This was our first trip back to Honolulu since COVID and we were very pleased with our stay. For my wife and I The Modern Honolulu was the perfect location for shopping, restaurants and beach. We booked our room through our travel club (Travel Advantage Network) that only offered a room without a balcony but we did have a partial ocean and marina view which was great. The rooms were clean and spacious. I think because of COVID there wasn't a daily clean-up but you could request clean towels at any time without a problem. There are 2 pools to pick from, a pool with a private beach and the regular pool. There was enough lounging chairs to pick from and the pool never seemed to be too crowded. As I mentioned before, you are a short walk to the Ala Moana Center and to the Hilton Hawaiian Village which has several good restaurants. Also, you are within walking distance to the main strip of Waikiki Beach area. There is an Enterprise car rental across the street of the hotel. I have a corporate account so I was able to rent a car for a particular day without having to pay garage fees. Overall The Modern Honolulu exceeded our expectations and we are looking at returning there next year.…
I stayed at the Modern for one night in early December on my way back for the mainland. I was a bit anxious after reading some of the negative reviews in here. But very pleased to state that none of these fears came true for me! My stay was exceptional from start to finish! This is a beautiful hotel, mid 60s architectural style hotel- not too big or small. Superb location of the main strip Kalakaua Avenue, minutes to the Hilton Lagoon and beach, high end designer shops and 10 minutes across the canal to Ala Moana mall with its fabulous food courts! Check in was smooth, front desk staff were lovely and pleasant! Lobby decor and business area had beautiful furnishings and decor. Our room was HUGE! We had stayed earlier at the Alohilani, which is a 5 start and a few hundred dollars more expensive however this room was about twice as big! Room was comfortable, had lovely decor and great partial view of harbour and sunset pool below. I don’t know what people are complaining about room being “tired” and “dated”. There were a few scratches on the tables but the couches were fantastic, so comfortable. Bed was great! Nice linens and Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, very nice! Everything in the room is white, so you know housekeeping is doing a great job keeping everything clean! My only complaint about this hotel is that the check out time was 10am. This was really painful. I think they have limited staff (couldn’t really tell honestly ) I asked if I could have a late check out and they told me I could call at 6am and ask for extended check out, but that would defeat the purpose cause I wanted to sleep in. Because of this early checkout and our evening flight, we spent the entire day on one of the daybeds in the pool. These can be rented for $120 a day however as it was a rainy day and not busy, we could spend that amount on food and beverages, which was amazing! The pool staff were Fantastic! Especially our server Kylie (petite Asian female who has family in Vancouver) - she was so nice, friendly, accomadating and was remarkably efficient in servicing the entire pool area by herself for most of the day! She had excellent recommendations for food and drinks. We had the pokey tacos, Galbi bao buns, and healthy salad. Everythjng was delicious! A DJ played music later and overall made for a relaxing and chill environment to spend a day! Thank you for lovely stay.…
Let me first preface that I never write reviews for any accommodation I've stayed at; however, this one was so poor, I felt inclined to write one. Our recent 5 night stay was incredibly disappointing. If you're looking for a 4 star, expect a 2 star. -- Uncleanliness & Service -- 1. There was hair left at the back of our shower (it looked like pubic hair that no one cared to clean before we arrived) 2. There was no room service provided across all 6 days of our stay; replenishment of hair products /body products required calling the front desk 3. I found stains on our bedsheets 4. When we called room service to bring up new floor mats, it took so long that we finished showering before they came up with it 5. We were looking for a map from guest services; however, we ended up being pitched what felt like a pyramid scheme. Rather than getting the map we requested, we were given a pitch. The pitch entailed signing up to watch a 2 hour video that showed the potential upgrades that would be made in return for a gift card and future accommodation. The staff member was persistent and this felt unnecessary because we were giving signals we were not interested. 6. Checkout is at 10AM. At 9:58 AM, after receiving zero room service all throughout our trip, someone knocks on our door. She wanted to remind us when checkout was. This was the last straw... -- Parking -- For those parking in the neighbourhood, we were interested in understanding why someone would pay $26 USD per night when neighbourhood parking was $1/hr on the street along Ala Moana Blvd/Holomoana St. We only paid for 1 night parking because it was not worth it and we parked on the streets the remainder of our stay. TLDR: Park alongside Ala Moana Blvd/Holomoana St. It's very safe! If you can score a spot near the ramp, this leads you back to the hotel. -- Summary TLDR -- Go somewhere else. Anywhere else... You'll find a cleaner room with actual room service.…
Upon arrival to hotel, the room we received was below average. Shower had mold in it and the carpet was stained and felt dirty. The room smelled musty and the couch also smelled moldy. After complaining the manager came to review and luckily they had a room they could upgrade us to and move into. They were kind enough to give us $100 credit for the inconvenience, but the upgraded room also smelled a little musty especially the couch. The bed was below average comfort and the linens on the bed were minimal and worn. Time for an upgrade for sure. The Grove restaurant had very good food for breakfast lunch and dinner but the huge downfall were the paper plates and plastic cups. Drinking nice wine or champs out of a plastic cup was less than appealing. After a few meals on the paper plates, we decided to eat elsewhere. We want better than average on vacation and this wasn't cutting it. The staff and management were very helpful with the room situation and the location of the hotel was ideal. At the end of the Waikiki strip near the marina so it wasn't as crazy busy but still convenient to all the shopping and food choices. The pools were nice, but the pool lounge chairs were extremely uncomfortable. The padding on the wooden chairs were super thin and moldy looking and dirty. Made it hard to be comfortable by the pool for any length of time. I did however appreciate the smaller boutique feel of the hotel and the not so busy, crazy style of a huge hotel chain. Some upgraded improvements would go a long way in my opinion. …
This hotel was really nice. The rooms we stayed in are newly renovated ,it seems like half the hotel is newly done. They have a beautiful pool with a bar and food. It is in walkng distance to the beach and many beautiful hotels. The staff was very nice.
Tried two rooms, both smelled musty and had very stained carpet, room was seriously so gross we didn’t even stay the night. This hotel has definitely gone downhill in last few years. I stayed for an extended time in 2016 and overall the rooms looked much better.
This hotel is in a bad need of a refurbishment. From the moment we got into our room we could see wet carpet from the leaking bathroom and knobs falling off cupboards. The worst aspect is there is no daily room service. If you require any clean towels or linen you have to call and someone will deliver. You need to change the linen yourself. It would be great if this was communicated to us prior to our stay. So very disappointing and hard to comprehend. Paper cups are not a great look for a hotel and also we had to ask for these or “get them from the pool”!! We would expect a credit for the lack of housekeeping and poor service. There seem to be plenty of staff in the reception area which could have been utilised to increase customer service. The restaurant with paper plates and plastic cutlery were a shock. Not to mention the lack of care from the staff. It’s time the new owners (Hilton) sorted this disgrace of a hotel out and stop ripping hard working people off.…
The Hilton employees were pushy with sales tactics to get us on their tours. There was a protest outside that woke us up at 7am. The pool was clearly not heated despite the staff saying so. And there was no hot tub to make up for the cold pool.
Overall very happy with this hotel. My previous stay was excellent- I was located on a higher floor. This stay I was on the 3rd floor and the street noise was VERY loud. I will make sure to request a higher floor next stay.
The Modern was a decent hotel at the marina of Waikiki. The room was clean, and had the simple amenities (mini fridge, coffee maker, microwave) We had a decent view of the pool and the ocean in the distance. Staff at the front desk was pleasant. Parking fee is high ($34.95 per night) It didn’t have any shops, but had a small restaurant with a limited menu. Only stayed there since it was part of our list from a timeshare…but NOT a timeshare as for amenities at all!
