So why might others give the place a lower rating? Old motels have relatively thin walls and, while the motel is limited in its control of inconsiderate guests, they can get too loud for some people's taste. In this case, it sounded like someone next door threw something against the wall - twice. At least it wasn't their three year old, whose voice I heard at 1 AM! It didn't take very loud conversation for it to carry through the walls, but these yahoos didn't even TRY to keep their voices low in the middle of the night. Despite that, I got a fairly good night's rest.
BTW, there is no comparing the Scenic River to other lodgings in town since it is the only one in Wartburg. If you need more modern accommodations, with the possibility of thicker walls, try Harriman, 16 miles south. However, Frozen Head State Park and the Obed Wild & Scenic River are in Wartburg, and the Big South Fork NRRA is 34 miles north, so Wartburg is pretty handy to the tourist attraction of the area.
Pros: Managers very nice, rooms clean, weekly rates are good, motel is close to stores and restaurants.
Cons:Managers do not speak or understand english well, shower stalls in single rooms are too small, walls have no insulation so plan on hearing the neighbors talking and watching tv all night, there is no "scenic" or "river" anywhere near motel. It is located between two main roads and next to a Rite-Aid.
I didnt mind staying there by myself while working, but would not take my family there.

I booked a hotel room at this location for my daughter via Hotels.com at a rate of $34/night for 2 nights, 23-24/Aug/2024. I paid at the time of booking via PayPal and received a receipt for such. Upon her arrival, the desk clerk would not accept the receipt, claimed their was no reservation, refused the proof of booking, refused the receipt and then charged over $60/night at the desk. My daughter had to pay again or have nowhere to stay for 2 nights. I contacted Hotels.com. They contacted the parent property OYO. OYO said that the property cancelled the reservation-but i didn't notice OR get a refund. They falsely advertise on multiple platforms, hotels.com, OYO, kayak and the like, a double queen room for $34/night + tax.
2. They accepted payment at time of online reservation then without warning or notice cancel the reservation AND keep the money. (I also just read a review where the same thing happened to another LADY traveling alone).
When my daughter arrived she was told no reservation was placed and the desk clerk would not accept the payment receipt with transaction ID thus leaving my daughter stranded and forced to pay again at a rate double the advertised amount.
This property charged double the advertised rate AND kept the original $103.30 as well. I looked on multiple sites and $34 -$38.00 is the advertised rate.
Either the property themselves or the desk clerk is running a scam and it should be stopped. It appears as if they joined with OYO hotels for their name and exposure then cancel the reservations, charge double, then in the end get triple the rate because they do not refund the initial payments. If the advertised rate was a posting error on just Hotels.com, $34/night wouldn't show on other booking sites and my daughter may have been asked to pay the difference not double the whole thing. And at the time of this posting, 14 days post- stay, the individual property AND OYO parent company have refused to respond to inquiries made by me, hotels.com or TN Better Business Bureau one can’t even pull up the hotel on the PARENT OYO site so that speaks volumes.
As for the room, there was no evidence of bed bugs but it was definitely run down. My daughter was visiting there for a wedding. The mess with the front desk made her late for the rehearsal too. Bait and switch tactics and credit card fraud are both illegal. Stay away!

"Do not stay in room 4. Its next to the office, so you not only get to hear tv's and talking all night, but also get to hear the managers dog barking. Get one of the non smoking "double" rooms on the the ends of the motel. The rooms seems to be better insulated and the bathrooms are huge."Read full review
