Baglio Villa Sicilia is a fascinating period residence with pool situated in the countryside just outside Selinunte. The prestigious villa, which dates back to the second half of the 18th century, rests in the lands of the ancient Greek quarries, close to the acropolis of Selinunte, the Temple of Dionysus, and the private beach lapped by the crystal clear sea of Selinunte.

This is one of those cases when you look for a host and you find a friend. Emerico is the man of many passions. His Villa Sicilia is just one of them. It is a charming farmhouse beautifully restored with sense of art and history but it does not lack modern luxuries and a pool. The villa is conveniently located in the south west part of the island allowing daily trips to Palermo, Trapani, Marsala or Erice. It sits in the middle of expansive olive grove which is another of Emerico’s passions. He explained olive oil production secrets and backed it up with olive oil tasting evening. Food and wine are yet another of Emerico’s passions with full support of Assunta, a true Sicilian chef. Last but not least Emerico is an expert in Sicilian history and architecture. His tour of the local quarry and temples was one of the best tours we ever had. So, if you are after a conveniently located yet secluded, true Sicilian countryside retreat with a great wine and food spiced with local history and sweetened with Emerico’s and Assunta’s company, Villa Sicilia is the place for you.

If you want to experience the real countryside of southern Sicily then this is the place. Order a dinner just for you, the real Sicilian cuisine, and dine under the stars with the sea in the distance. You don't get to do this every day. And the owner, Amerigo Amari, couldn't do enough for us, a charming Sicilian gentleman. Memorable.

My name is Tim O'Brien.

This is my 3rd time here at Villa Sicilia in two years. And it will not be my last.

Two weeks ago, I was with dear friends at dinner in a special place called Ciboure. In France, just south of Biarritz. We were discussing our favorite hotels in the World. Mine. I said, is Le Bristol, in Paris.

I am 50. Am from NYC, and have lived for many years abroad for work....Brazil, Switzerland, Spain. And have also travelled around this planet of ours to many other dozens of countries.

I arrived here again 3 days ago. And, while sipping a glass of delicious white wine produced by my host, and friend, Emerico Amari, it struck me.... Actually, I believe we all in Ciboure, around the table, missed the point. The question should have been "Where in the World is your favorite place to be. To stay?"

It is here.

Throw an olive in the most magnificent saltwater infinity pool. It creates circles. For me the three I see first represent:

1) The trees. Green and alive.
2) The stone architecture. The walls. The color of gold, that drink the sun.
3) The peace and sense of being at home.

These have been created with love. With passion. By a dreamer. One who makes dreams come true. And shares with others. Emerico Amari. Generosity of Spirit.

Villa Sicilia is a small, yet magnificent place. My "room"...really a suite...is beautifully appointed. Every little detail I see, I know was a decision. The authenticity of the history is present in everthing.

Then there is the food! Assunta is her name. Your own private chef. A quiet, kind and gentle woman. She creates delicious dishes...of your choice from an ample menu of dishes, some local specialities, some international favorites (incredible chicken or fish cous cous!). Homemade pasta. Local produce and fish and meats. All fresh everyday, based on your wish. She is proud, yet humble, of her creations.

I look forward to every meal. And sharing with old...and new friends I have made here. Sitting outside embraced by the olive trees. Sun dancing through. Or under the stars, crickets speak as our music.

I am now looking over the 20,000 olive trees to the Sea. And I see the three Greek temples. Radiant gold as the sun sets. Strong and proud. No where on Earth are there such important artifacts than here. Selinunte is were we were born. So much to do and see within a stones throw!

It is a blessing for me to have had these times here.

Time for dinner shortly. I must get ready. A magical evening awaits.

Thank you, Emerico and your lovely family.

Set in the midst of working vineyards and olive groves is this luxuriously restored 3000 year old farmhouse owned by an an ancient noble Sicilian family. We were welcomed by the gracious and charming owner, Emerico Amari whose family has owned these lands for almost 1000 years. The Amaris were also the owners of the fantastic ancient "Cusa" quarries which supplied the stone for the temples at Selenunte 2500 years ago. These are an absolute must to visit and a once in a lifetime experience if you have the good fortune to be accompanied by Emerico. The quarries are a part of his family's history and he brings a passion and knowledge to the visit that is unparalleled. We were also very lucky to have Emerico accompany us to Selenunte; probably the single best visit to a major archaeological site that we have experienced anywhere in the world. This was almost entirely due to Americo's guidance and deeply knowledgeable explanations of what we were seeing. The experience was enhanced by the perfect weather and by the total absence of other visitors both at the Selenunte Temples and at the Cusa Quarries. Our visits to the Acropolis, the Roman Forum, the Taj Mahal, Ankgor Wat and Pompeii were all fascinating but somewhat diminished by hordes of tourists. Selinunte is different, especially off season,. It is a bit off the beaten track, It has not yet been fully discovered and there is very little tourism infrastructure in the immediate area.

The Villa Sicilia Baglio is virtually unique in that it offers a lovely historic retreat and a charming and interesting host. The Villa itself is comprised of 5 separate rooms restored to standards of high luxury although guests with limited mobility should enquire about room assignment before booking due to steep stone stairs in some rooms. There is a large inviting salt water pool which we did not have time to try.

During good weather, which is most of the year, meals are served alfresco. Since early mornings and evenings were chilly when we were there, meals were served in the beautiful old, tiled kitchen. Meals are individually and expertly prepared by Assunta whose Raviolini and Cannoli pastries were by far, the best we have ever experienced.

The Villa is about an hour from Palermo airport thirty minutes from Segesta and 90 minutes from the temples at Agrigento.

We arrived at the Villa Sicilia on November, 7, 2015, it was our second visit to the Baglio, and we spent 4 glorious nights. We have stayed here before 7 or so years ago and loved it and wanted to return, it surpassed our first trip which we felt was excellent. Every night we dined in a new outdoor dining room, which is so romantic, quiet and absolutely beautiful. You have the option of ordering your dinner every morning, and my husband and I who travel throughout Italy felt that the food prepared by Asunta the Host's cook was better than any we have had in Italy. Our room was quiet, clean, beautiful with a distant view of the temples of Selinunte. Our host Emerico Amara, was so thoughtful and helpful and gave us many tips on what to do and where to go. He also makes a delicious extra virgin olive oil, which you can buy. I totally recommend the Villa Sicilia, and we plan on returning next year. He also makes excellent white wine, Grillo.

We stayed here for 1 night in July. The property is very difficult to find and access is more complicated as you enter via another property after lots of intercom communication to get the gates opened.
The property is an upmarket farmhouse. It really is a notch up from agritourism but the prices are hugely overpriced for what I would describe as rustic accommodation. We were paying about €500 per day. It would be worth in my opinion €150. The owner is quite charming but i feel has little grasp on reality when it comes to charging. It is very remote and you had to make arrangements of when you would return so there would be someone to let you in. This is not suitable as we are on holiday and want some flexibility and not stuck to a timetable.
We arranged dinner which was vastly expensive. Excellent but compared to similar meals in Sicily it was double the costs even of 5 star restaurants.
However it is the room that was a disaster. When it came to sleeping the bed was in an mezzanine level, basically in the roof . It was stifling hot. Although there was air conditioning it only worked (badly) on the ground level and none of the air reached the bedroom. There was a small thin rail about 6 inches high to stop you rolling off the bed falling to the ground floor. This would not be acceptable in US or UK safety standards. After a sleepless night we left the following day and cut our trip here short.
It is hard to believe but AC is an addition to the room rate.... really!
There are no facilities you might expect for the price, like a bottle of water (an extra €4 from a kitchen fridge, everywhere else we stayed provided 2 free litres a day), no nice toiletries - a small sample size Dove. Rough wooden furniture and totally basic fixtures and fittings like a basic tv. It reminded me of French gites in 1990s, with London or New York current pricing.
This was meant to be one of the highlights and we were bitterly disappointed with the experience sadly.
Finally the pool in the photos appears to be co located to the property. The reality is it is tagged on at the end where you climb 6 stairs walk along a wall and down 6 stairs. Then walk across a shoddy grass area to arrive at a pool that resembles a septic tank filled with algae.
Get real on prices and standards.

As part of our continuing circumnavigation of Sicily, see, e.g. our recent reviews of Hotel Villa Ducale and Eremo della Giubiliana, we booked four nights at Villa Sicilia, a property advertised as a luxury resort located on a 200+ acre olive estate near Selinute. The website, several magazine articles, TripAdvisor contributors, and the high-end price gave us the impression that Villa Sicilia was something that it is not.

The farm house was indeed refurbished, and the room we stayed in was comparable to a 3-4 star Sicilian hotel. However, €320 a night is 5 star territory in Sicily, and one would expect a more refined experience like not paying extra for air conditioning (ultimately, we were not charged), hot water 24/7 (we were told that there was a leak in the line, so the hot water was only available first thing in the morning, or when requested!), or the web-site promised view of “temples and sea”. Yes, if you stand on the highest point of the structure, you can faintly see specks on the horizon that are the temples of Selinute – a recent TripAdvisor reviewer claimed that the infinity pool “overlooks” the Selinunte ruins. Only with a good pair of binoculars. Not possible to view the sea, only the electric substation and power lines cutting across the olive groves. Also at odds with the website, there was no internet – we were told the cables were stolen the week before we arrived. And, notwithstanding that our reservation confirmed a suite with a “… living room which communicates with the terraces, the garden, the courtyard and the pool”, we were first shown only a bedroom and had to negotiate to have access to an adjoining room that had a large dining table, not really a living room. Hard to say what was going on here. Had our suite been given to other guests? Only three of the rooms/suites appeared to be occupied during our stay, so we really don’t know.

But, it must be noted that the owner, Emerico Amari, is a truly charming gentleman with great knowledge of the area and passion for its history. He did constantly check in with us to make sure that we were content, or that he had adequately addressed our needs – like turning on the hot water (!), or recommending nearby restaurants. He also graciously gave us a tour of his family’s house, located on the estate; and on the day we departed, he insisted on giving us a tour of the nearby Cusa “cave”, the stone quarry source for all of Selinute temples. According to his website, the tour would normally cost several hundred euros.

Last, Villa Sicilia did have a full-time chef, who prepared authentic, quality, home-style meals if you ordered in advance. Our only concern was that they were fairly expensive in view of what we paid at local restaurants (as they were pre-ordered, there was no waste for the kitchen to contend with); and the very well meaning and eager staff consistently served all the food simultaneously – wine, salad, main course, etc.

Villa Sicilia is an acquired taste, and if it were priced at €150/night, for example, it might be right for a smell the roses, multi-week stay semi-rural experience. One group of Italian guests was staying for a long time and seemed content with the quirky attributes of Villa Sicilia. Perhaps they were not paying €320/night -- wire transferred in advance.

We stayed here for 3 nights earlier this month and fell in love with the place as soon as we arrived. Emerico is the perfect host and nothing in too much trouble for him. As well he is an authority on the local area and even though we didn't go to the archeological site here (we went to Agrigento instead) after his description and enthusiasm we felt we should have allowed more time in this beautiful area. It is set amongst 20,000 olive trees which were due to be harvested the week after we left. After a couple of days in Palermo it was the perfect place to wind down and relax.
The property has been restored beautifully and the rooms are wonderful. Emerico has wonderful design sense and the rooms have been restored to the highest level, if a little precarious in the middle of the night if you want to go downstairs from the mezzanine bedroom.
As we were the only ones staying there we were very well looked after and spoilt by Assunta, the chef. To sit in an olive grove at a candle lit table at night and be served the most wonderful Sicilian dishes was an experience never to be forgotten. The peace and quiet was so amazing.
As well it is well situated to explore the local area, like Mazara del Vallo on the coast.
We would love to return and spend more time at this wonderful property.

Villa Sicilia is an oasis, a slice of the divine. It is Sicily at its serene and tranquil best. And for three glorious days, it was ours to savor.

Beyond an unmarked gate and unpaved road, set amidst parched blonde earth and lush olive groves lies this enchanted retreat. Within its walls of golden stone, you’ll find a seamless blending of ancient and new in perfect harmony with the sunbaked landscape and Technicolor sky. Behold an archway, a fountain, an iron gate, sprays of magenta flowers, trees rife with fruit and almonds, smooth stone underfoot, steps leading here and there, patios for sitting and dining. Our villa suite– whitewashed with stone, dark beams and floors of pale terra cotta. Pristine yet rustic, beautifully appointed, cosy and comfortable. Oh and the infinity pool set above the olive grove...perfection.

Breakfast was under the shade of trees. Two dinners were by candlelight under the stars— (all exquisitely prepared by Assunta and served with a smile by Bartolomeo and Gasparo).

Villa Sicilia Baglio is the realized dream of Emerico Amari whose family can trace its roots in Selinunte for six centuries. The whole experience of Villa Sicilia Baglio is a tribute to Emerico’s passion for history, astute creative vision and graciousness as a host. Do take the tour of the quarry, Cave di Cusa and ruins of Selinunte with Emerico. It is not to be missed.

Emerico has championed this little corner of Sicily and we know why. Our senses were filled at every moment with the sights, sounds, flavors, and peaceful feel of the place. And what’s more, my husband and I had the space to reconnect with ourselves and each other. We will return.

We arrived a bit disoriented because there are no signs or indications that Villa Sicilia exists. (Please pay attention to the email you will receive for directions!) But once we started down the narrow dirt road flanked by a stone wall to the property, our worries melted away. Quite simply, the property is beautiful. It's a heavenly mix of local history, museum, modern architecture all constructed around the loosely flowing olive trees. You will duck under, step through, and skirt around olive trees, almonds, figs, grapes. The trees are as much of the building as the stones themselves. It's a lovely effect. The building is historical with some modern improvements. You will live in pieces and parts from ancient Sicily to today, and all eras in-between.
Emerico is as much a part of this property as the trees. He is a wealth of information about the history and art of the area. For the interested, he will direct you to some lesser-known artifacts in the area, discuss the long history of his property, tell you what to look for at Selinunte, and show you the ancient water basins. He will also enlighten you on the beauty of the ephebus, of which he has a personal connection.
We were the only ones who stayed the night. Wish we had stayed longer. Food was great. (Please try the olives Emerico produces on-property) Rooms were gorgeous.

Highly recommended.
