Canopy Lodge is the place to go for a sublime birding experience in Panama. The location in steep, lush valley next to stream makes fir a jungle like feel with alot of birds to be seen! Our group came with Nature Ninja Tours and our guides Tiffany and Danilo (Canopy guide) were so incredible. we saw 223 bird species in 5 days, several of which are quite rare to see. Rooms are open air with screen opening high up on walls, which brings jungle and stream sounds, which I will miss! It included all meals prepared by Lodge and food was exceptional. Highly recommend!

Beautiful lodge in a delightful valley. This was built be the Canopy family and has a wonderful atmosphere. The bird guides are brilliant and not just for birds, the night walks produced some wonderful nocturnal mammal and amphibian sightings. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with views through the trees. Thoroughly recommend it.

Amazing grounds in forest with birds everywhere. Good food. Rooms with beautiful views. Staff professional, helpful and excellent guides to see the grounds and look for wildlife. They put out fruit and hummingbird feeds to watch local birds, squirrels, etc. Not really a place for kids. Creek filled pool in the forest for hot days.

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our package with the Canopy family. It is a luxurious lodge and the room was just beautiful. In the midst of beautiful gardens, lots of bird feeders with various birds visiting, well kept trails within the gardens to wander around on, a well built tree house and a fascinating stream that gurgles quietly at times and turns into a torrent of water with rocks crashing in it as they get displaced during heavy downpours...... it is all a magical experience. The rooms are clean, beautifully appointed and very comfortable. The communal seating areas are also very well appointed and comfortable. Our only negative here was that the food was great on some days and very average or uninteresting on some days, especially when the effort to provide a dessert on one day was simply sliced papaya. As a world class eco lodge with great guides and birding, superb rooms and a stunning setting, we expected the food to match this level. Yet we would go back again as the focus was not the food but the birds. The trip to the beach for waders and raptors was a well organised amazing day.

First off, we were on a birding mission and our top priority was to have good guides. We were not disappointed at all, all of the guides we had were outstanding. Most particularly Tino who was not only fabulous on birds but also butterflies. A nice combo as one of our party was really into butterflies. The lodge did a nice job of setting a variety of all day trips with picnics and half day trips with lunches at lodge. Fair amount of driving to specific birding hotspots and some nice, pretty easy, hikes. The birding was excellent on the beautiful grounds. Rooms were comfortable. Only reason not five dots is food, while good, was not special. The staff were all very welcoming and efficient. Airport transfers were spot on which is always a relief. All in all a very nice way to spend seven nights and would highly recommend.

The lodge has an idyllic location in the mountains surrounded by beautiful woods and gardens. The birding and wildlife viewing opportunities are excellent, the accommodation was extremely comfortable, and the staff is outstanding. Their health and safety protocols are excellent, and nothing about the current situation detracted in the least from the enjoyment of my visit. I would return any time.

If you love birds & nature, this is the place for you! The rooms are great, with lots of storage space and large balconies. Our room overlooked the spacious open dining and sitting area, which was a bit noisier than rooms further away. Our package (booked directly with Canopy Family) included 7 days of birding in the Tower & the Lodge, including transport from Panama City, between lodges, and back to the airport hotel. The guides were fantastic at both lodges.
All of the Lodge staff were helpful with any needs or questions. The food variety, freshness and presentation was wonderful. Different every day of our week's stay there.
We went during the dry season so weather was good, just a bit of rain in early January. Since the Lodge is at a higher elevation than Panama City, it was a bit cooler but still quite warm.
Since we booked directly with Canopy Family, our bird excursions were with other independents as they came & went. The larger tour groups had their own individual guides, which was great. Some times my husband & I were the only ones with the Canopy guide - other times up to about 8 total. We definitely enjoyed meeting others and had some alone time as well. Tino & Eliecer were our primary guides at the Lodge - both were very personable, excellent at spotting & hearing the wide variety of birds.

Just returned from a week-long visit and can't rave enough about this place. Facility and food were top-notch, but its greatest asset is its people. The care that they have for their guests is the best. Each guide was an expert in finding birds and whistling them in for a closer look. They were as enthusiastic as we were to see each species. Tino, Danilo Sr., and Danilo Jr became just like family to us. My travel companion unfortunately had a little mishap resulting in a broken arm. Guide Eliecer spent 7-8 hours with us locating an equipped hospital, and provided translation services. Carlos Bethancourt even phoned our hotel at the airport the morning of our departure to follow up. I will be back for sure!

Thank you to everyone at Canopy Lodge for a wonderful stay! The staff, meals, and accommodations were excellent. Our guides were outstanding! Their knowledge of local wildlife and ability to see, hear, and locate birds and mammals was truly amazing. The trip list for our 7-day stay was 245 bird species!
On one of the birding trips, we were heading back to the Lodge and made an unplanned stop at a small farm owned by Eric Rodriguez (Canopy apprentice guide) and his family. They have been improving habitat on the farm for birds, especially hummingbirds. It’s working! We visited “hummingbird hill.” Hummingbirds were everywhere! We saw 7 species including the green-crowned brilliant (our only observation for the trip). A wonderful location. We wish Eric and his father all the best and look forward to visiting the farm again!
We gained a better understanding and appreciation for Panama and its rich biological diversity. The photo of the Canopy Lodge site taken in the 1950s that hangs in the Lodge library illustrates that with vision, optimism, and perseverance, conservation efforts can succeed. We plan to return!

Absolutely EVERYTHING about Canopy Lodge was spectacular. From an easy check-in, great staff, and food. The daily well-organized birding outings were fantastic. The grounds were stunning. Our room was perfect for us with plenty of room and a nice veranda. We met other birders, made good friends and had a most wonderful time. We cannot say enough good things. The food was delicious! Tino and Danila were our primary birding guides and knew so much about everything. Tina made sure that I saw everything, even with my old eyes. All the staff made sure we were comfortable and happy. Absolutely the best! We cannot wait to return.

Hi Linda. November is part of our rainy season yes, but usually, we have clear and beautiful mornings and many birds. The trails you´ll visit depend on which Lodge you are visiting. At the Canopy Tower some of the places you´ll visit are gravel yes and the other trails don´t get that muddy. Same for the Canopy Lodge. At the Canopy Camp, the longest trails might get a little muddy, but we have rubber boots that our guests are welcome to use. If you have further questions please contact us!
Hi there. Soap is provided, as are towels. The lodge also provides sulphur you put over your shoes and socks to keep the chiggers away. It is very effective.
Have a great time. Canopy Lodge is beautiful and you see lots of animals and birds.
Whale season in Panama is from July to the very beginning of October. The Canopy Lodge is located up in the foothills, and while we do venture down to the coast once in a while, we do not offer specific whale-watching tours. There are, however, several companies based in Panama City that offer excellent whale-watching excursions during the season in which the whales are passing through Panama.
Meals are casual dress and you will have plenty of time to get freshened up after arriving from the tours. As mentioned, we enjoy a relaxed atmosphere at mealtimes in the open-air dining room on the veranda. Thank you for your question!
Yes! All tours operated out of the Canopy Lodge can be arranged upon arrival. Local attractions can be visited as well, some charge a small admission fee, which can be paid in cash directly at the attraction you wish to visit. Thank you for your question.
