When we first arrived it was a bit busy. And valet guys were not helpful. One guy stood out and was really helpful. At first our room wasn't ready and rocky helped up with it luggage and put it away so we can come back to it while we went to eat. Good guy. Very respectful and was very polite. He helped us get out the parking lot when it was full of vehicles.
Very well kept. Beautiful room. Delicious morning coffee. Polite bell persons. Nice clean pool. Comfortable pool chairs. Great historic pictures throughout that made us want to spend a day just going around looking at and reading them.
I couldn't have planned a more lovely getaway away but I can't take the credit it was all set up by my husband. We have been to the beautiful Hotel many times and enjoyed their wonderful brunches on the weekend . Our several days stay at this beautiful hotel was only made better by the wonderful staff and their contributions to make it more special. For our convenience they upgraded us to a beautiful suite. The Food and the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic….. Thank you!
We stayed here in April 2021 for three nights. After researching for weeks we chose this hotel because of the history. How often can you stay in the oldest continuously operated hotel west of the Mississippi River? If you have an interest in history, this hotel is spectacular. It is right next to the Alamo. I mean right next to it. Walk out the door and there it is. We spent each of the three nights sitting in the Alamo Plaza just talking and looking at the Alamo. It was quiet and peaceful and we felt mostly alone. The Menger is a beautiful old hotel with the most incredible Victorian lobby. There is an amazing old grandfather clock and the walls are lined with historical photos, stories, and memorabilia. We stayed in the old part of the hotel and had a room that overlooked the mall next door. The view was non descript and you could hear the people outside talking. That said, we never felt like the sounds of the neighborhood made it difficult to sleep. The room is small, but that is to be expected in an old hotel. The bed was comfortable and we did sleep just fine, but it did seem like the mattress was super old. You'd sit on it and the mattress just collapsed--again this didn't detract at all from our experience--which surprised me as I have back problems and often can't sleep well away from home. One day we ate breakfast at the Colonial Restaurant. The room was beautiful, the staff was excellent. The meal was nothing special. A more expensive Denny's experience. We had a drink at the Menger Bar. We went for the experience and to say we were where Teddy Roosevelt had been. The upstairs area of the bar has really steep stairs, if you are mobility impaired I would recommend just skipping the upstairs. An unexpected surprise was the giant table right outside the elevator on the 3rd floor lobby. We used this table to play board games each night. The guests were so friendly and would always say hello as they walked past. Due to the road construction that was going on, we had to use valet parking. The valet desk was very helpful and friendly. The weekend was very backed up with the valet service and it took a long time to get your car, but this was posted everywhere in the hotel and was not a surprise at all. My only complaint was that none of the ice machines were working. I have permanent injuries that cause me to need to ice knee and back and I could never find ice and a neighboring room said they had the same problem, but that they were given ice by the front desk. I would recommend the Menger Hotel to anyone who has an affinity for history. It was a wonderful and romantic experience.…
Went for breakfast on sunday morning… we passed by and saw this magnificent building right next to The Alamo and though well it looks high end and promising, they must serve an exquisite breakfast… what a disappointment. The stewardess was not extremely transparent, we arrived at 10.20am she offered us the breakfast (served as per the menu till 11am) buffet but she did not mention that it was being cleared at 10.30am, after that you get nothing as they prepare their brunch buffet… a scam… The choice is very poor, quality under-average.
