Completed in 1999, the Snow Lodge is the newest of the park’s full service hotels, and has been recognized with the Cody Award for Western Design and Travel and Leisure’s Inn of the Month. The heavy timber construction, exterior log columns and cedar shingle roof were part of the design that is destined to make the Snow Lodge a significant example of classic “parkitecture.” The Snow Lodge also features a full-service dining room, quick service “Geyser Grill” and the charming Bear Den Gift Store.

We live adjacent to YS and have gone into the Old Faithful on a snowcoach several times over the years. We recently spent three nights in a Western cabin which was comfortable and clean, and had a small refrigerator and coffee maker which we appreciated and used. We reserved snowcoach drop-offs on two of our days to ski Spring Creek Divide and Fairy Falls, both lovely trails traversing landscapes, forests, meadows, geyser basins, and along creeks and rivers. We saw bison, elk, otters, ducks, and geese. Snowcoach drivers going in and out of Old Faithful, as well as the coach drivers who did the ski drop-offs were all friendly, informative, and helpful. We also enjoyed walking several hours around the geyser basins and to the Observation Point that looks down on Old Faithful.

In the evening after dinner we enjoyed hanging out in the lodge by the fireplace, playing cards with our friends and listening to live music. But unfortunately, the restaurant was our least favorite experience. Breakfasts and dinners were mediocre. The "hot food" in the breakfast buffet was generally lukewarm to cool, and I can't imagine how it met heath requirements. When we mentioned this to the manager he just got defensive. One waiter at dinner yelled at us after we asked him to separate our checks. We heard the host talking to a waiter about how she couldn't wait to get out of here. It seemed like some staff were unhappy and overwhelmed, and service was often very slow. We are pretty flexible and informal, yet we don't remember such a poor dining experience. But luckily the weather was amazing, skiing was fun and OF during the winter is our favorite time.

The Snow Lodge is one of the 2 hotels in the Old Faithful area and the only one open during the winter. We had a lovely time at the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. However we do have one complaint. We took the shuttle from Mammoth to the Snow Lodge which arrived at noon but unfortunately you can’t get into your rooms until 4:30 pm which meant either watching Old Faithful a couple of times and walking around the geyser basin or staying in the lobby waiting for your room to be ready or a combination of the 2 which we did. However if you stay in the lobby you can’t connect to the hotels Wi-fi as you need your room number to log on and the front desk can’t tell you your room number until all the rooms are ready !!!! Bizarre. !!!!!!! Our room was on the first floor and was large with a king sized bed, a table and chair with a separate armchair. There were also a couple of wardrobes by the window. The room although very comfortable did need a bit of TLC. It was well equipped with a fridge, coffee making equipment, charging plugs on the table and mostly excellent Wi-fi. As with other hotels in the park it did not have a TV. The bathroom however was on the small with the single wash basin on one side of the entrance hall to the room and on the other side behind the door a shower over the claw tooth bath with toilet. Again these could do with refurbishment. The hotel has a small coffee shop in the lobby area and there is also a gift shop and ski rental shop. There is also a large separate (though interconnecting) bar next to the restaurant where you can get bar snacks — the staff there were excellent. In addition to the main restaurant there is a grill room that is open until 3 pm but we didn’t go in there. Old Faithful is about a 10 minute walk away and the hotel does provide information on the timing of the next eruption. The large Visitors centre is on the way to the the geyser. All the staff we dealt with in the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful. We are a wonderful stay

With the COVID-19 pandemic making a mess of the tourism business, booking a place to stay in Yellowstone park in early October of 2020 was a challenge. Almost all lodges were closed, but the Snow Cabins in the Old Faithful area had some availability. They're expensive for what they offer, but they were clean, and most important, they were convenient to the trails around the Upper Basin. None of the restaurants in the Old Faithful complex were offering eat-in service, but the Geyser Grill at the Snow Lodge did offer carryout of good burgers and fries (and a big salad..good enough for two) that we could get back to the cabin and eat before it got cold. There's no A/C in the rooms and we visited during a stretch of warmer weather in early October that had us opening windows. But the baseboard heat was working well and we were able to regulate the room temperature fairly well. Overall, we paid for the convenience of being on the trails between 7 and 8 am with almost no one else out there and not having to drive to get there. Also, there's no Internet WiFi in the cabins but the cell signal was adequate for us to tether through a phone to upload travel blog entries from our laptop.

This place is an architectural failure. As you can see, the windows are only designed to open to a max angle, facing down. What does hot air do? It rises, thank you science people. When you see transom windows or car roofs, you see the windows angle up to release air. There's a reason for that - that's how it works.

Here, air can only stream in from the sides or the bottom. You only feel the air flow if you are sitting directly under the window. The fan does nothing. I was sweltering in still air. It must have been over 84 degrees even at midnight. I didn't fall asleep until after 2 am. I would never subject anyone to this. I did not choose this hotel. My tour company is contracted to this hotel, and I have told them they should avoid renewing this contract. But clearly, only by forcing people to use Snow Lodge would people stay here. I bet their return guests percentage is below industry average.

Another thing I have noticed at the FOUR Xanterra properties I have stayed at: they all mount their soap/shampoo/conditioner dispensers way above adult average height. Considering that many park visitors are families with children and seniors, this is just stupid. If you have a shoulder injury, you are also struggling with this. You probably need to be 5'8 for the pumps to be at shoulder height. Parents can expect to help their kids shower, or pump out soap to place at tub level. Come to think if it, that could be the reason why there is always something empty whenever check in. I have always had to call housekeeping to refill something.

I do like the location of Xanterra properties, and have worked around the shower dispenser issue at those other locations. However, there is no workaround or excuse for a hot room. Another guest was complaining about this, and joked she would rather have camped outdoors than stay another night in her room. Yeah, it's that bad when you can bond with a stranger.

We stayed at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge cabins in January 2020. If you have not been to Yellowstone in the winter it is a must. The cabins are a 4 minute walk from the main Lodge. There are no phones in the room and no Wi-Fi in the cabins. Wi-Fi is somewhat sketchy in the lodge also. But hey you're on vacation enjoy the beauty of Yellowstone. The best advantage of being in Yellowstone in the winter is there are no crowds. The park is a totally different environment in the winter.

We appreciated that there were no tiny bottles of shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom sink and shower had large pump bottles of soap, shampoo, and shower gel.

If you do not need housekeeping to switch out your towels and make your bed you can save $5 a night.

It is very cold so dress in layers and layers and layers. During our stay the weather was between -5 degrees and 20 degrees.

Be aware in the winter you cannot drive into old faithful area. You must pay for an approved shuttle in to the park.

Hotel staff were friendly and informational. They get huge rushes of people checking in when the shuttles arrived at the hotel. Be patient ... you're on vacation.

We felt very lucky to book Old Faithful Snow lodge just a few weeks ahead of time during Covid-19.

The lodges are, indeed, very expensive for a fairly "basic" room however the location is unbeatable. The park does get crowded, but not until 10AM and then it certainly dies down about 3pm. So, by staying IN the park, you can really see so much more, peacefully.

The room was very clean and large. It had plenty of room to spread out and it was quiet. The window does open and our night was cool, so no AC was not an issue for us. The restaurant is open for Take Out only due to Covid. They have plenty of tables and chairs outside to enjoy your meal and even bottles of wine they will sell with it. They are certainly working very hard to keep everyone as safe as possible, while still making it possible to visit this amazing park.

The room has no TV and the wi-fi is almost useless. Be aware that your entire time in Yellowstone will have little connection with cellular / internet. Take paper maps with you.

I would definitely stay in this Lodge again.

You are paying for the location, but not much else! I visited in August 2020 and it was quite warm during my visit. The main drawback of the hotel is that there’s no air conditioning in the guest rooms, because “you don’t need it” (their words, not mine). The window in the room provides little to no breeze. It also happened to be 85+° when I was there. The accommodations are very basic - nothing to write home about. The soap/shampoo smells nice! But you are really paying for the location, such as being mere steps away from Old Faithful (and an equally as incredible geyser trail) and a short drive from all other destinations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they were very strict on masks and social distancing while on the property. Limited food service caused for very long lines at peak meal times. No coffeemaker or microwave in room and they’ll take $5/night off your bill for the inconvenience.
At the end of the day, I wouldn’t stay here again, but also - where are you going to stay?? They know the answer is nowhere close, so they will charge you big bucks for the convenience.

Disclosure: We are staying here during the covid-19 pandemic, so please interpret this with that lense. Despite it being an over 100 year old historic property, we were shocked at how basic the rooms are. There is no air conditioning. The window only opens a short bit for security purposes, however you are provided with a pedestal fan. There is no TV. No WiFi. It is sparsely decorated. Other than the fact that you can look out your window and see Old Faithful from a short distance, if you are in a geyser view room, this accommodation in no way meets my expectation for the $577/night we are paying for our geyser-view room. First, their front desk is closed, as is their restaurant. You have to check in at the Snow Lodge hotel and food service is available at every other nearby hotel except for this one. Because their main entrance/reception area is closed at this time, you have to enter the hotel from a side hallway. It felt like we were entering a college dormitory. I have never paid this amount of money per night for a hotel and am shocked with such little accommodation. Yes this is a historic building. Yes it is literally next to Old Faithful. But we actually had a better experience at a Best Western Motel on our drive-thru Wyoming from Denver. That said, the room and bathroom were clean.

I do not understand some of the negative reviews of the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. We are in the middle of a pandemic and are grateful that Yellowstone Park and the hotels are open! My husband and I just spent three nights at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge during the first week in October. The hotel lobby is beautiful with lots of wood, a lit fireplace and interesting light fixtures. All the staff members we encountered were helpful and friendly. Checkin was fast and we went up to our lovely room.

Because we were traveling during the pandemic we knew that none of the beautiful dining rooms were open. However, we were very pleasantly surprised to find out that the dining room offered meals every night for takeout. We would order the food, get a buzzer, go back to our room and return to pick up the food in 15 minutes and then eat in our room. We enjoyed trout, fried chicken, short ribs, burgers and the excellent roasted red pepper and Gouda soup (we had the soup every night!).

Beer and wine was available at the hotel restaurant and at the general store next door.

We were also thrilled to discover there was a barista in the lobby every morning starting at 6:30 am. I had cappuccinos every morning. (I had initially got coffee from the Geyser Grill and found it undrinkable so I was so happy to find the barista.)

It is so convenient to be a short walk to Old Faithful. Every morning I took a walk through the geyser basin before we started our day. There was always something interesting to see. I will admit it helped that every day was bright and sunny and started about 30 degrees and rose to 70 by mid afternoon. We saw both bison and elk by the hotel.

We knew there were no tvs in the rooms and we knew the WiFi was weak. It was very weak. We could text and email but we could not watch or even listen to the vice presidential debate. A staff member told us the hotel is in the process of upgrading their WiFi system.

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and would definitely return.

We stayed in a Snow Lodge cabin for 2 nights. The walls are paper thin and we could hear conversations from the guests in adjoining units. The toilet/shower area was super compact despite the generous size of the room. Sink and shower faucet handles were old and hard to work. The fan did not work. Soap dispensers had not been filled up and no extra rolls of toilet paper were stocked in the room. The biggest concern was the size of the room fridge... the smallest size available. It seems ironic that a location where food service is expensive and hard to access because of hours and demand that these rooms would not offer more of a kitchenette for families who are looking to save a little money on an expensive trip.

All of the hotels in Yellowstone are premium-priced for location...I get that. I just think this one is in need of some desperate renovations and redesign to make the high price justifiable.

I agree. It may be based on the weather that day. I’ve heard locals refer to spring as the muddy season. They may still require the same restrictions on people getting into the park. I’d definitely contact xanterra the concession and ask what the story is. We went once years ago in early June from the north just so we could take the Beartooth hwy. it was piled high with snow and a storm started. Couldn’t see a thing and the ranger told us to close the gate behind us because they were closing the highway. It’s high elevation and different weather up there!
