Great location for a hotel, and much more relaxed than others locally. Agree with others that it has a slightly dated feel, but staff were very friendly and helpful and the room large enough for the three of us, and comfortable. Food reasonably priced considering where it is, views amazing - so lucky to have blue sky days and snow...

Room a bit dated. At first glance I thought my night's sleep would be less than satisfying but I slept well. The food was very good and the staff was accommodating. Hiking just outside your door. Lower level room had a very nice group patio area and individual patio areas. Perfect rooms for a group traveling together BUT if alone...

We booked a two night stay hoping to do the Tongariro Crossing however the weather had other ideas. Apparently the view from this hotel is amazing however the mist, rain and snow descended and we could barely see ten metres ahead! We stayed in the backpacker side of the lodge in a private double. The room was pretty small, basic...

Please get Tongariro Crossing Package. It's $400 for 2 nights that include the transportation for the hike, breakfast, lunch for the hike, then $40 off dinner! We had Room #5 Chalet, all to ourselves. The view was just as good as the neighbor hotel: Cheatau. They were so courteous, helped me setting up Wi Fi, only $5. That's not bad...

I had a very good night sleep at this hotel after the Tongariro crossing. The rooms are clean and the common kitchen is spaciuos and tidy. The service is friendly and the restaurant is excellent. Common Showers and toilets are great

I stayed with my family of 2 young kids after Xmas. Pity we could only stay one night as we had a tight travel schedule. We were in the lodge side and the view was breathtaking as we could see Mt Nguaruhoe aka Mt Doom in LOTR from our room. It was only a 6km drive up to the chair...

We took the hike package that inckuded almost all the meals and transportation. I thought the hotel was first class, my frieend thought that it needed a little fresh paint. The hiking is the reason to go in summer, nothing else around.

We had a lovely room with the view of Mt. Nguaruhoe. We were there only for two days so can't say much. I found the staff friendly and helpful. Amazing location, great views. I would advise anyone who wishes to stay there to go for a queen size room and not the cabin.

I recently stayed here as part of a G Adventures tour around NZ. We were meant to do the Tongariro crossing but unfortunately the weather was too bad. The hotel was nice enough - the rooms looked a bit tired but were perfectly serviceable. The food in the restaurant was fine and the bar was cosy.

I am shocked by the number of positive reviews on this place. We stayed here for 2 nights last week to do the Tongariro crossing. I agree with previous reviewers that its a great location with amazing views and the staff was friendly & helpful. However, the cabin we stayed in was barely inhabitable. There were wear spots and rips...

The cabins certainly need upgrading. Since July 2012 we have been negotiating with the Department of Conservation for a longer lease to justify a major upgrade. In the process we have spent over $10,000 on reports. Their latest email promises an answer within the next 4 weeks. In the meantime some more minor refurbishment is being undertaken. All of our...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
