Sal is a friendly, helpful host and staying at his guest house gives a feeling of rural Jamaican life. He took good care of us and gave us lifts to town and good advice on the area. We stayed in the cheapest room, which was basic, but had all we needed. There is a little bar around the corner, which we visited and can recommend 😊

This place did not look like the photos at all. The garden was overgrown and the house was dirty. The bathroom was filthy too. The house is not in a good location. There are no taxi routes easily accessible and one is reliant on the owner for transport, which he charges for very trip and makes at his own convenience. There is nothing to do in the immediate vicinity either.
Not a good place to stay. Our experience was very different to the FOUR reviews.

DANGEROUS PLACE
NEVER STAY HERE

Overall my stay was okay. The issue was when I went to leave. Sal, the man who operates the house wanted money for my trip to a local rum distillery. We had never agreed any payment was necessary and he had led me to believe the drive was part of the service (with an expected tip) and when I argued with him he insisted on USD $50, despite the fact that this was was much more than the cost of my m accomodation for the night.

I had believed a fee of around 10 or 15 US would be applicable. We argued for some time and he offered a middle price. When I refused he became agitated. I put what I thought was reasonable on his coffee table (the cost of my accomodation and an additinal $15 USD equivalent in Jamaican dollars) and I made for the door. He blocked my exit and refused to move. When I tried to push past him he made an issue of the fact that I had touched him and was clearly acting like a victim for a German guest who was also watching from the couch. I recorded him in the doorway from my mobile phone in order to have evidence of the fact he wouldn't allow me to leave

He told me I had threatened him despite the fact I had made no threats and then he snatched my reading glasses off my face. I followed him to his kitchen asking for my glasses back. In the kitchen he picked up a metal pot lid and held it menacingly over my head, before pinning me against a wall physically and questioning if I now wanted to pay the full price. I still (perhaps stupidly) refused and he said he would call the police, which I had suggested previously to resolve the dispute. I agreed this was a good idea as I felt unsafe. I requested my glasses several times from Sal, who had stashed them in his pocket. I gave up on getting them back andvadvised that I would go outside to the front porch so that he couldn't trap me inside. He grabbed the door as I tried to exit and attempted to lock me inside but thankfully I squeezed past him despite his efforts to pull me inside with his legs.

I think my saving grace was that a couple showed up to make their checkin at this time. Suddenly Sal was all friendliness and welcomes. I was clearly upset and he obviously didn't want to ruin new business, so he reluctantly gave back my glasses, allowed me to leave (he still had the original money I had given him in his hand) and told another guest to drive me back to town.

He objected to my suggestion that he had been a bad man to me. I stand by it. I felt incredibly unsafe here and would never stay here again.

Sal was always friendly and courteous until it came to payment, but when we disagreed he was actually an incredibly scary man. I didn't make a police report but perhaps I should have.

I've been backpacking for close to 10 years now and this was the most terrified I have been in my travels. Please think carefully before staying here.

This place was just great! The host was super friendly, the area is nice and pretty quiet, the rooms are good, just overall great! For a little bit of money the host will taxi you, and make great breakfast! I would 10/10 recommend this place.
