From the moment you are picked up by the Wakatobi team in Bali it is nothing but excellence. You are escorted by your valet and briefed on your trip.

When you arrive at the island you are assigned a guide. We travelled with 3 (10/6/3)children and the resort provided complementary baby sitters and these ladies were exceptional they had activities for the kids very day and always went above and beyond.

The diving was incredible the biodiversity is amazing. I am a macro photographer and the pigmy seahorse population here is world class.

I come for the diving I stay for the food. Each and every meal is spectacular the freshness and quality of ingredients is unparalleled in a resort of this type. The pride that is taken in the restaurant is commendable.

You can bet I will be coming back

As older divers, my husband and I went to Wakitobi to dive with maximum freedom and yet constant care. Everything WAS top care and kindness.
To help celebrate my 70th birthday, we were given a special candlelit dinner away from the restaurant - just for the 2 of us with a complimentary bottle of wine!
I love turtles and on one dive saw 18 turtles! The best!

After flying into their private airstrip and taking a short boat ride to the small resort, we encountered the staff waiting for our arrival. The 70's version of the TV show Fantasy Island suddenly popped into my head. And that's pretty much what it felt like I was living in for a week. I cannot say enough (as others said) about the exceptional service. The staff remembers everyone's name, which is such a nice touch. They go out of their way to make sure your experience is perfect, starting with a greeting sign at the jetway! As you exit the airport you see many signs of drivers waiting for their party. Wakatobi somehow got right to the plane. Wow! Any minor issue, and they will try to be sure it is taken care of. I was unfamiliar with how dive computers work, and several people made sure I knew how to use it. Internet access was a great lifeline. Spotty, but sometimes as fast as home. The food was fantastic…BUT several people in our group and others at the resort had some intestinal issues. We never could determine a cause. Others ate the same food and had no problems. But I recommend having a good stock of immodium ready at the first sign. You don't want that distraction when diving at all their spectacular dive sites, which are usually within a 10 minute boat ride. We only had one night dive. More would have been a nice option. I really enjoyed the excursion to the nearby village. The young kids followed us around, and it's interesting to see life in a remote Indonesian village. The behind-the-scenes tour was also fascinating. Wakatobi has a very interesting relationship with the area - some money goes for conservation, agreements are made not to fish in the area, and a large number of people are employed or helped by this small resort.

We are just back from Wakatobi after a 1 week snorkel group trip. From the minute we met the Wakatobi staff at the Bali airport until the end of the trip we were treated like rock stars. Their team couldn't do enough for us from carrying our bags to providing a pillow menu for the room.

Our trips focus was on snorkeling. Wakatobi has about 8 dive/snorkel boats, each about 75 feet in length. We left our snorkel gear, wet suit, rash guard, etc. with their team and they maintain it during your stay. Each boat snorkel trip will have your equipment already on the boat and after the snorkel they even rinse/clean it all for you. The boat offers easy access from the water and you are greeted with a warm wet washcloth after your snorkel as well as drinks and fruit.

Each snorkel trip had no more than 16 of us with one guide for every 4 people. No more than 1 boat was at any site ensuring tons of space for everyone. The quantity and variety of coral and fish was spectacular. This was the best snorkeling we have ever experienced. Getting there was tough but once in Bali it was not that painful.

The room was well sized, mini fridge with soft drinks included. The AC in the room was 100% needed. Food options were plentiful even for us picky eaters. Both Western and Indonesian dishes were served (buffet style) at each meal. You do need to exercise a little caution as some of the Indonesian spices can really be hot.

A rash guard (both long legs and long shirt are 100% needed. The sun is really hot and temperatures on land were about 85 degrees with 80+% humidity. We were assigned Socko (sp?) as our snorkel guide and she was spectacular. She could find underwater creatures that none of us could normally see. All of the guides were in the water with both a write on slate to tell us the names of what we were seeing as well as a set of identify cards to point out other items of interest. On each boat they also had a large reference book for quick help identifying some sea creatures that we had seen.

Tons of room for cameras both on the boat and in the dedicated camera room on shore.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of the best snorkeling, and diving, in the world. I thank Claire and her team for all the did for our group.

We last visited Wakatobi in 2019, and when planning to return to SE Asia it was the first place on our list to visit. Our previous experiences had taught us that Wakatobi is organized, dependable, and adherent to whatever guidelines are in place at the time. True to expectations, the trip organization went smoothly. We were met at the airplane, expedited through VOA and immigrations, and spirited away with our arranged driver Suka. Spent a few days in Bali then took the charter to Maranggo where we were met with the village taxis and taken from the new port to the Wakatobi Jetty.

The resort has survived with it's standards intact. The dive managers Chris and Kiara spent most of the pandemic patrolling the reefs, reminding the fishermen that this is a National Park! We stayed in Villa 2 and were spoiled by Dicky, with a steady array of fruits, nuts, drinks, snacks and clean towels. The diving and snorkeling are amazing as always - even though several days were rainy, the underwater landscape remains healthy and vibrant. The soft corals continue to amaze, and with the help of dive guide Kiara we were able to see pygmy seahorses, tiny crab and peacock shrimp, huge schools of fish, the amazing corals at Roma, etc. Snorkeling around the jetty remained a favorite activity, with octopi, moray and snowflake eel, kraits, turtles and anemone. There was a bit more trash than usual - carry a net bag and pick up stuff while you're swimming around.

We thought the food was good - there's a new chef, who is diligent about meeting food requirements and who also cooks great local food. If you get a chance to try his beef rendang, it's worth the trip. The fresh sashimi is also unbeatable.

Weather could've been better, and mosquitos were hungry, but that's Mother Nature saying hello. Glad to be back and already looking forward to our next trip.

My dive travel experience;

Instructor
2247 dives
92.5 weeks of travel outside of the US for diving

Not an easy place to get to but a very nice property. We stayed for a total of eleven nights (36 dives) and were travelling with a couple that often travel with us. I would give it a five star rating if it was not for a service issue we had with one of their staff.

Starting with the resort. We had a standard non-view room and it was plenty spacious with a good bed. The pillows were just okay, but interestingly the resort has several pillows to choose from. I tried two different kinds but did not like either. The property is very well manicured and very clean. The restaurant was buffet only and a bit odd on the food choices for my taste, but everyone else seemed to like it. The service from the hotel and restaurant staff was amazing. They call you by your name after the second day.

Now for the diving. The house reef is a great dive but not very accessible. It is dependent on the currents and the tides. The staff do their best to make the house reef as diveable a possible, but it can be a bit difficult. The boats used to reach the dive spots are very large and roomy with easy entry and exits. The dive guides did their best to find you critters, but unfortunately I felt the diving in the area was a bit boring with mostly poor visibility. We rarely got more than 60 feet of vis and although the reefs and fish life were above average, the critters were lacking. This certainly is no Raja Ampat nor does it have any muck.

So, here was my issue. I found the local staff to be very pleasant and accommodating but the white staff (scuba shop) to be mostly uninterested in you or your needs. Our last day of diving it was announced that we would be repeating a dive site for the third time. I strolled over to the two dive guides on the boat, one being an Indonesian who was our guide and the second a white guide, and requested that we go somewhere else as the four in my group had done the dive twice before. The white guy immediately spoke up and said we could not as his dive group had not been there yet. He basically left us with no option or suggestions. By the way there were only two in his group. The good news is our guide worked it out and we were moved to another boat, but it was inconvenient. This was not the only issue with white employees at the hotel as they mostly walked by you without acknowledging your existence.

Again, nice place with generally great service, but the diving was not what I expect from Indonesia.

If you look on a map, first zooming out and them slowly zooming in, you will see that Wakatobi is located just on a very unique spot, where our planet's underwater biodiversity is at its highest.
So, Wakatobi Dive Resort prioritize diving experience in front of everything. Dive team operates through an excellently engineered process. Dive team, the boats and the entire operation is just flawless and they make sure that you get the best of the best out of your stay in Wakatobi. Every four divers are assigned to a dive master. Dive masters are very attentive to the experiences that you are looking forward and carefully balancing them. Yet my humble recommendation to anyone, who will read this review, and as a second time Wakatobi guest, will be to "surrender" to your dive master, since if you do this you will really get the "best of the best"...
In 2018 we dived with Shoko, and this August we dived with Andrea, who both are excellent, excellent dive masters.
As said, since "diving first", all essentials and "comfort" elements are fully in place here. After your first dive, you receive your most favored hot drink in a private thermos with your name on it. If you have special dietary requirements, they prepare your snacks accordingly with your name on it. Everything, every detail is as it should be.
Since I and my wife are very enthusiastic divers, other that the last 24 hours, we try to spend as much time as possible in diving here. However, as my personal experience (since we are not allowed to dive in the last 24 hours before our flight out) snorkeling on the house reef is a very special experience. In one hour time, I saw maybe hundred different species, corals, lobsters, rays, anemone fish and so much...
Bungalows are nice, tidy and comfortable. Should you be spending more time relaxing on the beach, you may consider the bungalows on the north side of the pier.
Basically this place is an absolute "bare foot" place. Neither any shoes, nor any flip-flops are needed.
The food is nice and delicious. They serve both international and Indonesian cuisine, yet since I was in Indonesia, I always preferred to have Indonesian, which all are prepared with fresh ingredients, healthy and delicious. For anyone I will definitely recommend the coconut and mango sorbets, from daily harvest of the coconut and mango trees within the resort. They are unmatchable.
Long story short, great place, great people and great vacation...

Our first and certainly not the last trip to Wakatobi! Amazing dives - all the dive sites were simply gorgeous with rich and beautiful marine life. What makes the trip extremely memorable was the service we received. Our dive guide, Yusuf, was one of our best guides we have had, within our 12 years of diving. Our son just obtained his junior open water certification 2 months ago and this was his first dive trip. Yusuf was very patient and took really good care of him underwater, and after 9 dives, he is now a much more confident diver. Yusuf is very knowledgeable about the marine life and was always showing us the different beautiful and interesting sea creatures - Pygmy seahorses, leaf fish, crocodile flathead fish, scorpion fish, lion fish, sea snake, turtles… The restaurant team is also fantastic. Special thanks to Ibram and Diman, who noted our preferences of food and drinks. All these attention to details by the staff really makes our trip memorable. This level of personalised service is what sets Wakatobi dive resort apart from many of the other luxurious dive resorts we have been.

We will be back soon to this paradise island!

Excellent service from booking to departure. The greeting at DPS was a wonderful touch and helpful after a long international flight. The rooms are comfortable and private, and everything is only a short walk away. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and the staff was always ready to make any accommodation needed. The dive/snorkel staff are all wonderful and offer any assistance requested. As a snorkeler, I never felt like I was less important than the divers, and my guide was great at making sure I was seeing what I wanted to see. The reefs were beautiful and the marine life abundant. Almost everyone I met was a repeat visitor; Wakatobi makes you feel like part of the family. I hope to be back soon!

Wakatobi Dive Resort was excellent!! From the staff who were SUPER helpful and extremely friendly, to the damn tasty food, to the diving (including the amazing Dive crew) and one of the most amazing reefs I have seen, the week was flawless.

A lot of macro diving and not a lot of big stuff, but that really wasn’t a problem. I generally prefer big stuff, but this reef is special and very healthy which made for a number of new experiences and sightings for me, and I’ve done a fair bit of diving. I highly recommend putting this on your dive trip list!!
