We had a nice 4 night stay at this hotel. The staff were very welcoming and attentive the whole time we were there. The rooms were clean with updated bathrooms everything was in working order. The grounds are kept meticulously for the guests. The beach is nice but due to tides only swimmable part of the time but pool is nice too. There are plenty of loungers. Breakfast buffet was decent. We had half-board which offered several choices for a 3 course meal every night. Food was good quality. The hotel has a spa which offers great deals on massage, talk to Mo! If I could improve anything I would find a way to keep the pool water a little cooler.

Stayed @ Smiles Beach Hotel for 3 nights, 4 days. Meal plan was Half board (Breakfast & Dinner). Road Access The road to the hotel starts off ok, but towards the middle has HUGE pot holes and after a rain it’s completely filled up with mud. The driver has to move very slowly to avoid any damage to the car. On arrival On arrival we were greeted warmly with a nice cold drink, check in was quick and we were taken to our rooms. We booked 2 rooms. Both were located upstairs but not in the same building. To get to the rooms we have to climb a spiral staircase. Rooms The upper floor has 2 rooms side by side. The room door is a split door with a sliding lock and a padlock. There were a few outdoor furniture in the balcony area. The room itself looked very clean and smelled clean. Coffee & tea station, LCD TV, Mini Fridge, Safety deposit box. The bed is built into the room walls. The orientation of the bed is weird. I am an average height guy, 5’8”, and when I lie down to sleep, from my ankle down is off the bed. But if the bed was orientated the other way, there would be more than enough room. The rooms are old and needs some TLC, ceiling is wood and black dirt keeps falling from the cracks. We were told that the room service will come over around 7.30 at every night to “turn d own” the room. Technically, spray some bug spray outside the room door and setup the mosquito nets. From our 3 nights, this happened only on the last day. That too, the net had a 1cm hole. Bathroom Pretty large bathroom, basic toiletries available (No body lotion or dental kit). The toilets are clean. The sink is a little on the high side. If there are children, it’s a bit hard to reach to brush teeth etc. Garden, pool and private beach front Garden is kept very neat and tidy. We saw a gardener every morning sweeping the grounds. Pool is clean. The tiles on the outside of the pool were cracked and need to be careful while walking. Especially with bare feet. Private beach front is nice and clean. Its, on a higher elevation so you get a nice view. Hawkers and Masai beach boys The are friendly, but can become a bit annoying after some time. So best advice is to be polite, say no thank you. (they are not allowed in the private beach area) Food & Restaurant Breakfast was not bad, it’s a buffet style menu and had a decent variety, each morning something different. Sometimes in the morning there a few flies around and will hover over the fresh fruit. Dinner was a la carte menu and different for each day as well. The downside is that the food quality drops when they have more occupancy. The biggest issue we had was the meal service times. We had to wait almost 1 hour between entree and main and another 45 min for dessert. This was the case every day. There are few felines (cats) inside the restaurant premises. They roam freely and sometimes come and rub themselves on your legs. There were a few other guests that were not very comfortable with this. Also note this is an Alcohol Free Hotel. You have to go elsewhere for a cold one!. Staff All the staff are very friendly and polite. They genuinely try their best to make your stay a good one. Final thoughts With all this being said, I personally will not recommend the hotel. It’s not worth the money spent. Food can be better and rooms definitely need TLC. The beach view and the private beach are the only plus.

We have been very pleased with all. The room was very clean, people were friendly, the resort is just way better then you can find in any pics. Pool is very nice and clean. The same private beach and food place were very nice and clean. A small paradise! Hope we come back one day. The diversity of food can be improved.

We enjoyed our stay here. All rooms overlook a sandy garden / beach with sun loungers. Easy to go swimming in the crystal clear waters by this beach. There is also a swimming pool if you fancy a change from the sea. The rooms are large with a very comfortable bed and good bathrooms too. We were on half board and found the food very fresh and tasty, especially the fish and seafood dishes. Would have been good if you could buy some beer or wine from the restaurant to have with the meal. Only negative was that the service in the restaurant was sometimes very slow and the staff seemed confused about their tasks.

We never even were able to check in to this hotel. They completely were unreachable days before our booking and left us to find a new hotel at 3am while already in Zanzibar because they wouldn’t answer phone calls, emails, WhatsApp etc. It has been a week now and they still haven’t even replied to my messages. Even our booking agent tried to contact them and they were unable! Completely unreliable. Unprofessional. 0 communication. We lost 100USD due to Hotwire cancellation fees and we were never even able to check in. What a waste of money.

I have been a customer of Smiles for several years and I even wrote very good reviews here. However, over the last two years, things got extremely terrible. I always preferred to spend at smiles because of its wonderful location but this beautiful place has been just left to the management of an irresponsible, reckless and unprofessional guy named Hamis. I don’t understand why the owner lets his property be managed by this guy for this long despite negative comments here. He could overbook the hotel and in the last minute, tell you that he doesn’t have rooms despite your prior bookings. You write to him and doesn’t respond or take responsibility for mishaps that may occur. So I don’t advise anyone to book in this hotel until the owner puts someone who is more responsible and professional.

The hotel was beatiful, the rooms were clean and overall good view from the room. however, the service was not the best. the safe in our room was broken and it took them more than a day to address it. the wifi went out and them were very slow to react and we stayed an entire day without internet. a lot of the staff does not speak English and we had a lot of problems talking with them. we came because we saw people praising the beach but it was not the best I have seen and you can only enjoy it for a couple of hours in the middle of the day, so we didn't even get to fully enjoy it. the restaurant also was a mess, the food didn't taste good and the menu is very limited. we only ate there because we didn't want to carry around money with us and look for a different restaurant. also the crows kept pooping on the tables. overall, the stay was okay but very average, and there's a lot of cheaper and better options around zanzibar.

I really enjoyed our stay. Comfortable and clean rooms, clean pool, room service every day, all the rooms with sea view and balcony. Breakfast and dinner was also very nice, I has some doubts because there were some negative comments about the food but I really enjoyed it. The only thing is there was a low tide after 12.00 and we had to walk around 10 minutes in order to swim in the afternoon but it was not a problem for us. Very very good experience.

Small intimate hotel, with a private beautiful beach, I think the best beach in Zanzibar. Very clean. The room was large, comfortable beds. Mosquito nets were folded out over the bed every day. Staff very helpful, always smiling. Food good, not much choice but tasty. The pool is not big, cleaned daily. There is place to play volleyball. The hotel has security, We felt very safe there.

When we arrived for check-in we where told that our rooms where cancelled a long time ago. When we questioned this, they had no good explanation for what happened. When we asked for a written confirmation explaining that our rooms where cancelled to send to our travel agent for a refund, they initially refused, but agreed to write a note after 30 minutes of arguing. Not helpful at all
