Detailed Reviews
The guesthouse is good for the money, but could be a lot better. The room was small and dark, not very comfortable. The ad says that there will be free toiletries, there was only soap.
The staff was helpful and friendly and the location is very nice.Although, there are a lot of bars around the hotel, so wear earplugs if you want to sleep.

Was initially booked for 15 days, which included a free pick up service at the airport, that didn't work out, but guess that was due to miscommunication. The hotel itself is located just off "Tourist Street", within walking distance to main bus terminus in Bugibba and several restaurants and bars. There's a newly renowated nightclub / sports bar just twenty meters across the street, that can be a bit loud at times, but just close the balcony door and the noise is pretty much cancelled out. Reception however is not open 24/7, so you are well advised to keep your room key on you if you expect to be out after 19:00. Staff is very helpful, but as previously mentioned only available on phone after hours when reception is closed. Rooms are your average motel / hotel / guesthouse size, twin beds and the basic amenities such as kettle, WiFi, small wall mounted TV with a few local and international channels. All in all good value for money. Breakfast buffet is not too much to be said about, bread, eggs, sausages and bacon with coffee, tea and juice.

The first problem we had was finding the hotel, we put the co-ordinates in that were supplied by booking.com but this did not take us to the right location. After my friend had asked around a bit we eventually got direction to the hotel. When we arrived the front door was locked. The reception is only open in the morning. I had received a number of phone calls during the day from an unknown number, however as I did not recognise it I did not answer it and there was no message left on the answerphone. Eventually we phoned the number on the door and the very friendly member of staff turned up to check us in.
There rooms are up a number of steps so with your suitcases are quite awkward. It certainly is not disabled friendly. The Wifi also did not work the first night, hardly worked the second night but was working on the third night although slow. The staff however did keep calling the technician out so were trying to solve the problem.
There is still a lot of work taking place at the hotel and the hallways have been nicely done up. The bathroom had been done up but I still think there was a little work to be done. It was also rather small to move around and rather compact. The hot water did not stay hot for long and started to turn cold after only a short time in the shower so you need to be quick. The duvet on the bed is a single for a single bed, however it would be better if it was a double duvet because every time you turned the cover would come off you.
It is also winter so the hotel was also very cold at night especially as there was no heating available in the room. In the summer it would be ideal as it gets very hot but at this time of the year not great.
The hotel is located in a nice part of the island, not too far away from the coast, some nice restaurants, beach walks, shops and also a short walk to the main bus station which can take you to destinations all over the island including Valletta for one euro fifty.
I must say that the lady member of staff was fantastic, very friendly, gave us recommendations of where to go and how to do it and tried to solve the problems that we had especially the Wifi. An asset to the hotel.
At this current time I would probably not stay here again, but it is under new ownership and work is being done to improve the hotel so over time I am sure it would improve and would deserve another chance. In the summer it would be better to.

Response from Teddie524, Owner at Sunstone Guest House
Responded Jan 19, 2015
Dear Guest thanks you so much for your detailed review. We greatly value your comments. We are working with our partners to correct the exact position of our property on the map. Regarding the fact that when you arrived you found a closed door, our reception is officially open daily from 8.30am-12.30 and we have been trying to contact you via telephone, SMS, and email repeatedly to ask you your time of arrival but unfortunately we never had an answer from your side. We are really sorry that you experienced some problems with the WiFi but as you correctly said we have been in contact with our IT technician to try and solve the problem. Eventually we found out that one of our WiFi repeaters was working intermittently and not all areas of the guest house were covered completely. We thank you so much on the nice comments regarding the staff and the upgrades being done at the guest house. We look forward to see you back at the Sunstone in the future

+1
The Sunstone Guest House is a lovely traditional accomodation which had a recently refurbishment + rebranding and seems to be a perfect place to enjoy the taste of Maltese hospitality.
It is placed very close to the main street (named Triq-it-Turisti) in Bugibba/Qawra, where you’ll find restaurants and shops and only few minutes walking to the central bus station who assure connections to the whole island. There is obviously a direct bus from airport - number X3. I don’t need to rent a car because these buses are working very well and they are cheap – a full day ticket costs only 1.50 E. Anyway, when you schedule your activities, keep in mind that the bus ride can lasts more than normal because the little streets and the hills.
The Sunstone has a little terrace at street and separate entrance for the room where is served the breakfast. Another entrance is directly to the stairs who leads to the first floor where are the reception and few rooms. The second floor has others rooms and if you climb one more stair you’ll have access to the top terrace with a nice view over the city, where you can sunbathe on the lounge chairs or enjoy a coffee/drink.
I got by reservation a double room but I received a triple room at the second floor (there is no elevator), who was even better for my luggage, with a balcony and a nice bathroom.
When I’m in vacation, I spend little time in my hotel, so I prefer not to pay for luxuries, but I like to return to a clean room with a decent bathroom. In both respects, my room was exactly what I had expected.
The room was very clean, with new and modern furniture, had TV, fridge with not expensive drinks, free facilities for coffee/tea, wardrobe, night stands, looker and mirror.
The bathroom was with bathtub, free toiletries and permanently hot water thanks to a boiler.
The amenities are British style, that means you need a dedicated plug (it costs around 2.5 Euro at any shop but probable you can ask for a piece at reception) and you’ll have to use separate taps for hot and cold water. As for me, I can't understand this British system for the washbasin’ water.
The balcony was small but adequate, overlooking the street.
The breakfast buffet had sufficient variety for a good start of the day at the price of 4 Euro.
The WIFI works excellent, both in the room, balcony, bathroom and in the breakfast room at ground floor.
The strongest advantage of this pension is the incredible friendship and attention of the staff: Teddie, who is the owner and Eve, who most of the time are there, both of them taking care of everything and did their best for us in order to have an unforgettable stay at Sunstone. I always prefer and i stayed in many dozen of pensions or small hotels across all Europe and I’m happy to meet so kind and friendly people as Teddie and Eve. It was very nice for our first experience in Malta to feel such a warm welcome during our stay and I regret it was only a short vacation.
Once again, a big plus for the high level of the hospitality.

Day one, bloodstains on the duvet, fishmoth in the bed, fan hanging off the wall, bad smell emanating from the basin due to no S bend on basin, broken toilet roll holder and the shower has exposed electrics right above the shower head! Was told no other rooms available and upgrade would cost more money. Day two, no-one at unmanned front desk, so I called several times throughout the day to have bedding replaced - no answer. Got in late, same bedding was on bed again, towels were wet and unchanged, bad smell again and no soap or shampoo in the washing facility. So I spent a second night fully clothed without a duvet. Day three I left a note asking for bedding to be changed, got in at around 10 to find door hanger to turn over room still on door, and nothing touched in the room. I found the owner downstairs and made him change the bed, bring fresh towels and bring soap and shampoo. He ended up bringing just a duvet inner with no cover. The whole experience was rubbish, I will never stay here again and I am a frequent flier, this was my 40th visit in 3 years to Malta. I would appreciate a refund if management care enough about their clients, but from the service I received, I very much doubt that will happen.

The only real positive fact about our stay was the kind and efficient service we got from the housekeeper, Ms Sharon Crosby. For the rest...
a) no good information on how to get there, they wanted to know when we would arrive, but didn't even tell us where to get off the bus, so we got off too soon and walked half through the city of Qawra/Bugibba.
b) we only saw the hosts at the check-in moment and afterwards we were most alone, as we never saw any other guests (only heard them...). All communications were made by phone – they suppose you don't mind using your cell phone for international calls.
c) we were first given a room on the second floor (no lift), where water was pouring in at the closed window from the rain outside.
d) our next room had several problems in the bathroom: shower attachment was upside down; the toilet pot was damaged and the toilet seat had a split that would grab your skin when you sat down (we reported it to the owner -by phone of course- but they didn't do anything about it); hot water available for 1 shower only, let alone a bath; the hot water faucet was loose;
e) no heating, we kind of confiscated the heater that was in the reception and had to pay extra for it.
f) there was a long staircase to the first floor, at a certain point, the railing ran too close to the wall, so if you didn't look out, you'd hurt your fingers.
g) as an extra complement, breakfast was to be taken in a big hotel round the corner, and it was quite awful.
Why did we stay there? Simple: we had paid in advance for a week!

I stayed here in April 2016 for 2 nights. I booked through a popular booking app and got a good price. Everything was straight forward and when I arrived I was expected. Upon arrival I received the warmest of welcomes and was shown to a single room at the rear of the hotel up a flight of stairs next door to the reception. The room itself was small, compact and opened onto a little terrace at the back. Clean, tidy, water and tea and coffee making facilities. TV worked, WIFI excellent, Shower hot and powerful. All in all, the room was great - not a complaint at all.
I was milling about and was invited by owner Teddie and staff member Eve to have a coffee and a chat. As a lone wolf (so to speak grr!) This was something which set this hotel apart - the personal touch. I travel throughout Europe regularly alone and sometimes its nice for someone to give you the time of day and a cup of coffee and a chat - its priceless actually !
Here's the important bits:-
- 5 minute walk into the centre for all of the restaurants/beach/nightlife etc.
- 5 mins walk to bus station on the top road (not the beach road - 10 mins this way)
- Comfy bed - great nights sleep x2 !!
- Air Con
- Although there is a nightclub/late bar across the road, I never heard anything from it,
- Fellow guests could be heard a little in the next room and upon coming up and down the stairs but this was ok - its was not bad at all.
- the walk to and from the centre was easy, I felt safe and it was busy most of the time
- Customer service and customer satisfaction was important to the owners - excellent!
- Very clean.
- Wifi Worked as it should - I say this as lots of places are still in the dark ages even in 2016!
- I didn't have breakfast here, but the breakfast room looked clean and tidy
In conclusion I have stayed in bigger hotels and guest houses which are not in the same class as this place so if you like good value for money, a great location, amazing service and the personal touch from the owners and staff then this is your place. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this little gem!

We had a very pleasant staying in the end of February beginning of March for 4 nights. Spacious and clean room with a balcony. Rich breakfast and excellent service! Just a few meters away from the bust station. Eve, at the reception, was very kind and helpful and made our staying very very pleasant, both with her service and advice. Thank you, Eve!!! When in Malta again we will definitely stay in Sunstone Guesthouse

This lovely restaurant is tucked away in the heart of Bugibba and unless you know about it, it is unlikely you will just find it. But I must say it is worth looking for!
Had a lovely dinner, the food is incredible and very reasonably priced! Dinner for 2 and a toddler: 1 mixed starter, 3 main meat dishes, 1 rice dish, 2 portions of the best naan bread ever, 1 full bottle of Chianti, bottle of sparkling water (and a poppadom) for just Eur58. Portions are generous and couldn't get through all the food even though we really tried!.
The service here is also fantastic, warm, professional staff and owner make the overall experience an unforgettable one. Totally recommended for the lovers of genuine Indian food!

If you know what’s good for you avoid room 205 like it has a deadly disease. Worst room I’ve ever stayed in ! There are a couple of nice rooms in the hotel but overall it’s very much at the bottom of the pile in comparison to other hotels in the area.
