I am very impressed that there is affordable accommodation actually on the mountain. All the necessary amenities are there including an awesome view. The staff are friendly and helpful and don't seem to treat the backpacker customers any different to the hotel guests.

Best ask at the big store where bus will prob drop you off, where is best place to thumb a lift to Whakapapa. Its not that far, just a few kilometers, will be other people travelling up to the chateau and the skotel for sure, just hold up a sign, be plenty people go there.
