Rejoining life after you’ve lost a partner, your childhood sweetheart, due to death can feel overwhelming and scary. To no longer have your co-pilot in life walking beside you, offering up that unspoken support and confidence, is something only others in a similar situation can truly understand. I was recently asked to assist my daughter and her friend, who were tackling the Mantario Trail, to be their driver. Because of the uncertainty as to when they would arrive at the North Trailhead, I pulled up my big girl britches and decided to rent the quaint studio cabin #7 at the Big Whiteshell Lodge. I have NEVER done this in all of my 61 plus years of living! As I checked in and gently told my story to Gary, one of the beautiful owners of this Lodge, he immediately and without hesitation, gifted me with a massive upgrade at no extra charge, to cabin #3. Number three is a remarkable and cozy two-bedroom cabin right on the water. This cabin had a view my heart needed more than I knew. The tears flowed from the depths of my soul and as Gary came from behind the desk to give me a heartfelt hug, he whispered, “Have a wonderful time.” Gary’s gifts continued as he also waived the usual check-out time of 11:00 am and told me that I was welcome to stay as long as was necessary to meet-up with my hikers. I sat on that glorious balcony until Mother Nature shut off her lights. I enjoyed the smells and sounds coming from a neighbouring fire along with the sounds of the loons. I revelled in my courage, chanted over and over again the gratitude I was experiencing to have been blessed by Gary’s authenticity of loving human nature and kindness. I healed on many levels during that overnight stay. More than I knew I needed to. Bless your heart Gary for gifting me the opportunity to heal in ways I never even realized I needed to and assisting me with a beautiful ending to my courageous story. I will find my way back to Big Whiteshell Lodge one day, to your spot of heaven on earth. I appreciate you and thank you for being you.

Worth the drive, amazing scenery / wildlife all the way up to the camp. The owner is extremely accommodating for the season. (Winter before ice is fully frozen) I have stayed in many cabins over the years while we work on projects and by far BWL wins by leaps and bounds. Diesel is on site , gasoline is on site and the prices in the store for food and supplies are very fair. The cabins are perfect and roomy , the views of the lake are unbelievable. I am excited to come back for relax time in the very near future.

My hubby and I try to plan a yearly get away to decompress, relax and hike. The past few years we have chosen Big Whiteshell Lodge as our go to place. This year we were so happy to get our favourite cabin in the Whiteshell (#9) back after being under Reno for past few seasons due to flooding and high water. This cabin is built right over the water!
We were so sad to see it damaged during a bad spring but the new reno is a positive result! It’s been updated with new floors, cabinetry and ceiling. I didn’t mind the rustic vibe before but this makes the experience even more enjoyable! There’s a private firepit area and picnic table on some rocks nearby where you can hear loons and other wildlife. The dock for crowduck lake fishing lodge is nearby so be prepared to see happy boatloads of fisherman being ferried to and fro. Internet is limited in the cabin but you can get good wifi up at the lodge/store. The trailhead to north mantario is nearby so a good place to end or begin a trip like that. Other nice hiking trails in the area are meditation lake and big Whiteshell lake trails (both pretty short but some uphills on the Bwl trail), cabin lake (def a longer more challenging trail). We love how the lodge is centrally located and not far from pine point rapids (another fav). The owner Garry is an amazing down to earth guy and all the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the past under different owners and it’s incredible what the new owner has done to build this into a destination lodge. The store is well stocked with liquor and many groceries! This was a bonus. We needed cheese, eggs and there was also some meat and lots of dry goods et . There’s a restaurant, a lounge, a patio deck and live music in summer. Sadly we were too late in season for that. Anyway, really enjoyed our stay and plan to return next year!

Wonderful family experience. Gary and his crew were really helpful when we reserved, taking time to answer all our questions. The cabins were clean & the lodge store well stocked with food items. Our main hangout as a family was in the 3 bedroom chalet right on the lake. Although the bedrooms in the chalet are a bit cramped, the kitchen and deck had plenty of room for the 14 of us to meet and have meals together, and the view was splendid. (The bedrooms in the other 2 cabins we rented were much larger.) Canoe and kayaks are included in the rental price. We also rented the pontoon boat for a long lazy afternoon on the lake for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend the Big Whiteshell for family gatherings!

I stayed at Big Whiteshell Lodge for four nights from April 3-7, 2022 and enjoyed myself tremendously! It was a magical experience and to think I was only a two hour drive from Winnipeg!
Cabin #4 was on the shore of the lake and has a gorgeous view of the lake and the sunrise. It is well equipped with a gas fireplace, heated floorboards, a full kitchen, TV and great wi-fi. There’s a BBQ on the deck and a lovely jetted tub. There are two bedrooms and the beds are comfortable. The couches are also comfortable, which makes for a very pleasant stay.
The owner, Gary, was always there and you can phone or text him about anything. When he found out that I loved being around wildlife and photographing them, he would text me whoever the fox was at his door so that I would have the opportunity to get good close up shots! The foxes are definitely a great tourist attraction and I enjoyed being around them and looked forward to every interaction with them. There are also abundant wildlife at the lodge with all kinds of birds, including gray jays, which we don’t see in Winnipeg. I heard hawks often and saw eagles flying by. The owner and workers feed the birds so there is plenty of opportunity for photography. There are also squirrels and chipmunks.
The hike up the hill from behind the lodge takes you up to an incredible vista with a gorgeous view of the lake.
I will be back to stay for a week in the summer and plan to visit in fall. If you’re looking for a great place to get away from the city, definitely stay at Big Whiteshell Lodge. You will not be disappointed!

We have stayed at BWL for 3 years as an extended family, since the first year Gary and his family took over the Lodge. It has been delightful to watch how the staff have done such a great job developing and improving the resort! This year I was thrilled to find stellar upgrades to the cabin aesthetic. New flooring and paint has made a fabulous difference, and the new mattresses were a treat! We go with 3 young families and my parents (the grandparents), which makes this lodge a great fit for us as we all have our own space, yet we can gather for outdoor meals. This year we had the lakeshore cabin that enabled us to take over the rock outcrop - the kids like to scramble up and down the rocks into the water, fish, and search for wiggly creatures in the shallows. We enjoyed morning coffee and late night fires on the rock overlooking the lake. Our annual family highlight is usually the 'party-boat' (aka pontoon) we take out for the day to enjoy swimming, cliff jumping across the lake, fishing, etc. Unfortunately the weather this weekend wasn't as conducive to a lengthy trip. alas. Next year!! My favourite part: the complimentary kayaks/canoes we could take out on the water, the quiet! and the sounds of the loons over the lake. I also really enjoy being cut off from cell reception and wifi, with option to pop into the well stocked Lodge store to take a quick look at messages every now and then. Also, reading on the front deck that overlooks the water, hiking the rocky hillscape nearby. My kids like the sandy beach and swimming and the jacuzzi tub with jets! :-)

I recently spent an enchanting week at Big Whiteshell Lodge.
The cottage is incredibly cozy with a very comfortable bed, furniture, gas fireplace, spa tub and a gorgeous view of the lake.
The owner, Garry, is the most fantastic guy ever! He goes to get lengths to ensure that his guests are happy and satisfied. Two days after my arrival, he asked if I had seen loons. I said I had but they were too far offshore to see. So he arranged with his employee, Becky, to get her son, Cayden to take me out on a boat the next day!! And what a fantastic ride that was! I got to see and photograph a pair of loons, cormorants flying out and other birds. Cayden also taught me to fish! And we looked for turtles in the clear waters of the lake. The day I left, a loon showed up near the shore. That was a wonderful sendoff for me as I had come to see loons. Cayden told me about a wild pet wolf on Crow Duck Island. I mentioned it to Garry, asking how I could get on Crow Duck. “I’ll arrange it!” he said and sure enough, the next morning, we were headed there for an unforgettable and amazing experience!!!
The staff and Garry are like family to me. They’re always warm and friendly. I asked Becky where I could get nice sunset shots. She drove me to Green Lake where I enjoyed a spectacular sunset!! Where in the world would you find such awesome folks? They truly are the best and along with friendly foxes, unusual and beautiful insects (friendly dragonflies that land on you, Luna moths, Sphinx moths etc), friendly squirrels (red squirrels actually come to you!), very friendly chipmunks, turtles, loons and other wildlife … this is truly an enchanting place and one that I will look forward to visiting for years to come.

We spent a week out at the Big Whiteshell Lodge and stayed in cabin #1 overlooking the lake. The view from the deck is spectacular and it was fun watching all the people come and go from the beach and boat launch. Our 3 bedroom cabin was recently renovated and really comfortable with a very spacious living area and open kitchen. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we possibly could have needed. The bedrooms have new comfortable mattresses and fresh linens. The bathroom comes with a jetted tub and there are plenty of towels. The deck out front is very large and comes with a big table and chairs for 6 and there are Adirondack chairs that you can use on the deck as well or by the fire pit below. A propane BBQ and full size refrigerator are also included on the deck.
We spent each day fishing and caught many pickerel and pike!
Heather and Gary are the new owners and management team of the Lodge. They are very friendly and inviting and are totally committed to making everyone’s stay at Big Whiteshell Lodge an enjoyable one! They have a large, new and completely stocked store with food, clothing, snacks, fishing tackle, bait, boats, souvenirs, fuel and liquor.
It is amazing what Heather and Gary have done to this lodge in just over a year and many of the local cottagers and visitors have raved over the fresh new and pleasant atmosphere created by the new owners!
We believe that the Big Whiteshell Lodge is the best destination in the entire Whiteshell Provincial Park and are definitely coming back next year!

We were there from July 30- August 6 2023. When we walked into cabin #1, we were pleasantly surprised. It had lots of room, was tidy, the beds were set up great at least for us with 1 queen bedroom and 2 more bedroom with 2 twins in each. It worked out perfectly for our people. The owner and employees were so friendly and one of them brought a baby snake to the kids for them to see. The location was perfect close to the beach, the dock for fishing and the lodge. I have already booked for next year and I cannot wait

Just got back from a weekend of ice fishing. There are new owners who have been here for a year now. We got to meet the new owner, Gary, who is a real friendly guy who genuinely wants everyone who visits his place to have a great time. He has put a ton of work and money into fixing the resort up, including a complete remodelling of the store. The work is paying off, as the day place looks great. The cabins are clean and well maintained, they have satellite TV, should you want it. Our cabin also had a jacuzzi tub.
If you haven’t visited Big Whiteshell Lake, it’s a beautiful lake with all sorts of things to do, such as fishing, hiking, camping, swimming, etc. It’s one of the prettiest spots in the province in my opinion. It’s a great snowmobiling area too.
Gary is a great guy to talk to, he has lots of great plans for the place, including possibly bringing in entertainment, such as live music, for certain weekends in the summer. He also has boats for rent in the Summer, and premium fuel all year.
I will definitely be coming back, I’m already looking forward to it.
