#1 of 5 hotels in Waitomo Caves
We are located in the Waikato, a 2 and a half hour drive south of Auckland and 2 hours across from Rotorua. We are a couple of minutes drive from the world famous Glowworm Caves in Waitomo. Our Motels are world unique, built in part from recycled and natural materials. They have in the past worked hard as a war plane, a navy patrol boat and a carriage from the steam train era. As such they have a slightly lingering aroma from their industrial past, much like any modern vehicle - their scent reflects the materials they are made of. Our Cave Holiday Motel built underground contain natural fibre curtains and some timbers - these too reflect the natural scent of their origins.

We visited this motel for one night in a 'Hobbit' room. We are so sad that this place has been left to run down so badly. The venue itself was damp and wet, with mould and moss growing on all the outside furniture, lawns not mowed. The reception person was very helpful, offering maps and information re dinner locations in the local town. Once we got our keys to our unit, we found our car park and my heart sank when I saw our door all covered in bird excrement. When we opened our room, the air was so thick and stuffy, with a damp mouldy smell. They had put heater on for us, which was nice however and much appreciated as it was 8 degrees outside. The curtains, made of sacking (I presume for the 'hobbit' effect), smelt really bad and didn't cover the windows properly. There were metre long cobwebs hanging from the wall decorations around the kitchen, and the wall decorations had layers of dust on them. The room had a big TV, however with lots of electrical wires haphazardly strewn about. We decided to pop on the electric blankets to warm up the bed but take care, the wires are all exposed and quite dangerous. Hubby decided to have a shower but alas, the bathroom. Firstly, it had a bad urine/sewerage odour. The toilet had a broken seat, and the management had put in a toilet paper 'restrictor' (only way I can describe it) so very hard to access the paper. We decided to call the shower a 'tap shower" - the water was a dribble and it was cold. Tried it again in the morning and still cold. The whole room felt 'icky', the fridge made a racket during the night so all in all, a bad experience. We have travelled extensively in NZ and the world so not being precious, but this place is not worth the money at all. Don't do it.

A very quirky motel - rooms are in either: Hobbit holes, a railway carriage, a ship, or in an old cargo plane. We spent one night in the ship (the Waitanic) and one in the cockpit of a Bristol Freighter (go figure!). And we had the best nights sleep in months! Basic and very quirky but plenty of hot water in the showers, tea/coffee making facilities, and very comfy beds. Plus lots of kiwi in the area so very cool hearing them at night.

Based on previous reviews and the motel’s website, we had low expectations that were unfortunately met. On the positive side - the kids loved the novelty of staying in the tail of a plane - so I’m glad we stayed for that alone, but wouldn’t go back now we’ve checked it off our list. The whole complex is extremely run down. The chemical smells inside the room were pretty unpleasant, despite the motel warning of this on their website I wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as it actually was. The doorway into the plane and through into the double bed is extremely low, and accidentally bumped our heads into steel on several occasions. Living space was tiny with a very small kitchenette - definitely could not cook in there easily and opted to go down the road for dinner instead. The bathroom floor was covered in water after showers. Whenever the family staying in the cockpit part of the plane moved around, the whole plane shook - and I’m sure vice versa. All in all - go for the novelty factor but keep expectations extremely low.

We booked the Hobbit Unit for a family of four and loved it! Very clean, great check in and such a unique experience. Huhu restaurants own the road was fabulous for dinner. Brought own cereal so self catering for breakfast before hitting the caves in the morning 💕

Our group of five enjoyed our one nights stay here. We were comfortable in the train unit and appreciated having the area around the unit just for us. We had a nice view down to a creek and fields and there was space for the kids to explore and play. The unit was clean and roomy enough (surprisingly). The only downside was that there was no shelter from the hot afternoon sun for the table and chairs outside. It was not a problem to drag the chairs to a shadier spot, though, and hopefully the owners will soon replace the umbrella that can provide some shade. In the morning this was a great place to sit and enjoy the views.
