We have stayed in the lodge building in a private room. The room is what you expect in a backpackers lodge, although the bugs in the bed wasn't expected. An other very annoying aspect is the bar opposite to the lodge where they have loud music until late night. Consider these if you want to book here.

Wife and I paid $80 a night for a double room. We are no strangers to hostels throughout NZ and know when a place is a rip off. We spent our next night in Wanaka at the YHA Purple Cow, so we can directly compare the two hostels. At Matterhorn, the front desk person seemed very disinterested, the kitchen was...

A basic but clean and well equipped hostel. I stayed here prior to the start of the winter season while I was looking for accommodation, and the place had such a lovely atmosphere, and was very sociable. The staff were very good at asking guests in communal areas to stay quiet after 10pm making it more comfortable for all guests....

Awful experience - cannot comment on the main hostel, or the hostel we were put up in as we didn't hang around for longer than 5 minutes. When we first arrived staff were accommodating and helpful and we weren't told we were being put in their other hostel 10 minutes away, and that we would be the only residents. Arrived...

Great staff who helped us check in and out and also look for jobs in the area! Very very helpful in that field. Great stay in the hobbit hut in the backpackers which is a cozy little double room for only 70 a night which is very reasonable in wanaka!! The only thing is there are only 2 toilets to...

Stayed here for a couple nights in beautiful Wanaka. The hostel is in a good location just minutes from the lake and a short drive from most walks and lookouts. The kitchen area is decent, the wifi was poor and the room was very cramped. We stayed in a 6 bed dorm which was clearly only big enough for 4...

Good service. Reasonable size room with comfortable bed. Walking distance to lake. Kitchen facilities however were not the cleanest. Only one washing machine that can only be used from 9 to 9 which made it difficult to use it when you wanted.

Really enjoyed my time at the Matterhorn. I stayed over the Christmas period and felt very at ease and welcome from the moment I arrived. Matt, on the front desk was very friendly and helpful. I'd def stay here again. Nice backyard area to chill out and read a book!

The Matterhorn South Lodge and Backpackers is a minimalist establishment that provided accommodations for the group of 10 girls that I was traveling with. Upon arrival the staff seemed friendly and accommodating. However, the reception staff charged the credit card on hold prematurely due to the fact that we had been gone all day thinking that we had already left....

I'd say it's fine but nothing special. Rooms are clean and you get a bath towel which is nice, but 6 bed dorm pretty tight on storage space. Kitchen is well equipped but there isn't a lounge area, so the hostel lacked atmosphere. Reasonably priced though.

Thankyou for your feedback Caitlin, Sorry i have just read this. Your en-suite dorm room was in the Lodge building where this is a communal TV Lounge upstairs and there is a lounge area in the backpacker building too. I'm sorry if these where not pointed out to you when you where shown around. I usually do make a point...
