We stayed 3 nights at the Ferncliff. When we arrived we were welcomed by the host of the villa who was very friendly. He immediately served us with a pot of tea/coffee and cake, which made us feel 'at home' instantly! The villa was beautiful, perfectly located (walking distance from the city center). The room was very cozy, spacious, quiet,...

Ferncliff B, General Manager at Ferncliff, responded to this review

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're very pleased you had such a good time staying a few days with us at Ferncliff. The team rises early to make those packed breakfasts for your treks, so thank you for appreciating their effort. Do come stay with us again. Best wishes, Hans

Walking into this cottage took me back in time - almost like I was in the midst of an 18th century Engish novel. Set in the country side, this is one of the most beautiful bungalows I've seen. My toddler son loved exploring the various nooks and crannies. He was also completely pampered - as we were- by the very,...

If you want to enjoy a relaxed holiday in an old colonial residence Ferncliff is the place to stay. Nestled within a beautiful Garden and Fruit Trees, this Guest House boasts Four large Bedrooms all with attached modernised bath rooms. It is located within walking distance to the Grand Hotel and Victoria Park. With a resident Manager , Butler and...

A colonial bungalow with a scent of the past. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed every moment. The house is beautifully decorated and contains only 4 rooms, so you have to order way in advance. Wilson is the waiter and he has been in the business for 40 years. He is so colonial and seems to be right out...

This is a very authentic and quaint old villa - rooms are large, lovely big bathrooms but it was missing a few finishing touches (it looks a tad tired so I just think the upkeep could be slightly better). The staff are lovely and really welcoming and the location just outside the town centre is good. My only other criticism...

The bungalow certainly has amazing character having been built in 1831 and furnished tastefully throughout with items from the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The gardens are huge and well tended. Our room was large and the ensuite bathroom had modern fittings. Although generally the service was very good our bedroom and bathroom were not serviced. However, there was a...

Very quaint and historic bungalow. Rooms were kept in as close to original as possible to maintain character with the exception of the modernised bathroom. However there was no room service, no fresh towels, or making of beds. Breakfast was a bit disappointing being English fry-up with no choice. Evening meals good, but very limited drinks list and no prices....

Thanks for the fab stay and for being so welcome to your town and hotel. Room was spacious and clean. Very comfortable bed. Amazing garden connecting to hotel. Best hot shower we have had on our travels so far! Hotel is a slight walk up a hill but lots of tuk tuks available if you need. Although, most hotels are...

Ferncliff is a wonderful step back into the past of Nuwara Eliya. The building, rooms, furniture all reflect the buildings illustrious past. The garden looks as though it's been transplanted from the heart of England with a gorgeous lawn. Service is warm & friendly. Food is excellent. A highly recommended step back into the colonial past. If you have time...

One of my favourite places we stayed in Sri Lanka. Staff were excellent, room clean, spacious and atmospheric and the food delicious too. It's really like stepping back in time. Nice touches were tea and cake on arrival, the croquet set on the lawn and the hot water bottle brought to your room without request at bed time. Couldn't recommend...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ferncliff perched on one of the highest points of Nuwara Eliya commands a view like no other of 'Little England'. This includes being set against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Pedro (Pidurutalagala), which at 2524 m (8,281 ft) is Sri Lanka's highest point. Just ten minutes walk from the Grand Hotel and the Golf Club, Ferncliff is uniquely placed to be the centre of your Nuwara Eliya universe which includes Horton Plains National Park, Tea Plantations and other locations of interest in the hill country. Deeds for the Ferncliff lands predate the founding of the first Nuwara Eliya settlement by Great White Hunter and Explorer, Sir Samuel Baker in 1846. The bungalow, now a heritage site, had its beginnings in the 1850s and the ghosts of Samuel Baker and his ilk still walk our expansive lawns hunting elephants, deer and wild boar to near extinction in the lush Nuwara Eliya valley. Today, with restorations that have retained its rustic charm, Ferncliff offers comforts that few bungalows in town can aspire to, and our team led by our chef with over 30 years of experience in the hotel trade, will ensure that your time with us will be comfortable and relaxed. Rest assured that although Ferncliff is centrally located, once inside her gates the hustle and bustle of the town is forgotten. Enjoy a game of croquet, a round of boules, or just wander around our extensive grounds which include a young rose garden and very soon, orange and pear orchards. Look no further for what promises to be a truly authentic Nuwara Eliya experience. Kindly note that, accommodation for drivers and guides are not available in the premises. ... more   less
