We’re taking you back to a golden bygone era cloaked in hazy memories. Here, at the last of the vintage walk-up hotels, you can connect with your own visions of Hawaii right in the middle of Waikiki. So, come and tap into the Kuhio Avenue “Heyday” culture of the early 70s. Kick back with swaying palms, mai tais around the pool, and remodeled rooms with lanais and cool island colors. Rinse your sandy feet off in our outdoor shower. As you fall into the rhythm of the island, you’ll feel the tropical fever that captivated the world. The newly renovated White Sands Hotel joins understated elegance with vibrant Hawaiian style, so you can experience the essence of old Waikiki without sacrificing the comfort and convenience of modern times.

Stayed here with my son over Labor Day weekend. He found a great deal on Booking.com that made it hard to resist. We were able to check in early, had a basic standard room with 2 double beds. Beds were very comfortable. Room had a microwave and mini-fridge. Bathroom was shower only but water pressure was good and hot. Lanai with table and chairs overlooking side street but we never used it. Only weird thing was there was no daily housekeeping unless you paid $25 per housekeeping visit. Since we were only there for 4 nights, we didn't need our sheets changed. You could bring your bath towels down and exchange them for clean ones. They do charge a resort fee but I believe it was only $25 day. The first day we checked out beach chairs which was awesome. They weren't available for the rest of our stay, only the taller folding chairs in a bag. Only improvement I would suggest would be to get more beach chairs and bigger towels for the beach. Went to the bar one night, very cute with swings. Their restaurant. Heyday, just opened but we never ate there. I believe they only served dinner. Only used the pool on the last day. Had several hours after checkout before flight so they let us stay by the pool. There was a outside shower to rinse off at. Pets are allowed and there seemed to be quite a few people with their dogs. I'm sure that is hard to find in Waikiki. The hotel has a retro vibe which is kind of cool. Makes you feel like you were visiting Hawaii in the 60s. Clientele was mostly younger. It is several streets back, near the canal, but centrally located in Waikiki. If the price was right, I would not hesitate to return. Honestly, my son stayed at the Moana Surfrider earlier in the summer and said his room there wasn't any nicer than our room at White Sands and it was 4x the price.

Aloha playamomma, Mahalo for staying at the White Sands Hotel and giving us such an in-depth review. Due to the current pandemic, our usual daily service is changed so that minimum contact is observed. Thus our policy changed to performing room cleaning for in-house guests to once every seven days. Apologies if this was an inconvenience. Glad that you enjoyed the bar and like the retro-Hawaii vibe. We greatly appreciate your feedback and delighted that you enjoy your stay overall. We constantly strive to provide guests with a wonderful experience, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything else that we can improve on. Your comments have been shared to our team and we hope to see you again soon! Mahalo nui loa, White Sands Hotel Guest Services

This is a very quaint but soficated hotel. It has a very cool Hawaiian 50's vibe. It was perfect for our family of 4. It was close to lots of restaurants and a short 5 minute walk to Waikki Beach. The hotel offered complmentary beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs for you to use free of charge. There is also a small pool and tiki bar. The ladies at the front desk were very accommondating with our ealy check in and with holding our luggage after checkout. The coffee bar was also convienent for a morning coffee and we didin't have to stand in line at Kona Coffee or Starbucks, plus it was extremely reasonably priced in comparison. Our family also loved the short walk to Paia Fish Market and Maui Brewing Company - look for happy hours for drinks and food specials.

Everything had been updated and very well decorated. The room had a small kitchen - perfect for our two night stay. It is also easy to get an uber to Pearl Harbor and Diamon Head Crater. Speedishuttle was great to pre-schedule airport transportation as well.

Overall, a very cool place to stay! We will stay here again on our next trip to Honolulu!

Aloha Brianne S, Mahalo for staying at the White Sands Hotel and giving us an amazing review. The goal of the renovated hotel is what you just expressed, the Hawaiian 50's vibe. Our location is definitely a prime spot for exploring Waikiki, whether you are at the beach or going to the nearby restaurants, aquarium or zoo, we are right in the middle of it all. The kitchen area only has a microwave and mini-fridge, but we are glad that the small kitchen area in the room was enough. We greatly appreciate your feedback and delighted that you enjoy your stay. We constantly strive to provide guests with a wonderful experience, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything else that we can improve on. Found this quaint, old style hotel a couple of blocks off Waikiki Beach. Rooms were clean and comfortable with microwave and frig. We had poolside which were terrific for access to the pool and hot tub. Great poolside bar and food service. People were very friendly. Is there an ocean view? Not even remotely! but the walk to the beach is easy and through the heart of Waikiki. Lots of shops and places to eat. This is not the Royal Hawaiian but it is much more reasonably priced and the feel is more apartment than hotel. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is hard to find and parking is a bit of a mess, but once on the property you'll love the retro / boho vibe. We loved our rooms - we had a pool view double and a king suite. The king suite was especially spacious. The front desk is overwhelmed and only answer their phone half the time. We asked for blankets because the pull out bed in the suite only had sheets and the bed spreads are as thin as sheets themselves. We went to the front desk to get blankets because they don't answer their phones (called from cell and phone in room) and they said they'd have house keeping bring the blankets up, but they never did. Ended up having to use towels to cover up. The restaurant is not really a restaurant, just limited food service at the pool. Not a lot of seating, and people "save" seats with their towels and get in the pool or even go back to their room, so it's VERY LIMITED. The hotel is precious - the decor is so fun. Beds were comfy. The bathroom shower is similar to that of a public beach shower with vents to the outside - make sure you close these at night or the street noise is extremely loud. You definitely need a white noise maker of some sort or you will hear the street sounds (loud cars, cars driving by with their music blaring) as this is a small hotel right in the heart of a busy city.

Before I get into the annoyances, I will share a few nice things about the hotel: good pool area and hot tub, charming restaurant/bar with swing seats, great lounge music always playing in the common area, generally charming mid-century modern style, good location walking distance from the beach or bus stops. (Oahu tip: you don't need a car! 'TheBus' goes everywhere on the island, as long as you're not in a rush, and sells day passes for $5.50.)

My wife and I were initially given a room with two twin beds, and a dead cockroach on the floor. This was because our reservation was on Hotel Tonight, but I would have expected the staff to give us the most logical available room first (one large bed, since we are a couple.) I asked for a different room, and we were given a room with a king bed instead. This room was good aside from the softness of the mattress and pillows. For some reason our bed had only 3 pillows, so I had to ask for more. Unfortunately there was nothing the staff was able to do for the uncomfortable mattress. The kitchenette was good, but the TV was disappointing and the huge step into the shower was somewhat difficult to navigate. Since there's no room cleaning, it would have been nice to at least have a greater supply of towels (and better towels), or refreshed towels every couple days. One of our beach towels also had an enormous hole in it. Some of these issues I might overlook in a cheaper hotel, especially one abroad, but I expected better quality when spending $200/night for a hotel.

They will charge you $25 daily resort fee and if you need your room cleaned that is another $25. They do not provide any bottled water. They wanted to charge us $30 because we were checking in 10 minutes before 1 pm. Seriously? Let's talk about shower. The shower head is only 5 feet from the floor. So if you are taller then you have to sit down to use the shower. Basically, even if you say hello they will charge you.
This is a mediocre hotel charging for 5 star hotel.

This is my second time staying at this hotel. My first trip in Feb 2022 was solid, any hiccups that occurred were easily overlooked. It was our first vacation in 2 years! However, this time around I couldn't help but feel that this hotel cuts alot of corners at the guests expense. I was in town for 7 nights for work and some off days. We will start with parking.. it is on a fist come basis so if you are lucky enough to snag a parking pass when checking in.. great! The lot is small (10-12 spaces), there is no designated parking which means someone in a huge SUV can park in a small spot and block off access to the rest of the lot. The room decor is great! The experience in the room however is not. There is no luggage rack, larger closet with 6 hangars, no iron, thin towels, a shower head that is positioned really low, tiny shower, older fixtures in bathroom, bedding feels cheap, they give you the bare minimum of towels (1 each guest for a king room). The bathroom does not have a fan and you can hear everything happening in the room next to yours. They also do not clean your room unless you want to pay $25 extra for each cleaning. They did offer 1 cleaning per 7 days however we didn't get one service of cleaning despite 7 night stay. They charge $25 "amenity fee" despite not having a gym, laundry facility or business center. There is a pool and jacuzzi. They have a number of events at the hotel and I feel that those events take precedent over the hotel guests experience. There is no space for hotel guests to hang out by the pool if an event is going on. We were in town for one such event and it was like a frat party in our hallway. There is also a dive bar next door to the hotel. So you will get some pretty drunk people hanging out on the street.
The saving grace really is the bar and restaurant. They have a great wine list and the pupus are yummy! What you experience at the lobby level, from the bathroom to the bar does not resonate in the rest of the property

This hotel had fantastic service. The building is older but was renovated so the rooms are nice. It's smaller and homier than the huge skyscraper buildings all over Waikiki so it felt like a refresher after being out with all the tourists. It's just a block or two away to Waikiki beach and many shops in walking distance. Traffic getting out of Waikiki is really bad but that's not the hotel's fault. Housekeeping comes every few days punctually, and when we needed new towels or other supplies in between they quickly and politely gave it to us, no questions asked. Same for beach and pool towels. Staff were always very friendly and welcoming. The customer service was our favorite part about our stay. Our room had a counter with a mini fridge/freezer and microwave which was perfect for packing picnic lunches. Parking is very limited but there was a larger parking garage a block away for the same price. Slightly more inconvenient but worked just fine once we figured it out. The pool area is really nice and we love the hot tub. There are pool parties a few times each week. Not being the drinking/partying type, we didn't enjoy the noise or smell during the afternoon/evening and the morning after. But it was just a few times and I know some people come to Hawaii to do that. Overall a great place to stay, highly recommend!

Aloha loganovard96, Mahalo for staying with us at the White Sands Hotel and taking the time to share your fantastic experience with us. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that our service left a positive impression on you. We take pride in the fact that our hotel combines the charm of "Old Hawai'i" with modern amenities to provide a homely and refreshing experience away from the bustling skyscrapers of Waikiki. Our location is indeed a gem, just a stone's throw away from Waikiki beach and within walking distance to many shops and attractions. We understand that traffic in the area can be challenging, but we appreciate your understanding in this regard. It's wonderful to hear that our housekeeping and front desk teams met your needs promptly and courteously. We're thrilled that you found the customer service to be your favorite part of your stay. Regarding the pool area, we're sorry to hear that the noise from pool parties wasn't to your liking. We'll consider ways to minimize any disruptions during those events to ensure all our guests have a comfortable stay. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to Waikiki. A hui hou! Mahalo nui loa, Guest Services

This place is wonderful! Staff was awesome.
Food and environment was delightful. The swings at the bar was a great touch. The pool was always clean and sparkly every morning.
the Parking is not easy but available on site. $40 not easy meaning it is cramped parking and there is allot of 3 point turns to get in to park or to exit sometimes. I rented a Chrysler 300 and it was a bit of a challenge compared to parking a Kia soul, but no biggie I am a good driver so it was not a big deal. If parking is not available they have a hotel across the way you can utilize at $35 a day
at they only clean the rooms every 3rd day. they do host parties, during my stay was an LBGT super bowl party and it was Lit! LOL then at Night there was 2 fellas singing love songs and playing guitar from Stevie Wonder to Dennis Brown..
My stay was very nice & I would most certainly stay here again.

We loved the vintage vibe of this hotel, especially that it's smaller and more intimate than the large high rises.
We got lucky with a great room with a nice view and shower. We stayed on the 3rd floor with a pool view. Our room might have been more updated than others because the shower was a large-sized stall, with a tall over 6 feet shower head. Plenty of hot water and good pressure.
Loved sitting by the pool. The bartenders were friendly and came by frequently to service people's drinks. The hot tub is located in a quieter area in a grotto setting with waterfall which was really nice.
The only downsides were the parking and check in. The check in process seemed a bit unorganized and chaotic. We were willing to pay extra for early check in and were told to come back at 1pm and that they should have some rooms available by then. We returned at 1pm, but were told housekeeping was not done and no rooms were available. They said they could put us on standby so we waited in the lobby, but we weren't able to check in until 3pm. I wish they would have a better idea of when rooms will actually be available. That was a bit disappointing.
The parking is $35 per day in a parking garage located across the street (no valet). They have a small lot on site, but said those spaces were already all reserved. The reservation system for that lot seemed a little iffy and not clear - we were not updated if/when any spots would be opening up during our stay.
The $25 per day amenity fee covers beach chairs and towels, but not much else so a little steep for what you get. The walk to the beach is about 10 minutes.
Overall we liked staying here, but it seems a bit overpriced when you compare it to other hotels that are closer to the beach with better parking options and customer service.

Aloha laurenbh419 Mahalo for staying at the White Sands Hotel. Your honest review is important to us. We are aware that our parking is limited. Waikiki was very different in the 50s (when this property was built). So we've partnered with our neighboring hotels to allow parking to our guests. We can definitely work on making this more clear on our website. Our amenities include the beach gear, go pro rentals, wifi, free yoga Saturdays, and complimentary newspaper. We even have live music 3 nights a week. We can work on more amenities in the near future. We have shared your comments with our management team to better serve our guests. Thank you again for your comments. We hope to have the opportunity to host you again. Mahalo Nui Loa, Guest Services
