Buffett: everyday the same, sometimes bacon, sometimes baked tomatoes. Fruits - sliced oranges - that's the only fruit was served on breakfast, no raw vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, salads. Ketchup and bbq sauce bowls located near jams, yoghurt and honey bowls.
Upon arrival, the hotel seemed very nice, with a nice well lit lounge and reception. The receptionist didn’t speak much English and because my flight into Malta arrived early, we were unable to check in until later. She allowed me to leave my luggage in a room behind the reception, which I thought was helpful. There were many shops along the seafront nearby so it was quite easy to kill time.
Once we got into the room, it was quite spacious however obviously dated, and there a few stains on the wall etc. The bed sheets were clean, and the beds were well made and presented. (The cleaners come in every morning to change bed sheets)
The pool outside was very small!! Countless times I kept bumping into people whilst swimming because there isn’t that much space to move around. There was so much space occupied by sun loungers that weren’t used. The space could easily be used my efficiently for a bigger pool, which would definitely satisfy many more guests.
There was an indoor pool, which was a basic square shape. It was not heated, but it wasn’t very busy so it was more ideal than the packed, tiny outdoor pool.
Our view from the room was the back of dirty apartment buildings and the pool area, so that wasn’t very satisfying at all. The balcony was tiny, and it was impossible to sit on the balcony without the smell of people smoking their cigarettes on the balconies below. This was very unpleasant, considering i’m a non-smoker.
The food was by far the worst part of the holiday. Breakfast was decent, with bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast etc. every morning, which wasn’t too bad overall. Dinner, on the other hand, was horrific. I’ve got to say this is the worst food I have ever experienced at a hotel and definitely requires major improvement. It was so bad, a few of our family members had to quit eating at the restaurant, that we paid for by the way... We ended up eating out for pretty much the whole holiday.
Overall, it could be an okay hotel for a short stay, however avoid staying at this hotel for long time periods such as 2 weeks. The staff were mostly friendly, however a few were quite arrogant, such as the restaurant staff. This is understandable though, as they are being forced to serve horrible, barely edible food. The hotel definitely exceeded my expectations though, as some of the reviews are quite harsh. It was nothing more or less than expected for the price I paid.
The towels could be changed for clean each day if required and the sheets changed midweek.
Breakfast was a choice of full cooked, continental or cereals with as much or as little as you wanted. Each evening meal there was a choice of at least 4 different mains with accompanying veg also a salad bar and plenty of desserts.
The pool area was clean and tidy with sunbeds and cafe style seating. The sun was prominent in different areas around the pool pretty much all day.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
The building work we had been advised about was unobtrusive and caused us no problems at all.
I had been wary of what to expect after reading some of the reviews, but can honestly say we had a great stay. Yes some of the decor is a bit tired and the fan In the room a bit noisy.
The hotel was probably only about half full due to current travel restrictions, so it might be a bit crowded in the dining room or pool area when full.
All in all we had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
In addition, the outdoor pool was rather dirty, with no maintenance whatsoever. Also, the advertised jacuzzi and roof terrace were abondon for the out of season period, although that was not mentioned in the advert or during the booking process. We had prepaid breakfast for the duration of our stay. We managed to eat it only the first two days as although we are not fussy the food was terrible. Heated tinned tomatoes, overly vinegar poached eggs and stinking of old oil fried bread are hardly considered a good breakfast. In all fairness the staff in the hotel was polite and helpful with exception of the night shift clerk who said to me that he will contact the hotel security in attempt to find out what happened to one of our additional duvets. Tbh, that's not really a job for the security officer, in addition when we were moved to the new room we were never given a second blanket, so we kind of spent most of the nights cuddled under one single duvet couple of bedsheets and a bed cover.
Tbh for the price that we paid I didn't expect the best and what we get was definitely average. However, simple things like hot water and sufficient bedding seems to be mandatory for me and we didn't get that. Would I stay there again? Maybe if I am on my own for a business trip on a tight budget. But will never consider for holiday destination.
The room safe is a key type safe that was 25 Euro deposit and 11 Euros to hire for 5 nights!! Surely this should be a free room facility?? Ok I understand the deposit in case of a lost key but a hire charge as well???
Finally let me guarantee this is definitely not 4 star, nowhere near. I’d give it a maximum of 2 stars.
I’ve stayed in very old Butlins chalets that are more modern. All that said, the engineer that came to fix our balcony door (yes that was also broken) was extremely helpful!
Once I’ve tried the food and drink I’ll upload a follow on report to augment this initial one, hopefully things will pick up!
Perhaps their housekeeping staff aren't being paid well, or they need more training to understand what typical standard of housekeeping should be.
The housekeeper took out the bed sheets without putting back any clean ones one day. When we asked the receptionist about this and she gave us an odd explanation. At first, she told us that the bed sheets were in the wash at the moment and the housekeeping staff would return the bed sheets later on. Then she decided to send a staff to put back on some bed sheets, but the bed sheets didn't look particularly clean.
A few hours later, I went downstairs to ask her about bringing in clean towels. She gave the same excuse and said the staff would be later to leave some clean towels. When we returned at night, there were no clean towels so I went to ask the receptionist (a night-time staff). He went and took some blue towels out, and those blue towels didn't seem clean at all.
The next day, we asked the housekeeper to come in as it seemed she might choose to skip our room if we were inside. I gave her back the blue towels and asked for some clean ones. She looked confusedly at the blue towels. Later in the afternoon, she came back and returned the blue towels because she didn't know what to do with them.
The housekeepers also don't seem to understand it's also their responsibility to clean the balcony too. The balcony had not been cleaned during our entire stay.
Another thing that I must complain is their AC system. It does get boiling at night, and the ceiling fan has one speed which gave me a headache after me sleeping underneath that.
Their breakfast was okay if you knew what to expect (which is food is horrible in Malta generally).
