Setting fabulous- right on the beach with fantastic rooms and service. We are in the first night and paid 55USD for a simple meal. After that we explored the local restaurants and had better food at half the price. Very noisy over two night with amplified music from 05:00 to gone midnight for local community celebrations. This must be frequent as there is a notice in the room about it. Not the hotel’s fault - but a supply of earplugs would be a good idea. Very nicely kept gardens and a very good pool.
The highlight hotel of our visit to Myanmar and ticked every box. Ned the resident manager and his team have the Sandoway running beautifully. At the end of our stay it was impossible to pick out any member of staff who had not been absolutely superb in both attitude and ability. Everyone, including room service and security, had a smile on their face and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfasts alongside the beach were divine and bar service to our loungers on our immaculately maintained stretch of beach was speedy. Accommodation was stylish and comfortable and we didn't miss the absence of a TV. Despite it being a 4-star hotel, we'd rate it as nearer 5-stars.
I was so looking forward to a relaxing 4 days away from the busy streets of Yangon 20th Century Décor needs a facelift ! I haven’t felt compelled to write a TA report for a year or two, but our experience at the Sandoway Beach resort necessitated a review. To start with the good points. The reception was warm, the breakfast, lunch and drinks service was friendly. Even the movie theater was good fun (although a little odd to have one). The place was clean and the beach was spotless where the hotel looked after it. Now the not so good news. Opened in 1999, the place is showing its age and the Group really should think about refreshing their cottages as they certainly don’t (in my view) earn a 5 or 4 star. The cottages are constructed in dark wood; floors, walls, ceiling, furniture. There was precious little lighting and no spare plug sockets to charge phone/tablets etc. To charge your phone you have to unplug a light plunging you into even more gloom. We stayed a cottage one row back from the beach and there was no natural light in the cottage during the day….The furniture is clumsy and uncomfortable, there are two large stones acting as a footstools, not really relaxing. The bed (linen, pillows and mattress) were poor quality and we didn’t sleep well as a result. The shower room is in the same space as the wardrobe (no separating door), plus there’s no extractor fan, so your clothes become damp as does the whole cottage (including bedding).. Going out for the evening wearing damp clothes isn’t part of a 4-5 star experience Their website clearly states there are no TVs in their cottages, and I guess that’s why they have a cinema – but there is only one show a day at 9pm. This resort is described as a peaceful retreat and many people may enjoy the total lack of facilities… but I felt this place was far past its “sell by date” and the Group should seriously what their close competitors are offering by way of facilities at lower prices. I felt USD300+ was the least value for money I’ve experienced in year of travel across the region 20th Century Décor needs a facelift ! We stayed at the beach front bungalow B03. Great room, view of the garden, the beach and the sea. We loved the bathroom and the amenities. They try to be as sustainable as possible in such a remote area. Steel bottles with water dispensers, cute ceramic soap dispensers. The team is amazing, as all around Myanmar everyone was smiling. The minibar is reasonably priced. We will return. Thank you Sandoway Team.
We had a deluxe room, which is very big and perfectly confortable for 2 persons. The room is on 2 floors, the ground floor has a nice living room, a big closet and a large bathroom. The second floor has the beds and a mezzanine with 2 daybeds with large windows and nice view over the pool and sea. Also a nice terrace with table and transats. The pool is great, very big, the rooms and cottages are surrounded by a luxurious garden. The beach is beautiful and quiet, the water warm and clear. Nobody bothers you when you take a walk. The restaurant has mostly italian food due to the manager’s origin. There is also many choices of asian food and everything is good and well served. Beautiful breakfast buffet with a large choice. All of this with a sea front view. Of course the prices are more expensive than anywhere else in Myanmar but you can find many small cheaper restaurants around the resort. Staff is very helpful and friendly. The shuttle bus from and to the airport is a great experience! The bus is all in teck and nicely furnished :) …
