Hotel's Favourite
This was our second stay at the Earthbox, and we wouldn't look anywhere else if visiting Friday Harbor. This beautiful Inn is an easy walk up the hill from the ferry terminal. We had kayaking reservations so arrived in the morning, but the helpful staff was more than willing to help store our luggage until later. Housekeeping staff was just as friendly and helpful as the people at the front desk. We were on the island to see our kids working there; on the one chilly day we all fully enjoyed the hot tub, pool and sauna! A stellar spot to stay in Friday Harbor!

A friend and I stayed here recently after deciding to make a trip to Friday Harbor for a whale watch tour. Here are the Pros and Cons:
Pro:
Front desk staff were kind and helpful and allowed us to check in early as our room was ready. Complimentary coffee/hot water with tea/cider packets at the lobby/check-in desk.
Using a code to get into your room instead of a room key was great. I wish more hotels used this feature.
Pool and jacuzzi: the pool was heated and the jacuzzi was also just the right temperature. Both are located indoor which is nice in the event that the weather is rainy/chilly.
Crow's Nest Cafe: It's an outside setting with beautiful flowers/plants and plenty of seating options. So convenient (right next to the entrance to the pool and jacuzzi and next door to the lobby) and close to the building we stayed in. Lots of coffee options as well as smoothies, plus muffins, bagels and gluten-free cookies. Their main location is located on Spring Street near the ferry docks.
Con:
Quiet hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I could understand 10:00 p.m. for the beginning of the quiet hours, but 8:00 p.m.? My friend and I were talking - (not loudly) and watching tv (again, not loud at all), but another guest lodged a complaint that we were being too loud. I think the walls are thin as we could hear another guest above us, but it didn't bother us. Didn't see anything on their website alerting us to the quiet hours, so this came as a total surprise. We are not the party type - and prefer quiet, but normal conversational speech and a tv volume barely above a whisper, should not be a reason for another guest to complain. That's why I think the walls are thin and need a re-do!
My friend reserved the Sea Place Room with two queens, kitchen, dining table and vaulted ceilings for the top floor and she was notified ahead of time that there would be stairs (no elevator) with small balcony. Instead, we were given a different room type (Earth Place room). This was on the first floor and smaller, no kitchen (there was a mini fridge and a keurig, however). When we called the front desk to mention the discrepancy, they said that this was all that they had available. For $350.00/night, it didn't seem to be worth the price.

Hi Bunnyrabbit115, Thank you so much for your visit and for taking the time to let us know about your experience. We appreciate it. We are so happy you loved our staff, check-in process, the pool house and our cute, seasonal coffee shop as well as that we were able to grant you an early check-in. We want to make our place comfy and relaxing for everyone. A couple of friends have different needs than a young family with a baby. That's how we came up with our quiet hours. Thank you so much for understanding. Your travel partner acknowledged our quiet hours when filling out the guest agreement. Is it possible that there was a bit of miscommunication between your travel partner and you about the room reserved? We don't offer the rooms you are describing. Our Sea Places have a kitchen and are all on the ground floor. Our upstairs Sun Places have vaulted ceilings and a balcony. We never switch room styles on guests, unless there is an emergency? Yes, being on an island is expensive. Just think that everything from pillow to gasoline needs to be shipped or flown over. In addition wages, property, taxes and utilities, especially drinking water are a lot more expensive than on the mainland. You'll see that reflected in our room rates. Please come back sometime, maybe in the off-season when we offer amazing specials and you have the beaches to yourself? We would love a chance to really WOW you! ~Steffi

We stayed in the Earthbox Inn and Spa in Friday Harbor for three nights. The Earthbox is a renovated motel. Someone spent time upgrading the decor and amenities, plus adding a spa and indoor fitness area including a heated pool. We didn’t use any of the facilities or spa so I can’t speak to that. Our room was a single queen on the first floor. It was a very small room. Oddly, everything was small. The refrigerator is the smallest of dorm style we have seen in our travels, as were the coffee cups and glasses. Everything seemed mini. The cost at over $210 (before discounts which are frequently offered and which we received) did not match the room we got. Plus, the view was of the parking lot so I don’t get the price point. It’s not worth $200+ a night.
On arrival, we asked if we could move to a double queen or King to get more space but was told they were sold out for the 3 nights we stayed here. I checked online and noted 2 of the nights appeared to have available rooms but I didn’t pursue it further. Other exchanges via text only with staff were helpful.
The location was central to everything in town and an easy walk to the harbor.

Hi Luv2TravelNY15, Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your stay. Yes, we are a retro motor inn. It's the first sentence on our website. We - a small, family owned business - are the proud "someone" who spend time every Winter to renovate, upgrade, put in more gardens, buy new furniture, select new art and make things better and cuter in general. We are so happy you liked it. Our Water Places are our tiniest rooms, perfect for the single or budget traveler. I can see how they are snug for a multi day stay. I'm so sorry we didn't have another room available for you. Let's make sure we get you in a vast room you can dance in with full size fridge next time, yes? Being located on an island is expensive. Everything from pillow to nail to coffee to gas needs to be shipped or flown over. In addition property, taxes, wages and utilities, especially drinking water, are so much more than on the mainland. You'll see that reflected in your room rate. It's like Hawaii, but with salmon and cedar:) Please come back some time and get a massage at our adorable on-site spa and check out the pool house. I think you would love our Sea or Sun Places. Until then ~Steffi

We picked Earthbox In specifically because they have a heated indoor pool, as we were traveling with kids. Our experience was exceptional! Clean, spacious rooms and an easy self-check in process. They accommodated our requests for early check-in, as well as late check out which was greatly appreciated as we have special needs family members.
Sonja in the office was helpful and knowledgeable of the town. Also, Kitti in housekeeping went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable and welcome during our stay.
The location couldn't of been more convenient, and we loved the restaurants we tried within easy walking distance. JP's was particularly great, and located right across the street from Earthbox.
We are already planning our next trip to Friday Harbor and Earthbox, and looking forward to trying their rooms with kitchenette next!

Perfect location around the corner from the Friday Harbor ferry station; it’s quiet, but also walking distance from cute shops and good restaurants. We were traveling with a pet, and the hosts were very welcoming. There were food and water bowls and treats in our room when we arrived, and the pet walking area was easy to find. On my next visit to San Juan I will stay here again and also check out the spa.

This is our 2nd year staying at the Earthbox Inn and it was just as pleasant and trouble free as our 1st stay. We were in one of the "Earth" rooms that was nicely remodeled with vinyl wood flooring and a quiet wall mounted air conditioner. This was a pet friendly room which accommodated our lab. The shower water pressure as good, WiFi speed was good enough to stream videos (7 mbps down, 3 mbps up), the mini fridge worked great, and the Keurig coffee maker was good for morning coffee. The property grounds were also clean and pleasant to walk around with all the flowering plants. A nice surprise was having daily maid cleaning service again (unlike most other hotels). My family had a very comfortable stay, and I would definitely stay here again!

We had an awesome stay here last week!
The room was perfect, the staff were incredibly helpful with ideas for places to eat and visit, and the pool, hot tub, and sauna were welcome additions after a day of hiking.
Our dog-friendly room came with lots of room for us and our critter, and they provided dog bowls, mats, and a doggie towel (just in case).
We loved that it is located a few short blocks from the ferry and downtown Friday Harbor shopping and dining.
We also really appreciated that they were staying open during the off-season (several other lodgings and eateries were shut down). I know it's a hardship to do so, and I told them how much we appreciated their being there.

The staff is wonderful! Our room was very clean and welcoming. After chatting with the front desk I quickly learned that the new owner and staff at this hotel have a, “Please give us feedback so we can improve and make this place even better” attitude. I inquired about adding some coat hooks and room darkening curtains-they are already in the process of installing the coat hooks. I got the impression that the management and staff operate like a seamless team. I felt valued and appreciated. Great place, great people.

Great hotel. Perfect location. Super easy & convenient check in! The staff were very friendly & attentive and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Property was well maintained and had lots of beautiful flowers, plants and gorgeous trees that were lit up at night. Our room was very comfortable and spacious for the two of us. I was a bit concerned about noise from reading previous reviews but had no problem at all (and we were on the bottom floor)! The Keurig and coffee pods they provided were the perfect way to start the day. The hot tub was a great way to end the day after a long hike and the laundry facilities on site were much appreciated. Can't wait to visit again!!

My family stayed here for 3 nights in July, and we had a wonderful stay. The hotel is just a few blocks from the ferry terminal so we were within walking distance to several shops and restaurants. A perfect location to use as a base camp for exploring the island.
Because of COVID, the hotel staff communicated to us via text messages which was very effective. They responded quickly, and were very friendly and courteous. The entire check in process was contactless. The hotel grounds were very well kept with flowers and nicely trimmed lawns. Just like you see on their web site.
Since we had a dog (Lab) on our trip, we were given a ground floor room with wood laminate flooring. The room was surprisingly spacious, which added to our comfortable stay. Super clean and fresh with a microwave oven, Kurieg coffee maker, and small fridge (which was super cold). Although our room was adjacent to the laundry and ice maker room, we didn't have any noise issues. In fact, with the air conditioner unit fan turned on it acted as white noise and we didn't hear anything all night. The only negative I experienced was low water pressure for the shower head. It wasn't too bad, but I would have liked higher pressure.
The wifi speed was good at 18 mbps download and 4 mbps upload (although my AT&T cellular connection was much faster). Although the room price was expensive, I would stay here again if I visited San Juan Island in the future.

I didn’t experience anything you are asking about. Sorry wrong reviewer
We at the Earthbox Inn & Spa provide bike helmets upon request and always if you are under 18 (it's the law). Please know that our bikes are beach cruisers - awesome, fun, single speed bikes, great for around town and to the nearest beach, but not suited as your only transportation around our very hilly island. Can't wait to see you soon!
We love four legged guests, especially the cute, well behaved ones. Dogs are welcome in designated pet rooms only, so make sure you reserve a pet friendly room. We charge a $15 pet fee per pup per night. We are looking forward to your visit!
