I rarely write reviews but use TripAdvisor often and felt the need to write one about our stay. We compared this hotel and the Omni (1 block away) and ended up staying at the Commonwealth due to the suite offering because we have two toddlers. Huge mistake. While the valet and front desk folks were very nice the hotel was disgusting and the food in the restaurant was not edible. Our room smelled terrible, had dead spiders in multiple places out in the open and strange plastic covering all the windows. The bed linens did not look or smell clean and the couch was so gross we wouldn't let our kids sit on it. The common areas were also really dirty. We arrived after traveling for 11 hours and were really hungry so tried to grab food at the restaurant to bring to our room - it was, without exaggeration, the worst food I've ever been served. It was not actually edible and we ended up throwing it all out. The next morning we stopped at the Omni to get Starbucks and realized we made a huge mistake, so we changed our return stay (we were on a road trip an coming back to Richmond a week later) to the Omni. The difference between these hotels is night and day - the restaurant at the Omni was fantastic, the rooms were so clean, and all common areas were beautiful. The most shocking thing is that our stay at the Omni ended up being less expensive than our stay at the Commonwealth. I really hate to leave negative reviews and I'm sure they are trying during a touch time for hotels and restaurants but want to warn people against staying here because it was such a bad experience. …
The stay at The Commonwealth harkened back to a time when a hotel and its entire staff took great pride in making sure that each guest was provided with a superb experience in which every want or need was accommodated when possible. From the booking with super staff member Mariah, to the suite size, to the view, to the lovely breakfast, to the efficient check-out, every aspect of the stay was first class. Highly recommended. And by the way - the elevators were just fine - why people thought they were too small should travel more. ;-)
Nearly everything about our stay was terrible. But I will start with the good: the bed was comfortable and the front desk and valet employees were pleasant. Our main complaints are the cheap amenities and the filthy condition of the public spaces -- days old spills, thick dust, chipped paint - it's as though no employee in the hotel ever looks down. Our room was never serviced in spite of our repeated requests over three nights of staying there. We asked for towels, even finally going to the front desk for help, and they were never delivered. We returned again, and they retrieved some from a nearby storage room. The shower has mold all around it, and would accumulate an inch of water during a shower. The windows in our king suite were covered in a thick plastic that is filthy, ruining the view. The hair dryer was disgusting - it looked like it had been retrieved from a garbage bin in an alley after 15 years of use, covered in thick layers of filth and clogged with dust. There is thick dust in places just beyond view, such as behind the bedside tables which you discover when trying to plug in a device. There is no glassware nor mugs, just cheap plastic-lined paper cups; the shower gel was empty; the mini body lotion was clearly nearly empty - the housekeeping people just don't care is the impression we got. It just goes on and on. The restaurant was barely operating, often closed off, and had almost no patrons. The contrast between how the hotel seems on the website and how it was in real life is extreme. …
The restaurant was awful. . The food was so bad we left and went to the Omni to eat. The bathroom shower had mold and dirt. They were quite stingy with bath towels. 2 towels for two guests staying. The room size was nice.
Everything was perfect! Yoshua at valet was exactly what we needed when we arrived. We had been on the road for quite some time, coming from DC. He welcomed us, helped us with luggage and the elevators, and parked our car. The front desk personnel were very friendly and helpful. The room was beautiful, clean, quiet, and comfortable. We will be back in the hopes of seeing Yoshua and staying in another wonderful room at The Commonwealth.
From check in to check out, the staff was friendly and helpful. Vallet service was quick. The rooms are huge and the sitting area sofa is actually comfortable! Quiet hotel and each room is named with its own mural in the door—very cool!
This Hotel was nothing but awesome from virtual check-In to sending answers to additional questions via text before arrival. Then then staff at the moment of arrival. ( Valet & Team) ..All while Training a new member at the front desk ( she was amazing-day 3 or 4 ) the team was excellent. Down to eart and very friendly and helpful. The suite we selected was perfect for 3 - could accommodate easily 4 ) , no issues … We were so comfortable in the space. We had plans around the city - the team at Commonwealth were very helpful and everything was.easily within reasonable distance. We have decided to make this our Hotel of choice each and every time we come to Richmond VA . Thank you Commonwealth of Richmond VA !
We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was perfect location for the wedding we were attending and made it easy for us to walk to the venue and restaurants/bars. The king suite was beyond amazing and definitely made up for the small elevators. I also loved the artwork on the floor and how each room was named after some location in Richmond. Valet was very helpful as well! Overall very kind, pleasant and helpful staff and a hotel full of unique charm!
I had a wonderful experience when I was there (two nights) and I would unconditionally recommend it to anyone! Gorgeous historic building with exceptionally clean modern room and gracious hospitality including so speedy valet service.
This hotel continues to have great staff who are super friendly and helpful. Location is great, and the valet parking fantastic. I didn't expect to have to request daily room servicing - the COVID excuse is now out of date. Our ac didn't work, heated only, which was a shame as one of the things I like about the hotel.
