Most of the hotels at Ngapali Beach are south of Thandwe Airport and there is a wide choice of accommodation. However, while the beach is generally ok, it is not a beach from which dreams are made. But if you go 10 minutes north from the airport you come to the most perfect white sand beach you have probably ever seen. In the middle of this beach is the Amara Ocean Resort. It is total luxury with only 24 ultra high quality mahogany bungalows located just off the beach and surrounded by incredible plants and trees. Stay here and there are about 150 staff looking after you. Don’t expect this level of luxury for nothing, however the affiliations last cost over the other quality hotels is worth it. Food and drink prices are European but you can eat BBQ fish on the beach just two minutes walk away, or there is a restaurant 1 KM away Summary - spend the little extra and stay here. You will never regret it!

Amara Ocean Resort was lovely, well decorated and equipped in a quiet part of Ngapali Beach. The beach and coastlines were pristine and amazingly picturesque. We had a nice stay at the resort for 5 days. What made our stay extra nice was the helps of Thur Tar Aung at the front desk. Tar Aung was very helpful and made our stay extra pleasant, from the moment we checked in, to helping to arrange our transportation needs, to the time when checking out. Thank you Tar Aung.

We stayed in this resort from 28 November till 1 December, inu bungalow 205. This is a small luxuous resort, located at the most beautiful beach Myanmar has to offer, with really great accomodation, built in a beautil garden, which are the main attractions of this place. The bungalows are really nice, spacious and clean, the best we have seen around the country soo far. Great interior, good beds, good pillows (!), large bathroom with shower, with all amenities you can imagine. It has a balcony with sea view. There is complimentary water, coffe and tea, a minibar, laudry service, safe, mosquito net. There is an infinity pool, with pool bar (no staff though) where you can enjoy the sunset. Pool beds are good with real asian umbrella’s and towels. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches we have seen so far. We were all alone on the beach. It is a pity there is no service at the pool nor on the beach. The pool bar was not attended and on the beach there is no service at all. This is a pity, since it is the most beautiful place to enjoy the sunset. The staff is chatting in the restaurant and were not really attentive while we were at the pool. For a 5* resort, one might expect more. Since the resort does not offer anything on the beach (only beds and umbrella’s), guests go to a beach bar close to the resort. We had lunch and two dinners at the restaurant of the resort. The menu offers a large variety on dishes, which were (almost) always very nice prepared and very tasty. The problem is the price : far too expensive. The price does not reflect the quality and service offered (starters 6-16 $, main course 12-30 $). Breakfast buffet is really nice and offers almost anything you can imagine. All sorts of coffee and tea can be ordered. The second and third day we were almost the only guests in the resort, and no buffet was offered, although we could order anything we liked. We enjoyed a 3 day package at the Spa : 1 hour scrubb, 1 hour massage of choise, 1 hour facial for 140 $. The massage and facial were ok, the scrub was inefficiënt (it took a long time to take the scrub off instead of showering, while the airco made us feel cold. Overall, this resort has the potential to be overwhelming in all aspects, but it only convices because of its location on the beautiful beach and because of the amazing bungalows. For a 5* resort of this price class, we expected better and more professional service. It remains a highly recommended place though.

The beach was gorgeous and the sunset was amazing!!! The room was great too. Very spacious and made with really nice wood. We only stayed here one night which was enough because the food was not great. What's interesting is each meal we have, the menu is the same but the prices changed. :P

We were the only ones in the whole of the resort as August is not the season to vaist..the best months are October- February.. the staff only works between 7am to 930 PM during non season months. So for 2 nights we are all alone on the resort. Super safe! The resort is beautiful to relax and unwind from stress. Since we are very close to nature at this resort, alot of big scary forest animals ( not dangerous but not nice) are there. I saw a big grey fat spider at 4am in the bathroom. Lack of fresh fruits as it's not the season. It rains almost every day and its beautiful. If you are a person who loves rain and wants to be away from heat, it's the best.. The beat is to take the beach front view. It has direct access to the beach. Swimming pool is big. Max 2 metres. Hospitality is very good. Best mean of transportation around the city is by tuktuk. It's cheap and can negotiate for the rest of the trips. We had one tuk tuk driver..would wait for us when we have dinner and bring us back to the resort. Very close to the airport. Local restaurants are way cheaper than the resort.. Some amazing restaurants are k2, 3 pots and all close to the resort. Sea queen is a bit costly as you choose your own catch.. but not bad in taste too.

Hi how far is the walk to the village? Are there restaurants & bars locally which we could visit?
If you mean the village by Ngapali Beach where the restaurants are, then it is 4 miles. The hotel does have bicycles you can use and a few of these are motorised. However, the first two miles (up to the airport) it is just a narrow, dirt road and incredibly bumpy even in the hotel's 4x4. Once you have reached the airport, the road improves but the drivers in Myanmar are terrifying and unpredictable. They sound their horns as they come up behind you, to let you know they are there, and then pass incredibly close to you. We were at Amara Ocean Resort for 9 nights and only once did we take visit Ngapali Beach which cost us US$30 return. We ate at a little restaurant on the beach and quite honestly we could have been at any resort in the Mediterranean - with beach sellers and sun burnt tourists. As you can hear - we were not impressed. The Amara is located on a very long, deserted beach and there were usually no more than about 6 or 8 people on it at any one time. The only advantage from that trip was that we were able to buy the excellent local gin (Royal) at US$1.5 (about £1) for a 70cl bottle. The tonic was £1 per can. If you like to have a number of drinks on your terrace there are a number of little shops at the airport just across the road from where you board your mini-bus for the hotel - but you have to be quick before the bus leaves! We found the menu at the Amara to be extensive enough for us to have something different every day. The portions are big and we usually just had a starter and a pudding - although there many lovely dishes both local and international (these tend to be more expensive). After the first couple of days, when we thought we should be doing something, we slipped into the luxury of doing absolutely nothing - except eating, drinking on our veranda and swimming in the warm sea - heaven!

How much money do I need for food and rink at the resport
Hi Johanna, we were there for four nights/ five days. We on average had a light lunch, plenty of pool side drinks and a nice dinner (but nothing over the top, ie champagne, lobster etc) and averaged about to $125 a day for two. That did include a 5hr fishing excursion and some treatments at the spa. The place isn't overly expensive but at the same time not cheap. I don't think you will find many beaches in South East Asia that are quite so untouched. When we were there, there were only 11 guests sharing a 2 mile beach. I hope that helps. Ps only down side is the service can be a bit slow, but the staff our very friendly.
