Nestled in a coveted location with stunning water views, Newport Harbor Island Resort is hailed for its proximity to local shops and eateries. While some guests have applauded the hotel's cleanliness and the friendly staff, others have voiced concerns, citing outdated decor, noise disturbances, and instances of slow service. The pet-friendly policy and shuttle services are popular, yet many reviewers warn that the resort's value is diminished by overpricing and inconsistent room amenities. Despite its scenic setting, the hotel's need for updates is a recurring theme among travelers.

We were sailing in the area and wanted to stop for a couple nights in Newport. Gurney’s was amazing! From Shawn and Cole at the dock who helped us find a slip to Eric and Luke at the front desk to David the GM of the resort for five years — they were so welcoming and friendly and responsive! Super nice property. Highlights were the views of the sailboat races in the Narragansett, walking to town for shopping and dinner — it’s a great location. They have bikes too. They also have live music at the weekends. Crispy chicken sandwich by the pool is delicious and they make excellent lattes at the coffee shop. We had a great room with a pretty view. Thank you Gurney’s! 👍👍

Just checked out after a 2 night stay in a Narragansett view room. Overall it was a very nice stay. The facilities were nicely updated since last time I had visited and it was still under the Hyatt ownership. All the food and drinks from the restaurants we had were very good although it does take some advanced planning because reservations are required. One thing I thought was a little odd was taking drinks to go from the Pineapple restaurant by the pool. Each time you wanted a drink, you had to wait in line at the hostess stand for a number, give your full name and phone number and then approach the bar to order and pay. I would understand this if there was a huge demand but there was never a line to order and no use for needing the phone number since they just had you wait off to the side then called out your number. They did a nice job arranging the lawn chairs over the lawn overlooking all the water so that the pool was available for quick swims only. I actually preferred the location of the lawn chairs on the grass rather than in the enclosed pool area and hope they keep this option even after COVID. The pool was nice on the first day we were there but looked a little murky the second day we were there so we avoided it. I overheard one of the employees saying it needed to be shocked but they were waiting to do it overnight. Our room was spacious and had a beautiful view of the bridge especially at sunset. The bathroom could use some updating but was clean. Similar to what other people have mentioned though, the walls are extremely thin. We had to call the front desk in the middle of the night due to some very noisy neighbors. They responded appropriately by sending security although it didn’t really seem to help the noise but that’s not really their fault. I would overall recommend this resort. It’s really one of the only places to stay in Newport that has a vacation/resort feel with all the amenities!

Let me start off by saying I consider our standards pretty high. Under normal circumstances we spend our summer vacation staying a week at Disney World. This year we decided to stay some what local and take a couple of nights in Newport. We arrived around 12:30pm and were delighted to see a room was ready for us with an upgrade. The front desk associate was 5 stars. This is pretty much where it ended. We went to our room and noticed that the 'sofa bed' where our son would sleep, did not have any bedding for it. We called the front, desk as we were instructed to do if we needed anything, and they said they would send someone up because it was 'tricky'. We then went down to the pool area. The pool was full so we could not go sit there so we opted to sit at one of the chairs on the lawn and went to get drinks at the pool bar. The $45 for one smoothy and 2 planter punches were the worst drinks we have ever had. We couldn't even drink them. Later after taking a walk in town, which was a quick walk over the bridge, and returning we still did not have the bedding for the 'sofa bed' so I had to call down to the front desk again. Housekeeping came up and did have a difficult time assembling it. Housekeeping went to 'make the bed' but I stopped her nicely because she did not put on gloves and I was very uncomfortable with her making my sons bedding without them on. I made the bed myself, which by the way which was rock hard and very uncomfortable. There is no mattress, just an extension of the sofa. That evening we went to Scarpetta for dinner. We have been to the one in Miami and it was one of my all time favorite restaurants. The Scarpetta at Gurneys was no where near the same. The food was ok but not worth $300+ for 3 of us, the service was awful, and my husbands drink had a hair in it. Other than all this we had the same wine glasses sitting outside our room door from the time we arrived until the time we left. Does housekeeping or management not see this? The hotel itself is run down and needs some TLC. If we return to Newport we will not be staying at Gurneys.

I booked 3 balcony water view rooms none had a balcony, and of course none were available when I checked in. One room the window was so small could not see anything. Of course they blamed Covid. The pool was over crowded and lounges were not available for all guests. Although I paid for 3 rooms 5 adults I was only allowed 4 chairs. Of course they blamed covid. The pool manager threatened that he would only hold chairs for 15 minutes while we ate breakfast at the pricey sea salt restaurant. $180.00. The restaurant reserves tables for outside guests and in turn reserve deck seating for them, so if you want to sit and have a cocktail before or after dinner there is no where to sit I was told by the front desk that to get a after dinner cocktail I would have to go to my room, order room service, wait for it to be delivered then bring it down to the lobby to drink. (Can’t make this up) of course this was blamed on Covid.
So I say. If they can only be at 50% capacity then they should be able to accommodate 50 or 100% of their paying guests. Not dinner guests at restaurant.
Also, other than wearing masks in lobby and hand sanitizer I did not see any staff disinfecting and wiping down any chairs or counter tops no sanitizing of the elevator buttons or bathrooms or any surface that many people touch. At the pool the procedure was to spray the lounge chair then put a clean towel on it without wiping down the chair or rubbing in the spray I observed one guest watch this happen and when the pool staff walked away she actually wiped the lounge herself.
Of course it is all blamed on Covid. If they cannot do it right then they should not have opened. Prior to this trip I went to another seaside town in NJ and they followed all Covid guide lines and it was pleasurable

(Please Read Entire Review). My experience at Gurneys was overall very disappointing I find it extremely hard paying full prices for poor condition of hotel and lack of available services. Having said that please expect to pay high prices and a $40 dollar a day hotel fee which I was told was to maintain the pool and give me access to cold water bottles during the day. I will say however that the staff that works there deserves a Medal for trying to maintain this hotel. All of them were wearing masks, even in the extreme heat, and they did not hesitate to try and accommodate you as best they could. My room consisted of a king bed with water view. There was mold on the shower walls and floor, and my water view was obstructed by the hotel roof but still it was a water view. The real issue was the pool. There was black mold along the entire inside of the pool and an unknown substance floating in the corner. I stayed for two days with temperatures reaching above 90 degrees and did not enter the pool once because of the condition. I asked about the pool and was told the water was safe to swim in and they check it 6 times a day. (See my pictures) The wait time to get drinks by the pool exceeded 40 minutes at times. This in my opinion was because they only had one bartender making drinks for the restaurant and the pool guests. If you do plan on going here please make reservations for any of the restaurants a week ahead of time as it is almost impossible to get a table (70 persons Waiting list). I try to give the most fair and accurate reviews of all my trips and believe me I am considering the Pandemic and the impact it has had on hotels.
The highlight of my trip was my dinner at Scarpetta. What makes a great dinner is obviously the food, but what brings that experience to the next level is the waiter. I cannot say enough about our waiter Srdan. In my opinion he should get employee of the year. He consistently went above and beyond his job description to give us a first-class experience or last night there.
I would stay at this hotel again based on my experiences, but I would have no issue attending Dinner at Scarpetta.

I will start on a positive note, the views and the location are amazing! But that is the best part of this hotel. The bad, this hotel seems to value a large public crowd over their hotel guests (even during covid). The restaurants were fully booked the entire weekend and mostly by non hotel guests, anyone can enter and use the amenities they do not check key cards or anything. So you can just walk up and grab chairs/ towels and even use their water activities, also parking is free and open to the public. Honestly it probably makes more sense to just get a nearby airbnb and hang out at the resort for free. It just baffles me that hotel guests are paying such a premium and they get no special treatment at all, and the rooms are just average. I recommend hanging out at the hotel but Definitely do not recommend staying there. If you do I suggest making restaurant reservations before you book the hotel, or you might be just eating room service.

My family and I arrived at Gurney’s last week and were unfortunately, disappointed. We feel that the property is not managing COVID well and it seems management is out of sync. We came across a few very friendly, awesome staff members and a few not so friendly.

I am not normally one to complain but my family spent a lot of money to be there and before moving to conjoining rooms - The hotel rooms were dirty: dust everywhere and un-vaccumed floors, dirty air vents and a large clump of hair found in the shower drain. Additionally (and most disturbingly) my mom literally stepped in dog fecal matter when getting into the elevator on day 1. The elevator reeked of poop and upon further inspection there was dog poo on the ground.

Upon talking to the front desk about all of this, they did not offer to clean, nor did they apologize for what we found as unacceptable.

Amidst a pandemic, we were surprised to hear the hotel is nearly SOLD OUT. The front desk manager, Jeff was able to upgrade our rooms to conjoin on day 2 which was huge and changed our whole vibe!

We called last week to learn more about the pool situation and ensure we could sit poolside and were told there shouldn’t be an issue (whole reason we chose Gurney’s ) and to our lovely surprise, pool opens at 8 and upon arriving at 8:10 - no more day beds were available for the day. We quickly realized we wouldn’t be spending the week at the pool and would be sitting on the lawn, which was actually peaceful and beautiful.

On a positive note, the property is beautiful and most of the staff are friendly. We had a great dinner at scarpetta with amazing staff and incredibly delicious food.

Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina is located on Goat Island just a quick walk from the transportation center, restaurants, and shopping, and short drive to most other attractions and eateries in the area. Our favorite part of the resort was the grounds and sitting on the Adirondack chairs by the water watching the sailboats. My husband enjoyed swimming in the heated pool. One will pay $40 per day for these amenities. Our room, a Narragansett Water view King Balcony was located on the third (top) floor of one section of the hotel. The view from our room was lovely and the sunsets were spectacular. The king bed was very comfortable and there were a couple long mirrors in the room. Unfortunately, the room and bathroom are in much need of an update. The decor is dull, and the shower although a nice size with new glass door, was half finished. Some of the tile and grout are nasty looking. I was really surprised at the condition. Also the hallway was rather dimly lit. Fortunately, we used the stairs to get to the third floor and that area was well lit and in very good condition. Self parking is free; however, there is a charge for valet day or overnight parking $20/$35 per day. We were able to check in early and the reception staff were friendly and helpful.

writing this review in full appreciation of of the covid environment. Still, Gurneys newport is not worth the price.

Stayed at the hotel this past weekend with my girlfriend. on arriving to the hotel 30 mins after the stated check in time of 3pm was told "they are just about finished getting your room ready, your on the top of the queue and we will call you when your room is ready, should be no more than 20 mins".

This was the first feeling that they didn't know how to treat a guest. No apology or offer to seat us at the bar lobby, maybe offer a drink. Something small to acknowledge the fact that we were spending alot of money at this hotel and our room was not ready on time. A real 4 star hotel would know that its that little courtesy that make all the difference.

2 hours later we still hadn't recieved a call so went back into the line at check in and waited. When I told them we had been waiting for almost 2 hours they said our room was ready. Again, no apology or acknowledgement that they obviously forgot to call us.

Rest of the weekend was filled with these same thoughtless encounters. Whether it was having to hail someone down to take a drink order or the waiting in lines to speak to a hostess, it felt as though I should be lucky to be there. Def takes away from what shoukd be a relaxing treat after months of quarantine.

These little things persisted in other ways like the automatic service charge that is secretly added onto every drink or food bill. Of course not identified by staff unless you ask about it, almost like they are trying to slide it by you. Listen Gurneys, I'll probably tip (well) if its good service, you're supposed to be an upscale hotel, don't add a 18% service charge. If you do dont have an extra tip line in the signature. Its just tacky.

Speaking of hidden fees- they have a 40 dollar per day "resort fee". This practice is banned in some states and most luxury hotels have too much pride to hide inflated charges in this BS line item. I asked at checkout why they still charge a resort fee for services that are either closed or limited due to covid (e.g. no fitness center, limited pool access, no spa or other services that would support even a BS fee. The lady at checkout just smiled and said it was policy.

If you are looking to stay someplace nice, pick somewhere that has a little more pride in their brand and treats hotel guests like you would treat someone visiting your own home. Just a little consideration in a few places and gurneys newport would be deserving of the hype.

The room we occupied was roughly $800 a night, for more than three nights. Our experience at Gurneys was a mixed bag. We can compliment the kitchen cooking staff and the housekeeping staff for doing their jobs.

The employees who interface with clientele are problematic, overall there is a lack of respect and courtesy in general. We travel for work and stay in high end hotels frequently for $350 - 500 a night. Never before have we encountered such a sloppy and casual staff.

Examples:

Calling room service to request a pot of coffee. “There is coffee in the gift shop.”

Returning my key to the valet. I received a lecture. I still don’t know why.

Requested laundry service. And even after calling and checking in with front desk, who said it was noted, no one ever came. (Likely a v good thing, in hindsight.)

Those are not glaring examples, but give you an idea of the tone of the place. No one cared for our comfort, basically. We feel scammed because the price point in no way matches the service we encountered.

Gurneys, you are aspirational. You have a nice setting, now train your staff and hire people with hotel experience. You didn’t deserve what we paid you, even in these COVID19 days.
