Special atmosphere, spectacular setting. Nice old school rooms and a good restaurant that offers a bit of style at a reasonable price. The lounge area looking out at the mountains is hard to beat anywhere, don't sit alone in he dark though...think 'The Shining" :-)

An extraordinary building in an extraordinary landscape. The restaurant has a few straight across the bowling green lawn to the volcano. Order the high tea. Excellent value at about $25 NZ. Delicious cakes and tiny sandwiches and everything you would expect for high tea.

Chateau Tongariro is a sight to behold when you are arriving down the road and catching your first glimpse. The area is mountains and volcanoes and it is an unlikely place for such an elegant old hotel. Although it is an older property with lots of nooks and crannies, it has a lovely atmosphere, a place it feels good to...

We stayed here for a wedding. It is a lovely old building. Our room wasent ready on check in but when we got there it was lovely. The dinner was brilliant at the reception. The eye fillet was scrumptious. The pool looked really cool but sadly I didn't get a chance to have a dip. Buffet breakfast was epic. Ate...

Elegant from the moment you enter. Lovely checkin staff. Very helpful and obliging. Location is fantastic for all that Tongarairo has to offer. Nice large rooms that have windows that open. Down side to the room is the tiniest fridge I have ever seen. Not very functional at all. They really need realise not everyone wants to eat their buffet...

Stayed for one night and would have liked to stay for two as the walking nearby was great, we walked the ridge and to Tongariro waterfall which were both amazing. The hotel has a wonderful old colonial feel and great ambiance it feels like stepping back into the 1920's. However several aspects made us feel it needed improvements to help...

Nice location. Nice communal areas. For the price it is fairly far down the list of what you can get in terms of quality in NZ. Also very loud. Don't expect a good sleep! However to be honest a good motel is better value.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this lovely, historic hotel in a truly beautiful setting. Even in the rain and fog of our arrival day it was still beautiful. Staff was welcoming and friendly. We could not see any of the mountains but the hotel itself was beautiful. Our room in the Rupaheu Wing was compact and...

We stayed for two nights to do the Tongariro crossing, and really enjoyed it here. Our room (which had been refurbished) was excellent, as was the hotel generally. We ate in the cafe/bistro both nights and the food was good and the service excellent. Overall, very impressed. Would definitely go back. If it had a failing at all it was...

I would have loved to have stayed here, but we were only visiting for High Tea. The most wonderful experience. Elegant and genteel surroundings and a proper and very filling high tea. What a wonderful way of finishing our visit to Whakapapa. A unique hotel.
