Detailed Reviews
We spent a two night stay on the property, it is reasonably priced and the kitchen was well equipped however we definitely felt misled. On the website it showed the hermitage cottage had a fire place which was not borded up and looked very inviting to use, to our suprise we arrived at the hermitage and the fire place is completely borded up and unavailable for use, the cottage at night was freezing and the air conditioner only warmed the kitchen area. The carpeting on the floors in the lounge room and leading up to the bedroom have been so poorely done they look like floor mats, which move when you walk. We were given two pieces of firewood for 2 nights which wasn't sufficient for the firepit. The property doesn't seem very secure and neither were the locks on the door they were loose and you had to fiddle with them to lock them.
If you are looking for a budget friendly trip with simple amenities, minimal security and warmth then this is your place to be. The best thing about this place was waking up and drinking coffee on the porch watching the kangaroos near by and being able to cook some home cooked meals.

We were delighted to spend a 2 day girls trip at The Hunter Hideaway Cottages. Paul was extremely easy to deal with and the communication from the time we booked was fantastic.
We stayed in The Chardonnay. We were really impressed with how private and serene it was. The cabins are spaced really far apart and the deck faces into the bush so we did not see anyone our whole stay. It felt like we were really secluded yet we were so close to visit the Wineries. The best place to unwind and de stress and enjoy a few wines and songs without worrying you were annoying anyone.
It was lovely to wake up to kangaroos grazing in the paddock. The cabin was basic but clean, tidy and comfortable.
We will definitely be staying again.
Thanks Paul.

We really enjoyed our stay in the Merlot cottage. The cottage was quaint and cute, and the air conditioner kept us warm on the rainy days (there is also a fireplace but unfortunately this wasn’t working during our stay). The cottage has all the facilities you need for cooking, and a great little porch and bench outside for relaxing. Finally the natural surroundings are beautiful, we loved waking up to all the kangaroos around in the mornings. All in all great value for the price. Paul was easy to communicate with. Thanks Paul!

We stayed on the weekend for my birthday. As soon as we walked in the place just felt awful. The carpet tiles were dirty, i had to wipe the fridge, there was food left next to the bin and a dirty sponge left for us from previous guests. The teatowels may have been washed but needed to be chucked. There were stains on the pillow cases and smear marks all over the door from previous guests. i had to wipe down the table again as it was grimy. The BBQ just looked awful (not even sure if it was clean). The outdoor chairs were old and a smoking pot and old ratty table near them. If the lounge wasnt new i would have walked out. door and windows frames are all scratched and i know that its a cabin with a more rustic feel but theres a difference between rustic and run down. I personally dont think they should be rented in this state especially for $303 a night.

We spent 2 nights at Hunters Hideway and were very disappointed! We were expecting "rustic" but not old and run down. Dirty carpets, sticky floors, filthy oven...filled with old burnt residue, old furniture and not overly clean kitcken, fridge etc. One bedroom smelt like old pee. Either the cleaner or previous guests left the sliding doors open as the place was filled with mozzies. We were kept up for more than an hour during both nights trying to battle the mozzies after waking to several bites. And sadly the grounds were unkept. We realize its a bush property but some attention to area at the cottages and along drive would go a long way. This place has such potential if it had some upgrades, cleaning and tlc!!

Hello David and Linda, Thank you for bringing the issue to my attention. Since your stay in March with the corona virus isolation coming into affect after 100% cancellations and zero bookings there has been time to address many issues. The oven has been thoroughly cleaned, all carpets washed and cleaned the grounds have now been tidied. All walls and ceilings have been freshly painted. As the cottages are on many acres they were a dust bowl after unfortunately the Hunter region had been in an 18 month draught which broke in Feb/March which resulted in not grass but in an infestation of tall weeds. The grounds maintenance machines which had not been used for over 2 years have now been repaired and working with the grounds slashed and Kangaroos happily grazing again. Hopefully when the virus isolation is lifted we can potentially see visitors return to Hunter valley Wine Country. Regards Paul.

The surroundings are beautiful! We loved watching the kangaroos right outside our cabin! We were able to book a single night at short notice and the price was reasonable. Good location for a Hunter Valley trip.
The not so good... I woke up with bed bug bites all up my arms. There's a farm shed behind the Merlot cabin and people were working there throughout our stay so it's not really a "hideaway" and we felt uncomfortable - they can see right in to the cabin! The place wasn't very clean. Sticky floors, cockroach droppings in the kitchen drawers. I wouldn't stay there again.

Took my family as a last minute decision to stay in one of the cabins. Place was clean and comfortable particularly the beds. Facilities were adequate and place was warm. Great place to de-stress and do nothing though not to far away from civilization for those who want to play. Owner Paul was easy to deal with.
Would definitely stay again.

We booked the cottage at the last minute and we are very happy with our week-end break. It is located in very quite place and the kangaroos are jumping all around the cottage. At the same time, the cottage is located near all landmarks of Hunter Valley (no more than 20 minutes drive) so it is very handy. Great destination for a week-end holiday

Stayed here for a weekend in October, place was dirty, broken old chairs left outside our Semillion cabin. Barbecue has rusty and filthy. Fully equipped kitchen is dated and has no washing machine or dishwasher and not enough cutlery provided for 4 people in a cabin for 6. Bunk beds were too low. Bathroom was shabby and cold. When we complained to Paul he half heartily gave the barbecue a wipe and said washing machines were not part of a kitchen ?????? He offered no reduction in price and just slinked off with himself saying this is Australia and justified his prices because it's Hunter Valley. The worst place by far that we stayed in during our trip down under. Very bad value for the money, very remote also and has bats in the attic that keep you awake half the night. Find anywhere else to stay.

Accommodation needs for four adults are not as readily available as for a family of four (2 adults/2children).
We three sisters recently took our 86yo Mother on the little driving trip in rural NSW and as it was school holiday time minimum stay policies were effected in many regions. So choosing where we could stopover necessarily required a little more planning than just 'winging it' throughout the region.
Paul @ Hunter Hideaways is smart enough to price stays answering the customer's needs.
Chardonnay cottage suited our four adult needs and we were so happy with our little cabin in the Hunter Valley bush we stayed two!
The cabin/cottage is well equipped, beds are extremely comfortable, hot water plentiful and the gas fire place a cosy feature for the cold nights. The cabins also have airconditioning.
Great location for pootling about the various wineries/attractions/villages and delightful to return to the peaceful location for that glass or two of (insert your preference) at day's end!
