Vigilius mountain resort is 1,500 meters above everyday life. This boutique luxury resort is a member of Design Hotels and can be reached exclusively by cable car, the panoramic windows in the 41 rooms furbished with natural materials like wood, clay and linen offer inspirational views of the Dolomite Mountains and the surrounding woods. Here it is possible to open up, and draw new vigour and energy from the placid wisdom of nature, while trifles are left behind in the valley. In the spa, the infinity pool, whirlpool, sauna and steambath offer relaxation and regeneration as well as carefully selected massages and treatments, using pure and natural care products.Move & explore is the name of the sports and relaxation programme, including outdoor and indoor activities: mountain biking, hiking, nordic walking as well as yoga, 5 Tibetans(R), archery and much more.Blessed with its location in South Tyrol, the cuisine is indicative of the area with two cultures: Alpine and Italian. Restaurant 1500 and Stube Ida invite to experience two different gastronomic concepts, creative international cuisine or traditional local specialties.

I have stayed at this hotel more than a dozen times over the past 10+ years. I remain positive about the hotel (see pros), but I am developing some concerns (see cons) that are causing me to reconsider. The shifting clientele may reflect some of my ‘cons’: formerly a mix of British/American, Italian & German to what seems to be primarily a German/Austrian clientele

Pros: a groundbreaking eco hotel that is still ahead of its time
Great rooms and public areas in great condition…it is hard to believe the hotel was built 20 years ago
Great car-free location with nice views plus peace & quiet as you reach it by a lift that takes you high above the town of Lana
Great guest spaces: spa, sauna, pools, sun decks, library
Nice chairlift that is free to hotel guests from 9 to 17:00

Cons:
The 2nd, informal restaurant/bar no longer serves dinner so there is no bar open in the evening nor an informal dining option
On my last few stays the food in the high end restaurant (the only choice) has definitely slipped in terms of quality while increasing in terms of price
Logging in the areas above the hotel and new construction have made several of the trails less appealing
The switch to allowing dogs is, for me, a big negative as some owners do not control their pets properly (I.e. dog on dog scrimmages, dogs in the lounge, dogs let out to run loose outside). Fortunately, so far no dogs are allowed in the high end restaurant.
The frequent staff turnover results in a lack of continuity in service and procedure

The hotel itself is a great design and the rooms are extremely comfortable. The public spaces are quite large, varied and well thought out for a smal to medium sized hotel. Given the number of high end alternative resorts in the area and the ‘cons’ that are surfacing, Vigilius is slipping its former status as ‘the clear choice’ to ‘a possible choice’.

Dear valued guest, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback about your experiences at our hotel over the past decade. We appreciate your loyalty and your thoughtful review. It's heartening to hear that you've enjoyed the eco-friendly aspects of our hotel, its beautiful rooms, and the serene car-free location. We take pride in maintaining our facilities in top condition even after 20 years, and we're delighted that you've noticed and appreciated this effort. We also appreciate your candid feedback on areas that have raised concerns for you. We understand your disappointment regarding the changes. We have already implemented some changes with our newly opened honesty bar (drinks for guests free to take). We offer the option for guests to dine until 7 pm in our stube ida, however we are not able to continue evening service in both restaurants, which was a hard desicion for us to take. We continuously strive to meet and exceed our guests' expectations in all mentioned areas, and your comments will help us address these issues. Regarding the inclusion of dogs, we understand it may not be to everyone's preference. We will work on ensuring that pet owners adhere to proper control and etiquette to maintain a harmonious environment for all our guests. We greatly value your loyalty and feedback. We aim to regain your confidence as "the clear choice" for your future stays, and we hope you'll give us another chance to provide you with an exceptional experience. Thank you for choosing vigilius. Warm regards, Eva Maria Zöggeler & Vera Dejori, Hotel Managers - vigilius mountain resort

A very beautiful eco luxury hotel up on the mountain in the middle of nature, you get there by cable car. We loved everything about the place, staff was friendly, rooms are beautiful, food is good. You can really relax, unwind, hike...spa area with pool, sauna and whirlpool is very nice and there are plenty of places to relax and read. Generous spaces... In the evening, an aperitivo is served on the nice terrace. Can’t really relate to anyone complaining about this hotel! Dog friendly. There is a good activities program (archery, tai chi...) and numerous hiking trails. A very special hotel with a soul! You can see that it was built by a visionary. We will surely return.
For whom I would recommend Vigilius: people who like nature, design, architecture, down to earth rustic luxury, minimalism, care about ecology, simplicity (less is more).
For whom it’s not: people who look for a lively bar in the evening, a climate unfriendly aircon in the middle of nature, and guests who find a reason to complain about anything.

... and that was quite disappointing. As we arrived, we first had difficulties to find the parking to the cable car. After finding it, we struggled to find a parking spot. We then pulled our large suitcases up the stairs to the cable car. After check-in, the hotel told us we had to move our car to a different place. So we went down again but the wait for the cable car was very long. So that took care of our late afternoon/evening.

Why doesn‘t the hotel have a person in the valley to help the guests? This example shows the lack of attention and service.

The room is nice though. The design of the hotel as well.

This is a beautiful hotel in a lovely location. We spent 7 days in June 2005 and overall had a good time. However considering the stunning photos, the reviews and the cost, we were expecting excellence. We were disappointed. The food was terrible. Some of the waiters were quite apologetic about the fact that the cooks were "German and not very good". Whatever the nationality of the cooks, after trying the two restaurants a few times we gave up and decided to go out for dinner every night. This would have been fine, except that the hotel is rather isolated and connected to the village only by cable car, with the last run at 10:10 pm. This meant we had to have dinner early and could not linger over a glass of wine or two... The other problem was the managers' decision to cater almost exclusively for the German speaking guests, leaving the others feeling unwelcome and bored. Thus, the cinema would project American movies in German with English undertitles, never the other way around. The gym class in the morning (e.g. yoga) was run only in German. The daily bulletin (e.g. proposed activities, forecast) was often available only in German. Some of the staff were even rude about us not speaking or understanding German, to the point that we ended up trying to avoid them at all cost. This was in contrast with the majority of the staff however, who were very polite. The SPA personnel were also very good and welcoming. On balance we will not go back. Sad.

As a three star plus hotel it could be acceptable, but as a five star: a disaster.
My husband and I have travelled widely for more than 30 years and stayed in modest, as well as luxury hotels all over Europe, and especially in Italy, where we live.
Stating that "we have no wifi, as we would like our guest to relax comepletely" comes across as simply patronising, confusing bad service with good (who decides what is relaxing?).
The cable supplied instead did not work, reception staff adamantly maintaining it wasn't their fault.
The same reception staff was ignorant of even the names of common Italian newspapers, did not get us promised newspapers (The Guardian and Financial Times not available), and did not take Diners Credit Card although stated in brochures and on website.
The special 3-days weekend offer stated in the information folder in the room gave a price of 883.- Euro, which meant we payed between 400 and 500 Euros for one extra night...
Waitress in the 'Stube' restaurant argued (in the literal sense of the word) that it didn't matter if white wines and rosé wines were older, and in the breakfast room the head waiter - when his attention was drawn to the pitiful morsels of cheese displayed - made it clear I was being unreasonable and asked: "And what cheese would you like then?".
We also overheard a young couple being turned out of the 'Stube' restaurant one evening, when they asked for a table without having reserved. "No, we have reached our limit, I'm sorry!" (showing no sign of this by the way). There were still empty, non reserved tables, and the couple were guests in the hotel, with nowhere else to go for a meal after 7.30 pm, as the cable car stops working at that hour.
Why the toilet was a tiny cubicle with neither hand wash facility, nor bidet, beats me.
Nostalgia for old farm loos perhaps?
And to top it all: I returned with athletes foot, most probably due to rushed and inefficient cleaning of the room's shower cubicle, the floor presenting cracked tiles with black mould.

Responded Sep 30, 2012
Dear Mrs Brigitte H, Thank you for your time to explain your thoughts about your stay at the vigilius mountain resort, I have read with interest the details of your experience. I can agree with you that we are not a typical five star hotel, however what makes the vigilius mountain resort different and chosen by many guests, are its peculiarities. Our philosophy is perhaps unusual, we do not have, as a typical 5 star hotel the TV in the room, however we are glad to set it up on request, while internet has a cable connection in each room. We do not have Wi-Fi and we apologise if we have come across patronising in the way we have said it, however we thought it is a nice way to explain that we are totally deep in nature with no many daily life distractions. We do apologise for the incorrect method of payment advertised on the portal, via which you booked your room, it has been corrected now, while our website and all the other portals do not show the Diners as an accepted method of payment. We have a few different types of packages with a minimum length of stay of three nights up to the “week package” for seven nights. The packages are special rates that offer a reduce price, all the additional nights during a very demanded period have no discount and the rates are published on the internet. We have a professional team that can make mistakes on the job, however we have never had any problem in regards to our colleagues’ behaviour. We do not argue with guests and neither we come across rude, what we can apologise for, is that sometimes we require a bit of understanding perhaps due to the language barrier. We have two restaurants and both together are enough to host all our guests, when the house is fully booked, however the guests need to be split between the two. We kindly inform our guests on arrival that we have the two restaurants and to make a reservation especially, when the hotel is very busy, we are not able to sit too many people in our Parlour Ida and we regret to turn down our guests for dinner, but more than 30 people cannot be seated at the same time in it. The Restaurant 1500 is the other solution. There are plenty of possibilities to have a nice dinner in the valley at Lana and the other villages in the area and later to come back to the hotel by 11pm. Our guests are well informed about the cable car time schedule, on the pouch with the tickets – that is given on arrival by the cable car station in the valley, it is written on the board on reception and if our guests have any doubts, we are here all day for them to help. Last but not least, please note that we are very proud to have a spotless environment (rooms, restaurants, toilets and everything else), we have never ever had problems of this kind and all the certificates that we have, with the highest evaluations, prove that. We are certainly sorry to hear that some misunderstandings have spoilt your stay at the vigilius mountain resort, however we are proud to be an unusual place where to spend some relaxing time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Yours sincerely, Cristina Boggio Sales & Marketing cristina.boggio@vigilius.it

I have been to this hotel for one week in July. It was my second visit and surely won´t be the last.
The most fantastic location with stunning views of the dolomites, very fascinating and ecological modern architecture by Matteo Thun with a very relaxing simplicity.
The same goes for the staff - very relaxed - always there when you need them but never servile. All the luxury and comfort you would expect from a 5 star hotel with a price range from 250 to 600 Euros/night but at the same time nothing stiff - no dress codes. For dinner I saw a lot more people in jeans with Tods or Prada sportshoes than the classic evening suit. Most guests seemed to be somewhere between 30 and 60 years old - most of whom I talked to were in the fashion-, media- and filmbusiness.
The pool, terraces and the spa are the best I have been to in the alps - and I have seen quite a few.
As mentioned above the staff for the most part very kind and always helpful with a few exceptions in the restaurant for breakfast service. Very good wine selection. I haven´t tried the restaurant with the Tyrolian specialities but rather stuck to the restaurant 1500 which is serving a light, mediterranian inspired cuisine. There are always several 3 to 6 course menues to choose from and you can mix the courses from different menues as you wish. There were one or two minor disappointments but for the most part the food was excellent - some courses were absolutely fantastic.
If you go to Southern Tyrolia and this is the type of hotel you are looking for you surely shouldn´t miss it.

While in Munich for business-my husband and I decided to drive to Vigilius Mountain Resort for a couple of days of relaxation. It took us four hours to drive from Munich (which was very scenic). As we arrived by cable car we were greeted by the manager and introduced to one of the most unique hotel designs I've ever seen. The atmosphere is modern, rustic and organic all at the same time without a hint of pretentiousness. In one word it was heavenly.

Being rather discriminating travelers and worn out from business dealings, we were not prepared for the wonderful simplicity of the surroundings and the sophistication of the restaurant 1500. We spent a lovely Christmas with a seven course tasting menu and excellent selection of Tuscan wines. The spa is incredible with 180 views of the mountain and pine trees, and various local spa treatments.

We live in Malibu and have the opportunity to go to various California spas in Big Sur, Napa Valley and Palm Springs. This beats them hands down.

If you have the opportunity to visit GO GO GO. The secret is out!

From the first time I read about this hotel in a magazine, it was my dream to come here. Months dreaming can set some pretty high expectations...
First, the cablecar ride up to 1500 meters, then the hushed "coolness" of the lobby. Then there's the low key and informal staff, always there anticipating your every need, the way your bags magically appear in your room before you get there, the modern rooms with natural wood and no TV (Thank you for your courage!) The views of wild nature everywhere you look, the spa with its heavenly pool where you can soak outdoors basking in the rarefied cool air yet stay warm in the water, the cosy stuben restaurant with old fashioned stove, the hearty breakfast in the morning... and the lump in my throat when it was time to leave. But I'll be back.....
