It was my own fault, I booked in a hurry and didn't read any reviews. This place would be great for a boys weekend, but not for a couple. The picture of the room looked amazing (the bed) but that was as good as it got. This place is really old and not up to hotel standards. Old decor, the...

Thank you for taking the time to place a review on our hotel. We are sorry to hear that it fell below your expectations. We think there is something really special and grand about staying in a historic hotel. There are so few opportunities in New Zealand to experience travel from a bygone era! It is true the bathrooms are...

I won't even say that I stayed here, but I did check into this hotel in early August. It is a very old building, and upon checking in I felt uncomfortable, which I thought I could get over. After checking in I went on a tour of the caves, and upon my return I still remained uncomfortable or to put...

We appreciate the effort you have put into your review. We are sorry our hotel did not meet your expectations. The room you booked is our entry level room, smallest rooms at just $83.00 per night. We believe it is great value for money so close to the Caves. The hotel has varying room sizes/categories and your room size was...

We decided rather than visiting Hobbiton and Waitimo Caves in a combined one day trip from Auckland, we would stay over after visiting Hobbiton on the first day. We chose the hotel as the most affordable on Booking.com for our booking for two rooms. We chose a queen size double room and a king size double room both with en...

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your recent stay at our hotel. Nice to see that you took an interest in the history of our property - one of the oldest hotels in New Zealand in fact. Whilst some areas of the property are yet to have been completed under our refurbishment programme, we ensure that our rooms are...

one word to describe this hotel: creepy. not too sure about 'old world charm'. the rooms were not that clean either (heaps of hair stuck on the bed runner). this hotel needs a massive uplift, the wallpapers are peeling, the cupboards are peeling. the lace lining the bed head was also quite worn. bathrooms also need some uplift. front desk...

Totally disappointed by the deceiving images of this hotel on the Internet . Smelly rooms ,needs urgent restoration ...NOT RECOMMENDED Staff friendly and apologetic however does not compensate for shoddy rooms . Booked via an agent as 5*

A grand old building. Staff here are wonderful and helpful, nothing is too must trouble and they all go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. Rooms are warm and the linen is beautiful. The building is a little tired but the whole hotel is exceptionally clean.

We stayed for one night and chose this hotel solely for the experience of staying in such a wonderful, historic, old building. It did not disappoint - yes, the rooms are tired and in need of renovation but that seems to add to the charm. We stayed in room 14 overlooking the Waitomo Caves and were assured by three different...

What a grand old girl this hotel is. Squeaky floors and history all over the place. We loved our stay here and will come back again. Log fire and leather chesterfields are always a hit. The restaurant has a historic charm.

Fabulous review - thank you for recognising the hotel for what it is - not brand new, but a beautiful historic gem with loads of character. We love our open log fire too. See you again on a return visit!
