My second stay at the best B&B I've ever been to.
Ian and Kate are always very welcoming and helpful from the moment I arrived to the moment I left.
The house and bedroom are spotless and cosy.
As for the breakfast, it's absolutely delicious with so much choice.

I stayed at the Old School House in June 2021 while walking Hadrian’s Wall. Haltwhistle is about two miles off the route but easily accessible and the walk is downhill along pleasant country lanes. There is also a very nice pub about halfway. A lift is available for the weary if necessary. The following morning, I was given a lift back to the Wall which was really welcomed. The detour from the Wall should NOT deter those hiking the Wall from staying here. This is a very special place indeed.
I cannot praise the Old School House and its owners, Kate and Ian, enough. I arrived tired on a hot June day and was immediately given the warmest welcome by them both. Upon arrival I was offered (and accepted) an ice-cold beer and a piece of Ian’s delicious home-made cake which I took in the comfortable and homely residents’ lounge.
This place is exceptionally clean throughout, and I mean exceptionally. It is simply a wonderful place to stay. My bedroom was bright and airy, the large bathroom was clinically clean, and this old building has been beautifully modernised and decorated.
The breakfast I took here was cooked to perfection. There was a huge selection also which is a rarity.
I have stayed in Guest Houses / B & B’s regularly in this country over the last 50 years and I can honestly say that the Old School House is quite exceptional. It is evident that Kate and Ian have invested an enormous amount of time and energy into making this accommodation a cut above, and they have achieved just that. The house itself is beautiful, and Kate and Ian cannot do enough to accommodate their guests cheerfully and comfortably. Nothing appears to be too much trouble for them. This wonderful couple were so kind to me and extended to me such warm hospitality. I do not think that I have ever met such genuinely welcoming, cheerful and sincere hosts.
My stay here was simply wonderful after a hard day walking the Wall. Everything about this accommodation is top drawer. There is even a guest washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge. It is about a two-minute walk from the centre of town and even less to the local Sainsburys for those needing to stock up on items for the Walk. Without any reservations I would highly recommend this place to anyone, whether walkers or not.

The Old School House is an excellent place to stay. We were met by Ian & Kate, the owners , who showed us to our rooms making sure they assisted us with our luggage. Room quality and bathrooms were pristine with new beds and furnishings and even a slice of homemade cake each day , together with all tea & coffee making equipment. Breakfast choices were extensive , with chef specials on the menu list and again quality and service was first class. Location was easy both to facilities in the village, starting points for walks and drives to local points of interest. The owner even assisted with excellent washing , drying and ironing facilities. Parking is private and safe.
This was definitely the best B&B we have ever stayed at.

This bed and breakfast ticks all the boxes. For walkers and bikers, the bright and airy entrance lobby is a boon for unhurried boot and coat removal especially in bad weather. Inside the welcoming open plan lounge and huge dining table tempt you to stay far longer. Upstairs there is a dedicated drying room for wet gear. Ian and Kate are lovely and attentive hosts and have done a great job with this attractive, rather quirky building. Breakfast is top drawer and currently well organized to observe Covid-19 restraints. Although we did not need their help on this occasion, Ian and Kate are willing to pick up and drop off guests at points on nearby walking and cycling trails. Another bonus is the small Sainsburys supermarket nearby for any supplies needed.

This is a very well-maintained B&B in the lovely small town of Haltwhistle and makes an ideal base if you are wishing to explore Hadrian’s wall and the Northumberland National Park. The hosts, Ian and Kate, were very welcoming, we were even given a delicious slice of homemade cake on arrival, and every provision was catered for. Everything in the accommodation was of a very high standard, our bathroom was pristine. It was excellent value for money and included delicious breakfast options (including vegetarian). My only wish is that we’d stayed longer!

Absolutely the warmest welcome from Ian and Kate. My son booked this as a birthday surprise and can’t thank him enough for this wonderful surprise.

Room was spotless, faultless very comfortable with excellent selection of top quality coffee and teas, fresh milk

Breakfast was fantastic, home cooked fresh locally sourced full breakfast and a choice of eggs Benedict, Florentine and smoked salmon etc, fresh home baked chocolate banana muffins and lemon drizzle cake. Brilliant hosts and facilities.

I stayed here for 2 nights whilst travelling with friends to walk a part of Hadrian’s Wall. Firstly this is a great location for the walk, central for the 26 miles we covered. Secondly, our hosts are the loveliest of people running a very friendly B&B with incredibly comfortable rooms that have many touches of quality and luxury.

There is a very homely comfortable lounge area with lots of books, a TV and dining table so I could gather with my companions to chat, research our walk and have a take away and drink.

The breakfasts included in the price of the room were very tasty and top quality and also kept us going for most of the day. The homemade cake left by the bedside was a real treat, lemon drizzle one day and the nicest, chewiest cookies the next.

The rooms are really clean and comfortable with plenty of space and the bathroom was modern and roomy.

Ian and Kate are very friendly and welcoming hosts who are happy to do as much as they can to make your stay a great one. I can highly recommend this property and you too will find you’ve found yourself a gem!

Easy to book in on the website, and the hosts would have been happy to pick us up from the town centre, though we chose to walk the short distance from the station. The guests reading room was well equipped with an eclectic selection of books and a wood fire.

The room was clean, a decent size with comfortable beds, warm enough, but not stuffy. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, and had the usual selection of products.

A large cooked breakfast was on offer in the morning, and we spent a couple of hours relaxing reading the papers before we set off for the rest of our day.

A great place to stay, and welcoming hosts.

Wow where to start reviewing this b&b, check in was efficient and so warm and welcoming, we were accompanied to our room and highlighted how everything worked etc, we were also shown the fantastically comfortable lounge area with comfy sofas and chairs, a plethora of books, magazines and different kinds of music, blankets, throws and cushions, a real home from home feel, guests are encouraged to use the lounge and make themselves comfortable which we certainly did. In our room was excellent quality tea, coffee and home made cookies! icing on the cake was fresh milk bottle in a fridge. Down the hall was a guest area with another small fridge, washing and drying facilities and large sink. Our twin room was well equipped and well planned to maximise space with lovely furnishings, the bathroom also was very modern with everything being spotlessly clean. Then came breakfast, the highlight of our stay, there was cereal, home made granola, fresh good quality juices, fresh fruit and yogurt all to help yourself from and plenty of them including gluten free choices. Then cooked to order a range of cooked breakfast items, I opted for a gluten free cooked breakfast which included gf sausage, which was excellent quality and a rarity on cooked breakfast which are gf. My friend had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. There was as much home made toast and jam as we could wish for and a very relaxed atmosphere at breakfast with lovely large communal dining table. Both guests being experienced travellers we were blown away by the hospitality and quality of food and service at this special little place. Since staying I’ve recommended to friends and family and will definitely return and share the experience with others. Well done The Old School House, you have an absolute gem which is down to your attention to detail and excellent hospitality.

There were 5 of us in our party (sadly all men in their late middle age) and our stay in Haltwhistle marked roughly the half way point in our 84 mile coast to coast trek over 6 days/7 nights. From the beginning, and throughout, we were treated like family by our hosts, Ian & Kate, who collected us from a nearby pub, made us feel most welcome upon arrival and the standard of accommodation was at least that of a 4 /5 star hotel, clean, comfortable and luxurious. The breakfast cooked mainly by Ian, with expert "waitress" service by Kate was excellent, a buffet beautifully set out and the cooked food delicious. I even left my water bottle behind by mistake and received a call from them offering to hand it over at our next stop even though that was some 15 miles away. By far the best stopover on our trek (which included some top quality hotels) and one of the most reasonable for the standard offered. Nothing was too much trouble for this couple and we would definitely stay there again if in the area.
