We stayed at Ballpate Inn in late July. I love historic hotels and lodges and have stayed in many; they all provided good property descriptions on their websites. Not so with Ballpate Inn.

We stayed here in August and according to one of the employees we spoke to, many of the summer staff had already left that week, so I think they were running with a skeleton crew. Nonetheless...boy howdy were there some cleanliness and maintenance issues.
The Inn itself is a master class in Historic Rustic (yes, the floors are slanted and, for most rooms, the bathroom's down the hall!). We spent hours wandering from room to room - enjoying the blazing fire in the lobby, the cozy den stocked to...More

I overheard them telling someone that they prefer reservations so that they can plan accordingly. They have a large dining area but the lodging and those overnight residents create the major workload for the crew of young staff. Breakfast is included if you stay overnight and the day I was there it was very busy. I think lunch or dinner is not as crowded. If you are in the area and want to have a meal there I would recommend a reservation to be safe.

"Maybe consider staying in the lodge rather than the cabins."
