!
Thank you to EVERY member of staff at this hotel for making our first trip to Sri Lanka memorable.
There is so much to see & do on this island of paradise that we will be booking Hotel Riu again for February / March next year to see the places we didn't get to see this time and also to return to this wonderful hotel.
** when exchanging money - check all your notes for any writing, scribbles or tears as these will not be accepted. Not the hotels fault but the banks in Sri Lanka.**

We have booked with Tui and the transfer from the hotel is approx 130 minutes by Private Taxi. I dont know about booking trips, there are usually several reps at the hotel to book with. I think the plugs are the three round pin type, but you can buy a universal adapter for all countries on Amazon
