Situated within easy reach of restaurants, bars, and offering views of the Chugach Mountains, the Westmark Anchorage hotel boasts a prime location that many guests appreciate. However, the charm of its locale is often overshadowed by criticism of its service, described as disorganized and unresponsive. While the rooms are acknowledged for their cleanliness, they are frequently disparaged for being outdated and poorly maintained. The amenities fail to impress, with outdated features and unreliable WiFi. Moreover, the hotel's value is questioned due to high rates and underwhelming experiences.

Coming from a Holland America cruise to this is a shock (especially when they are owned by the same company). It's old, tired, scruffy and has all the character of a shoe box.
The advertising promises that all views of Chugach Mountains & Cook Inlet. What we got was great views of the car park and high brick walls. To be fair the bedroom was of a good size but the furnishings and equipment really seem to be more fitted to another decade.

Wifi is intermittent at best and there is no safe.

If you are here from a cruise then beware since you will land in Anchorage much earlier than you are able to get into your room (about 4pm) so find somewhere to go rather than kicking your heels for hours. (You can leave your luggage at the visitors' centre - which is just across the road from the hotel and is where you are dropped off.)
Please also be aware that the check-in process is chaotic. Queues form in both the main reception and at the other end of the building where your 'tour director' is supposed to hand you your keys. Keys are handed out at both locations.
Also be aware that there are only two lifts and lots of people trying to check in.

I don't know what the other hotels are like in Anchorage but I'd check them out if I were you.

This hotel could use some love. From a distance this hotel has had the basics done to it. The front lobby is nicely laid out and held two of the Holland America tours of 45 people each all at the same time. There is still a very small elevator for a very tall building. Our bags were being delivered so instead of waiting on the 90 person line up to get to our room we walked the 10 flights of stairs. When we got to our rooms our suitcases were waiting.
The room is very large and has a balcony which is nice. We got settled and started to notice all the things falling a part. The toilet paper holder was laying on the floor with the paper, there were a lot of cracks in the shower. The toilet struggled to flush every time. We went to log on to the wifi with the laptop so my spouse could get some work done we could not get on. When we talked to the front desk they laughed at us and said it rarely work so good luck. The rest of our tour group struggled to get wifi as well. If you do not offer quality wifi you should not advertise you have wifi. The room was at least very clean and the bed was very soft but comfortable.

This was our first trip to Anchorage, so I really can't compare the Westmark to other lodgings, but the hotel seems to be rather dated. A small number of small elevators which is less than adequate when large groups arrive. We arrived by bus, but it seems like parking would be difficult if you came by car. Rooms are clean and functional. Breakfast is not included. The location does seem to be more or less centrally located relative to "downtown" Anchorage, but ironically the nearest grocery store is many blocks away (perhaps more the fault of Anchorage than the hotel).

After our Holland American cruise to Alaska our first hotel stay was at the West Mark Hotel in Anchorage. From the very beginning when we walked in it was a cluster. No one knew what to do with all the passengers checking in from the cruise lines that was pre-arranged because Holland America has something to do with Westmark. After more than an hour possibly an hour and a half of wasted time we finally got our room key and put our luggage and backpacks down we questioned the front desk as to their restaurant and bar and they said oh, that hasn’t been open since Covid. We ordered pizza out and had it delivered by Uber and when we asked for paper plates and napkins they went and got us some paper towels. We also asked to go into their closed dining room area to have a table large enough to play some board games or cards, that was totally off-limits. We are ready to march everything over to the Marriott and stay there I’m sure we would be treated better than we have been here this far. If you have options of staying elsewhere I highly recommend doing so.

Clean but very spartan rooms I got the breakfast buffet ( very minimal- not that great quality of food)
My wife just wanted oatmeal and they charged her $25 just for oatmeal. Take it or leave it when I inquired.
The next morning, my wife and I went to Captain Cook’s restaurant which is just a block or two down the road how to incredible breakfast for $23 each excellent atmosphere incredible service and the venue was just very very nice. You definitely felt like you’re in a five star resort versus a one star hostel
This is where Holland America put up all their guest at the Westmark where princess put them at Captain Cook and we compare prices wasn’t much difference buying the package

Not only as a Neptune Suite guest on Holland America, but as a regular person who just expects their hotel to be clean, I was disgusted by our accommodations at the Westmark in Anchorage. Shabby, dusty, dirty and embarrassing decor. Holland America needs to rethink their hotels on the land portion of their Alaska tours. I have certainly made my travel agent aware of how horrible the hotels Holland uses and suggested she does not recommend Holland for this reason.

The cruise lines put up their passengers there so there's a cruise information desk available. It is also only a black and a half away from the Visitors Information Center and the Trolley starting point. There are several good restaurants just across the street and down the next block. Breakfast is a buffet but if you don't want that much they have a Starbucks counter in the middle where you can just get coffee and a pastry.

The Westmark Anchorage was well located in the center of the city. It was an easy walk to restaurants, shopping and attractions. The building is clearly a little older, the ground floor was a bit of a maze, and the hallways were a bit dated. However, our room was nice. We had a small balcony (as it seems all the rooms did) and a nice view of the city and the Knik Arm.

Two busloads of Holland America Denali Cruise extension participants pulled up to the Westmark Hotel around the same time-maybe 3:30. Unfortunately, the rooms were not ready (check in time is 4:00 pm). Buses were unloaded and people crammed into the waiting area. Chaos, crowds, confusion and frustration were the main sentiments.
Now, if the hotel knows rooms are not ready until 4:00, why rush people with a 30 minute stop and a boxed lunch at the McKinley Princess hotel? Perhaps leave the original location in Anchorage a little later, have a longer lunch break, or have a hospitality room with refreshments available when people arrive in Anchorage from the long bus ride would be good ideas. Hotel itself was average if a bit worn. Location was average and rooms a nice size. The reason for the 3 star vs 2 star was the employees of the Westmark Hotel (not Holland American cruise representatives) were exceptionally helpful when asked for any assistance.

Holland America booked this for us as part of our cruise/land package and it was awful. The room had a stale smell, popcorn ceilings were crumbling, hair was in the outdated and poorly repainted tub, toilet was dirty, there was clothing and old towels from previous occupants in our room and the wifi did NOT work. The front desk tried telling us it was being worked on and to try again later, but after reading past reviews over 6 mos. this is an ongoing issue. The following morning we saw all the Holland America employees staying at Hotel Captain Cook which was a MUCH NICER place. Having paid a premium for an 18 day land/cruise package I thought we would have been treated better. Shame on Holland America for not keeping to their standards on the land portion of the package. After a great cruise this was a real disappointment.
