Nestled in Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, is celebrated for its distinctive historical ambiance and prime beachfront location, with guests consistently lauding its proximity to local attractions. While the resort's amenities, such as the pools and beach access, are generally appreciated, some visitors mention a shortage of chairs and extra fees. The service at the hotel often receives high marks for attentiveness, even though occasional inconsistencies are noted. Despite the spacious and charming rooms, a few guests feel that the value proposition is diminished by the high costs for services and dining options.

If this is the "best" Honolulu has to offer , I shudder thinking about the rest. Here's a point-by-point description of our disappointing stay at this 'iconic hotel'. Check-in / Check-out at Reception : First & foremost , there was no separate desk for Bonvoy elites. While check-in was relatively smooth , check-out was a textbook example of "preferential treatment". There was only one lady staff member at the desk , and she was so "starstruck" by a caucasian couple checking-in that she found even our "presence" to be raining on her parade. When our turn came , not only did the over-enthusiasm / chirpiness / smiles disappear , she actually put a "COUNTER CLOSED" signboard in front of her ( which indirectly meant "the entire reception is closed" ) . When I politely requested her to process my check-out ( as I was getting late for my flight to Tokyo ) , she bluntly SNAPPED back saying "I am busy on the phone". Luckily , a very courteous gentleman / colleague of hers saw the last minute or so of this appalling misbehaviour , and volunteered to help us out. This incident in itself is enough to dissuade anyone from returning back. Rooms : Both our rooms were in the Mailani Tower on the 12th floor , and all thanks to our Gold Elite status , upgraded to an "Ocean Corner" & "Premier Ocean King" room. The first impression was good , and the fabulous views of Waikiki were worth every penny spent. But this joy was shortlived. Just a few hours after checking-in , we spotted a MASSIVE COCKROACH in our room. And if someone coming from a tropical country like India calls it "massive" , you better take his word for it. The housekeeping was called , and they were able to retieve it. But there was no apology whatsoever , nor an offer to change the room. On closer inspection , the balcony of our "Ocean Corner" room had visible cracks , and one can sense that it's gradually drooping. A big safety concern indeed. Another safety issue worth highlighting : Any random person ( example : Uber Eats deliveries / etc. ) can freely walk right till your room / floor , with no check at all. Mai Tai Bar : Lively. But the service is erratic , with frequent change of servers. Asking for your check is a struggle in itself , as your server would be busy with another table. After a very patient wait of 15-20 mimutes , you'll inadvertently walk down to the bar to sign / pay yourself. As mentioned in my reviews before , we find the concept of "obligatory percentage tipping" at luxury establishments repulsive , but still succumb under peer pressure. Paying gratuity for the mediocre service here was hurtful to say the least. Beach : Yet again , "preferential treatment" at its best. There was a desk handing out beach towels , with atleast 5-6 attendants. There wasn't a concept / requirement of a queue , and everyone would simply approach the desk directly. Sadly though , we did not come in this bracket of "everyone" , and the ringleader of the attendants would "school" us to stand in a non-existential line. Just seconds later , any caucasian guest coming in would be handed over the same beach towel without any stipulations. Staying at The Royal Hawaiian was sadly not a memorable experience for us. I might stay here again , only because of its iconic value & the panoramic views the rooms offer.

Stayed for two nights in March 2023 in the original tower. Rooms are on the small side, but that is to be expected for a hotel built in the 1920s. The robes were nice, the amenities in the bathroom were great, and if you could look past the size, the rooms were comfortable. The pool is very small and hard to get a chair. Although they did have an attendant walking around to assist which was a nice touch. The next resort I stayed in Oahu needed that and it wasn't offered. The Mai Tai bar is great, delicious (but expensive) drinks. Got the coffee and pastries at the coffee shop. The coffee was sub par, the next day I preordered at Vintage Island Coffee instead and had a much better coffee. The two best parts of this hotel are the location and the activities. The resort is set back from the street, right on the beach so much quieter. Hard to find if you don't know where to look, but in the best way. Close to everything. The activities were amazing. I was only there for two nights and took a tour (not the best), made a bracelet, made a lei, took hula lessons (so good!), took a yoga class, and learned about Hawaiian weaving. All included with the stay. This really added to our trip and helped justify the higher price tag. Can't wait to go back!

Very good service and very large rooms but they are a little tired. Hotel opened in 1927 as one of the initial hotels but the rooms could use a renovation. We only stayed one night but had good service and a two connected rooms, both with a large living room.

The hotel was great!! It is just near the Waikiki beach, less than 5 minutes walk. The staff was great and helped me to get the view I wanted! Location is in the centre of Waikiki, with a lot of activities and shops for tourists. The only issue is that Waikiki beach is way too crowded during days!! Mahalo for great experience!!

We stayed five nights and had an absolutely wonderful experience. Our room was in the historic building and was spacious, clean and nicely appointed. Our housekeeper was amazing and so helpful. All staff encountered from check-in to check-out were courteous. polite and helpful. I only wish Azure would go back to an ala carte menu as they had in years past. We will be back next year for our 50th wedding anniversary!

This is an absolutely lovely hotel with a killer view. It sits right on Waikiki Beach and has tons of charm. Lots of cute shops in the hotel as well as having the royal Hawaiian mall right next-door. There's amazing food in the mall that can keep you more than satisfied, while it has classic American joints. It also has some amazing Japanese food and fresh local cuisine that puts the American chains to shame. The location is central to everything. There's a refrigerator in the room for leftovers and drinks. It is right next to an ABC store where you can buy anything you might've forgotten. What makes this hotel is the people. They are so kind and so nice and so willing to give you recommendations for your time in Honolulu. , We had running jokes with a couple of the valets, the individuals at the pool were both helpful and amazingly nice (fresh fruits were so good). Check-in was a breeze housecleaning. Did a great job. I have absolutely zero complaints about this place. I would happily stay there again.

There’s something about this place that brings us joy! It is the second hotel on Waikiki and is now 97 years old. The hotel has an old world charm and is called the pink palace because, when built, the Portuguese talked them into painting it pink! Many hotels in area are basically cement surroundings. Not here as they still have gardens all around the hotel - beautiful! You can walk out hotel and you’re right on the Waikiki beach. Location has many walkable restaurants and shops galore! We’ve stayed here 4 times and in both the original hotel that has great charm and the towers that have a terrific views - so it depends on what you are looking for. Breakfast is wonderful outside and a view of beach/ocean. The only portion that we wish was different is the extremely small pool yet the Sheraton next door is affiliated and guests can use their pool as well.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Royal Hawaiian this week! We haven't left Waikiki yet and had to write about it! You cannot get more luxurious than this hotel stay. Last year we booked a mini suite which was a historic wing corner suite overlooking the gardens, so this year we booked a full suite. We were given the Queen Kapiolani Suite. We loved both. It's amazing how you are staying in busy Waikiki, yet from the windows we could not hear any traffic noise, just the ocean and the birds in the trees. It was heavenly. We never wanted to leave our room! From Mark who assisted us with check-in to housekeeping, the service was impeccable and superb. This stay reminded us so much of our previous stays at Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, but we kept marveling how this hotel offers so much more that you can't even compare them! The Royal Hawaiian is a far nicer experience. Our housekeeper kept everything replenished- they provide every luxurious comfort- from Royal Hawaiian-branded toothbrushes to fragrant Hawaiian soaps, lotions and bath items. There are pink striped frette robes and frette slippers to enjoy that are so soft you won't ever want to take them off. There is a KCup maker with Hawaiian coffees and also a hot pot for boiling water. We loved exploring the hotel and lobby to gaze at all of the incredible historic photos and old menus, as well as relaxing in the rocking chairs overlooking the beach. Daily activities include lei making, yoga, and an historic walking tour of the hotel with a very knowledgeable hostess. We still remember when they added their famous pink coconut snowball to their Royal Hawaiian Bakery and this year found a new favorite, the Royal Hawaiian Cronut. The cream-filled cronut is soft inside with pink frosting on the outside. Wow. We went off our diets for these. CJ who served us at the Bakery was especially outstanding. Breakfast was at the beachfront Surf Lanai and very elegant. We chose the pink pancakes but chose to bring our own coconut syrup because the restaurant does not serve it. They sell coconut syrup in the Accents lobby shop and it was the same price as ABC stores and Longs which were sold out while the Royal Hawaiian actually had it. At check-in you are given their signature pink wristbands. We were almost always able to get chairs at the lovely quiet pool, but sometimes had to sit apart when it was busy. We prefer it to the chairs on the beach. Overall, an absolutely magical stay. We are already trying to figure out how to return next year!

This was nowhere near the luxury experience we were expecting after having stayed at many similar level hotels. Housekeeping was average - towels not refilled some days, coffee inadequately replaced, cleanliness was passable but not pristine or above and beyond like you would expect at this price point and star rating. Food and beverage - unacceptable. Prices were ridiculous for mediocre menu offerings. The Mai Tai didn’t come close to the hype. It was served in a plastic cup in the bar -this might be acceptable by the pool, but not in the late evening. We found many happy hours with $5 Mai Tais nearby- try those instead. Bakery staff were friendly and efficient but none of the pastries we tried were special. Service - average to subpar. A few staff were friendly, the young staff member who took the luggage to our room gave excellent friendly service, but otherwise we were very underwhelmed. Location is excellent but the beach access quickly turns into another money grab when they offer you 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella for $100 USD without even so much as someone to check in with you or bring a fresh towel or drink. You have to walk back to the pool for all of that after paying an exorbitant fee. The pool has nowhere near enough loungers although we did get lucky and find 2 chairs together a few times. Pool is small but most people are going to the beach. Overall this property is not consistent with a luxury level brand & we were dissatisfied with our stay. We had a FAR better experience at a lower priced hotel in Waikiki.

Aloha 204jaimiv, Mahalo for choosing to stay with us and for your detailed review. We genuinely apologize for the service issues you encountered and that we did not meet some of your expectations. Your comments will be shared with the appropriate individuals as we continually strive to improve our overall guest experience. i must question marriott’s “luxury collection” label for the last two hotels at which i’ve stayed. the first was ‘pier south’ at imperial beach; more of a 4-story motel. now, the royal hawaiian, is not a whole lot better. what’s great: - location. situated on waikiki beach and adjacent to the royal hawaiian center for shopping and dining. - i arrived early from thailand and they were gracious to provide a hospitality room in which i could shower and change since my room was not prepared. opportunities for improvement: - rooms. they’re quite antiquated and border the motel-esque vibe inside with their appointments. i am in the newest rooms and they’re at least 15 years old (and that’s a charitable estimate). - fitness room is a small afterthought with two windows. a ‘check the box’ effort. - front desk personnel wearing union ‘flash’ (one with five badges / buttons). i’d prefer politics to remain away from my vacation. - i spoke with three staff various times on my first evening. two of them weren’t mean or rude, but just didn’t seem to care. ‘go down the hall and turn left to get to your building’. those directions were completely unsatisfactory as the building was outside, across a park-like setting, then a right turn, and then onto another building that was attached to a different building. no ‘hall’. - no room service. how is this possible for a marriott, and a luxury collection hotel no less? you may consider a different property or resort if you’re expecting a true luxury hotel this definitely isn’t one.
