We had a most excellent stay at Pico do Refugio. We had a loft. The facilities lovely; beautiful views and peaceful. It was hi on a hill in an old orange plantation building. The loft is well designed. It was clean and furnished nicely. Would recommend an area rug in the living room area because the mornings are chilly (in February). The kitchen was fine, but should have A COFFEE MAKER. There was an Italian moka induction pot that worked very well, but for many people who don’t understand how to use this type of pot it may be problematic. There should be a small electric drip pot available. There should be a drain board provided at the kitchen sink. Just note: this is not a place for children or people who have trouble with stairs. The stairs to the loft/bedroom are without a railing. There could be some minor cosmetic repairs to the room and the exterior of the buildings; paint touch-up on trim, etc. The check in was easy and punctual. Joao, was very nice, knowledgeable and helpful. He recommend restaurants and places to visit and made dinner reservations for us. He was spot on about places to eat! Overall, our stay was lovely and we would recommend it to others.

Nice people. Rustic charm. Artistic flair. But the room (#1) was very dark, a bit too many flies and some crawling worms. Upstairs bedroom does not have bathroom. The king size bed was divided by two singles. Breakfast was ample but plain.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Our room was located at the top of the hill near the main house- the view from there as well as the walk down to the street was so beautiful. The room itself was exquisite, it had everything we needed and then some. The staff were also wonderful - they were so helpful and friendly whenever we needed anything. I can't thank them enough!

It is difficult to write a review for this place as it is just so wonderfully unique and cannot really be compared to a hotel. We stayed at Casa dos Coches which is one of the two units at the top of the hill and can’t say enough about how much we loved our unit. It is one of the smaller lofts but perfect for two people. I would say that if you have any mobility issues, you may want not want to stay here as there are stairs to the loft bedroom and the stairs do not have a railing. The loft is wonderfully private with its own little garden and patio (lots of birds and rabbits!). The drive to and from the top of the hill was always a joy as the views are so spectacular. The kitchen was great and had all the necessities that enabled us to cook a couple of nights. The building is converted with original walls so there is no centralized heating. However there is a wood fireplace in the unit for the cool nights and mornings and we were always quite cozy. Plenty of hot water. The daily cleaning service included washing our dishes and fresh towels. We had breakfast (plenty for two people) delivered a few times and really enjoyed the convenience especially while we were getting over the jetlag. The TV had lots of channels and even a great movie channel for the quiet evenings. Ricardo who manages the property was very friendly and helpful in giving tips and advice on what to do and see. Our stay was pretty much perfect and exceeded our expectations. I would say that this is special because it is NOT your typical hotel. We hope to return to this amazing place someday.

The pictures of Pico do Refugio looked beautiful online and it didn’t disappoint. The grounds are stunning. Our apartment, #4, was perfect for a couple. We lit a fire 2 of the nights. Ricardo, who checked us in and out, could not have been nicer and recommended 2 amazing hikes and great restaurants. The location is perfect-35 minutes to Sete Cidades, 10 minutes to Ribeira Grande and 15 minutes to Ponta Delgada. We are so glad we stayed here and if we return to the Azores, would only stay here again!
